This was my first digital SLR camera - I'd used film SLRs before and digital compacts but couldn't afford the price of a new SLR, then I saw the EOS 20D on eBay and managed to get it for around £200.

I very soon bought a zoom lens for it and have taken a few thousand photographs in the four years I've had it. I use it for motorsport photographs for my own enjoyment and for this I put the camera on a tripod and use a wireless remote. I've managed some very good photographs with this method.

I tend to carry it around with me, especially to family gatherings and as a testament to the camera (certainly not to the photographer), if I do turn up at one of these events without my camera, people are disappointed!

By todays standards, the 8 Megapixel sensor isn't state of the art and because I do tend to crop my pictures - often heavily, I'd like something a little more modern, but for a hobby camera, it's great and has for me, proven very reliable considering the abuse it's seen.

I love the viewfinder (I really can't use these screen only cameras), even at the higher ISO settings noise isn't all that apparent and the continuous mode is very useful.

If you're thinking of buying a digital compact and want a camera for taking something more than simple snapshots, have a look around for a second hand EOS 20D - it's a great cheap starter digital SLR and if you decide to put more effort (and money) into the hobby, any accessories will still be compatible provided you stick with the Canon series.

My EOS20D takes great pictures, though focusing wit a telephoto leans can be annoying.

My problems is repair after repair after repair.

Bought in March 2005 it had two repairs to the flash by the end of 2006.

Little used in 2008 due to cancer operations repaired again in 2010, flash unit replaced.

Now 2011 the camera will not switch on properly and another expensive repair would bring the overall cost up to the cost of anew body.

Canon used to have a good reliability record, but not now.

I have owned this camera for more than seven years and I purchased it second-hand and less than a year old, from a must-have-the-latest 'enthusiast'. For a keen amateur photographer like me it does everything I need and more. It's an all-round performer from high action sport to portraits. The only gripe I have is the amount of dirt the sensor picks up and it's a pain in the rectum to clean! An obvious statement but true: as long as you use good quality lens's (But they don't have to be expensive Canon lens's) you'll get fantastic quality images. My Canon 20D will be a companion for life. I have been looking to buy another 20D body as a second camera but they are still too expensive as they keep their value, which say's everything.

That is not the best lens, but I don ' t see it being worse than my kit lens, and the zoom range is WONDERFUL! my next lens will be the 50mm 1.This is a tough decision. I have the Xsi (Canon 450D). I immediately wanted more zoom range. You will miss the range you powershot has compared to the kit lens. Before my daughter ' s graduation, I had a little windfall profit, and I found a 18-200 OS Quantaray on craigslist. That is not the best lens, but I don ' t see it being worse than my kit lens, and the zoom range is WONDERFUL! my next lens will be the 50mm 1.8. I bought my camera the way they suggested because I was going on a rare trip to the coast.

I will say, that moving up from a smaller digital camera, many times miss the pocketability. Get use to carrying around more stuff. I have missed shots while digging out the DSLR out of the bag.

If you are looking for a professional digital camera without the professional price, then the Canon EOS 20D Digital SLR camera is hard to overlook.

Following my first comments on the Canon EOS 20D digital SLR camera; after getting the repairs done I retested in the field (bird photography). The results show that this is a good camera, but it is still prone to focusing inaccuracies, however steadily the camera is held (big tripod, bean bag on ground, etc). Using a long lens is the hardest; it's all over the place compared with my film camera with a similar lens. All other results are excellent, showing what a good all purpose camera it can be. I hope in the new 30D Canon have resolved the focusing accuracy, as this would make it possibly one of the best mid-price digital cameras on the market!

I bought the Canon EOS 20D digital SLR camera to replace a Nikon zoom, and I was surprised when I turned the camera on. I could start taking pictures as soon as I flipped the on switch. The burst speed is super fast. Great ISO range with little noticeable noise at 800. A great camera for the photographer hobbyist.

If you're looking for a digital camera that is sure to help you keep up with--and surpass--the Joneses, Canon will deliver with its EOS 20D. This 8.2-megapixel digital camera has an amazing list of features that few other models can match.

Of course, most consumer-level photographers will never need the 3520x2344 maximum resolution (yielding prints approximately 16x24 inches in size) that the EOS 20D's 8.2-megapixel image sensor can deliver. However, the extremely high pixel count has other benefits, such as the ability to crop a large photo and still have a sharp, high-resolution photo.

Even if you aren't planning on making 2-foot-tall prints, nearly any photographer can appreciate the EOS 20D's amazingly fast response times. Trust me - you'll never miss an action photo of the kids while waiting for this camera to power up. The EOS 20D is ready to shoot in about one-fifth of a second. And Canon has measured its shutter lag time at 65 milliseconds when pre-focused. (Needless to say, I'll take Canon's word on it; my stopwatch only measures in thousandths of a second.) When using auto-focus, the EOS 20D remains fast at less than one-half second.

The biggest downside to the EOS 20D is its size. If you love the wallet-sized digital cameras that are common today, this model probably won't appeal to you. It's similar in size and shape to a traditional 35mm film camera. However, the camera's size has one advantage for more experienced photographers: It can accept add-on lenses and external flashes, giving it more flexibility than most digital cameras offer.

The EOS 20D excels in low-light conditions, giving it a significant edge over most digital cameras. Not surprisingly, the EOS 20D offers a large number of manual settings, giving the photographer complete control over the shot. Its automatic settings can give beginning photographers success, too.

The EOS 20D's continuous-shot mode is impressive. You can shoot up to five photos per second and up to 23 photos in succession in burst mode.

Obviously, all this power comes with a powerful price tag. But let's be honest: Can you put a price on the ability to keep up with the Joneses?

I am generally pleased with the Canon EOS 20D digital camera, but have not got the results I expected when using manual and creative modes, despite computer processing.

The 17-55mm lens it came with is okay, but by no means top quality. You need to buy more lenses if you are serious about this camera.

I am not impressed with the rubber cover for the USB and video links, as I think this could perish in time. The biggest problem however, seems to be dust on the sensor. I was disappointed to find loads of photo's taken in Sicily spoilt by blotches. I was reasonably successful in doctoring them on Adobe, but it was a pain. In spite of following the cleaning instructions, the problem has persisted, and it has gone back to Canon for a proper look and clean. I now gather that this is an issue with this camera. Not good if you need to change lenses regularly while using the camera in different situations, only to find that the DIY cleaning process is not effective. I wouldn't say this should necessarily put you off an otherwise excellent camera, but beware.
