Great In Almost Every Respect (music, Av, Mp3 Etc.
Great in almost every respect (music, AV, MP3 etc.) BUT not reliable.
A few times each DVD it freezes momentarily, as if it were changing layer. However, rewind and replay the section and the glitch is gone - except when it is actually a layer change of course.
Could be because mine is multi-region. It's going back to the shop anyway. A friend also had a similar problem and all his replacement units were afflicted, so I'll change for a different model.
Guys before you change contact Yamaha. There is a firmware upgrade available for this unit FOC and it appears to have resolved the issue on my player.
Hi All
I completely agree, I've changed out my unit three times and I have the same intermittent data loss problem
It's a shame Yamaha produce such awesome equipment and this unit is a plain let down

The Yamaha Dvd-s520 Dvd Player Has Excellent Video
The Yamaha DVD-S520 DVD player has excellent Video and Audio qualities. I am running mine through a Yamaha RX-V1200 amp and Definitive Technology Speakers (ProMonitor 100s, PC2 Center and ProSub 100) with a 36" Sony TV (not HD). Picture quality and CD sound reproduction are equally amazing. The DVD-S520 plays "burned" CDs effortlessly. They advertise MP3 playback, but I have not tested this yet.
The only drawbacks are:
1.The DVD reaction/reading time is a little slow.
2.The DVD apparently does not have discrete On/Off IR codes. If you use a programmable remote, such as the Phillips Pronto, you will have to program around this fact.
I,m also having freeze problems with my 520 perchased in nov 02. I will be returning it hopefully for upgrade (firmwire whatever that is ?)
