Pros: I should have owned this car when i was 18, great fun to drive and this comes from a guy with a 6.3 chevy V8! Not bad on the old petrol, can do 40-42mpg driving it steadily, about 28-29mpg thrashing it around with a bit of motorway driving. Starts on the key every time, holds its own against most modern cars on the road, sounds great with the K&N induction on it.
Cons: When i first got the car i changed the plugs and leads, gave it a oil/filter change and it was fine. Got a missfire so tracked it down to the coil (still the original) and rotor arm/distributor. About a month ago the battery kept discharging itself, changed the battery, wasn't that, tracked it down to the alternator charging circuit. A total pain to do involving dropping the engine down, removing wheels etc, not the easiest car to work on!
Then just to top it off yesterday the headgasket went on the engine, luckily had a friend with a low mileage spare engine with 55k on the clock so that'll be going in this weekend.
Overall: Very easy to tune, just drop in the 1.6/1.8 and change a couple of wires on the MPi model and you've got a rocketship of a car for very little money. Love the car to bits, once you've sorted out the little niggles they're actually quite reliable but unfortunately getting a bit long in the tooth now so expect problems.

Absolute ripper, canes loads of idiots thinking they'll do it over. "Wrong!" the Metro GTi kicks ass from 1st to 4th - 5th just goes. Great for tuning and rippin it about -1.416 high lift cams, full ashley comp pipe. Lowered fat front tyres - all painted up.

I have a metro gti M reg last of them :) I've fitted a mgf 1.8 vvc running at about 165BHP
All I can say is WOOOO so powerful and shocks so many cars ( HONDA TYPE R and THE SEAT CUPRA R RS TURBO'S and EVEN MY M8'S BMW M3 ) the metro is starting to come to life once again as becoming retro just like the mk1 escorts.
BIG SMILES for the little pocket rocket :)

I payed £500 for my Metro, it was a 1.1c. I changed the engine for a 1.6 16 valver out of a 25. 145 bhp with vhpd throttle body conversion, with a jan speed inlet manifold, and kent high lift cams. sits quite nicely at 145mph with the cableshift pg1 gear box out of the mgtf. The handling is feeble as standard, but with Volkswagen Polo rear shocks, and MGTF front coil-overs, with the standard gti anti roll bars, it goes round corners like its on rails! The only thing to let it down is the rust, you will nvr beat it, as hard as you try it just keeps coming back! in summary the Metro is a very unique car, there has to be an eliment of passion to own and modify 1.

Loved owning the Rover Metro GTi 16V K Series, loved the performance that you could get out of such a small engine, bags of power in reserve, when modified you can get an extra 50-70 bhp (if done properly), handling is brilliant compared to the standard metro.
