We Bought Our Mercedes Based On Their Reputation A

We bought our Mercedes based on their reputation as bomb-proof reliable cars. What a JOKE that turned out to be.

Our 8 year old E-Class has developed RUST under every wheelarch, and around the front headlamp cluster. Mercedes at first tried to get out of doing our car under warranty. When they finally approved it, it was gone for - 8 weeks with no courtesy car.

- They did not have a tow facility, and put over 500 miles on the clock.

- We received the car back with the right wing not fitted properly - they took it back, and put ANOTHER 500 miles on the car.

- They refitted the wing, but left a scratch all over the bonnet.

After that we gave up on the Mercedes bodywork. However it gets worse...

- While the car was in their "care", the air conditioning failed. It cost us £500 to put right, with no offer from Mercedes.

- Six weeks later the water pump failed - another £500 to put right, with no offer from Mercedes.

So we now have an E-Class Mercedes that no one wants to drive because of the reliability issues. We can't even look at the bodywork because of the scratch marks (put there by Mercedes UK bodyshop!)

We contacted Mercedes UK, but they basically told us to get lost.

Incidentally the rust problem doesn't seem to be isolated to the E-Class - just been looking at an 3 year old S-Class at Mercedes in Truro with rusty wheel arches.

We have an 8 year old Fiat and it doesn't have a spot of rust on it...

My 8 year old E class also has a LOT of wheel arch rust. Mercedes say it is out of warranty so tough. Elsewise it does what you expect of a Merc.

Hi darrenc,

Thanks for the comment!

My point was that the problems occured during the time and shortly after Mercedes put 1000 miles on the car taking it backwards and forward from the bodyshop. I agree that cars need repairs through their life, but Mercedes' refusal to even meet us part way is disappointing.

The car has been devalued with the 1000 extra miles on the clock, and to bring it back broken after poor bodyshop warranty repairs adds insult to injury. The scratch marks put there by the bodyshop that are still on the bonnet were just the icing on the cake...

Its also worth remembering that this car cost around £45000 when it was new - you simply don't expect it to go rusty.

I think balance is important, and reason. You have to accept that an eight year old car of whatever brand will have deteriorated from new and have some reliability issues. in my opinion it is unreasonable to expect the manufacturer to pay for unrelated repairs following bodywork rectification.

Rycroft, The North Of England Dealership Gang Cann

Rycroft, the North of England dealership gang cannot be trusted to do ANYTHING properly! Steer clear of this gaggle of incompetent fools! Dont think I am exagerating! They really are rubbish! I recently had to sell my Smart Car (Merecedes) due to the absolutely abysmal support offered or not as the case may be! BE WARNED...They have 'dealerships'in Stockton & Newcastle Upon Tyne.
