The Nikon F55, Is A Very Lightweight, Easy To Use
The Nikon F55, is a very lightweight, easy to use and inexpensive film camera - I bought one on when I didn't have enough money to buy the Canon equivalent, and haven't looked back since. It doesn't have all the features from a more high end pro Nikon, however, the image quality will stand up with the best of them! A nice feature included is film is spooled in the camera and exposed film rewinds back in the can after shooting,so if the camera is dropped or security guards open the back all photo's are protected. If you like to stick with film this camera has never left me disappointed.
The only downside with the camera is it is a bit plasticky and I never liked the silver colour.

If You Want A Fab 35mm For A Reasonable Price, The
If you want a fab 35mm for a reasonable price, then the Nikon F55 is a contender. It backs up my Nikon D40 with surprisingly similar quality and results only on film. So there, Sure the pros know F5's and F6's and they know that ordinary lad and lass shutterbugs don't start there. They start out at the beginning with an N5 or comparable and work their way up.
The N55 is a great start into 35mm film and if it gets stolen, bounced off the mountain, tossed in the Rio Grande or any other similar atrocity you might commit with your F6, your not out thousands and thousands. I doubt these elitetist critics really think or care about the average Joe or Jane startup shutterbugs who might dream about having their own Nikon one day.
I got my first Nikon when I was 60. It was an N55 and it performs flawlessly. Excellent quality, rivalling any digital Nikon in my hands. I have been a photographer since age 12.
This is my first Nikon but not the last.
I agree with this review because... I have the same model and its great for the price.

The Nikon F55 Was My First Slr Camera And Essentia
The Nikon F55 was my first SLR camera and essentially what got me into photography. I am now a professional photographer and have moved on to, shall we say, more wallet punching equipment. It is basic and cheap but provides you with an entry into the world of SLR photography. With the digital world taking over most people would be put off by the fact that it still requires film which needs to be purchased and developed. In my opinion, to get a good idea of what photography is all about you have to start with the basics and this includes film. This is a fantastic camera for those whom want to set up their own home B&W dark room and develop their own photos. This can be done so cheaply these days and it provides so much satisfaction in developing your own snaps. Using film gives you a good idea of how light works which gives you valuable skills for when you move into the digital and professional world. Don't let yourself think that professionals only use digital cameras. This is far from true. Although there are now some pro's who swear by digital, most still like a mix of both film and digital. You can experiment with mixing different styles and techniques between them both. This camera allows you to do this and gives you all the basic functions you will require from a starter SLR including full manual modes and a full auto mode.
I highly recommend this camera for anyone looking to start out in the camera industry or just some one looking for a cheap camera for unusual/different shots.

This Camera Is A Baby Nikon, Usually Sold With A S
This camera is a baby Nikon, usually sold with a silver "G" series lens. The older Nikon "EM" is pretty close to its style.
It doesn't have predictive focusing or a fastish motor drive. It is built to a price to compete with the low price 4 series minoltas, mz 60 pentax's and 3000 and 3000V Canons.
It's made for light to medium usage usually sold with 28-80 and a 75-240 zoom both "G" series lenses.
The lens mount is plastic and so will not like the heavier pro lens, but is great for a wide or super wide angle. I use mine with a 17mm as a back up to an f80 with a 70-210 zoom.
It can take AI and AIS lenses but will not meter with them.
If you have brought a nice sb 24, 25, 26 ,27, or sb 28 you can only use it on "A" as there is no TTL flash. Which makes me think it was built to a price.
Overall it's a good camera, exposures spot on and the auto-focusing is not as slow as say the Minoltas in this price range.
It has all the modes you need to take excellent photos. A good clear display and the viewfinder are not too dim in low light.
I brought mine with a 28-80 "G" series lens as a back-up for $US 150 so I cannot complain too much.
I found this review helpful because...It provided me with some basic proportional information relative to the other Nikons I own. More detail would be useful; detail relative to shortcomings, strengths, technical capabilities, comparisons to other Nikons specifically F50 and F65.
