I Got 50-70% Improvement Over My Old P4 3.2extreme

I got 50-70% improvement over my old P4 3.2extreme edition by going to this board + e6700. Am running it with dual channel 2 gigs + x1950xt AGP (yes it fits fine even with the TEC cooler but you are left with only 1 PCI slot available) + X-Fi Xtreme Gamer sound card.

System runs 100% stable. No overclocking but all that means is you are forced to live with a stable system that still beats the pants off my previous overclocked P4 ee.

In order to run the FSB at 266 (1066) the BIOS applies a 3:2 memory divider meaning your DDR400 memory does not run at full speed. This is a reasonable compromise (IMHO) and probably contributes to the solid stability I've had from this ASUS P5PE-VM Motherboard.

I have nothing bad to say about this board - it will extend the life of your old hardware and then allow you to get a more powerful board/memory/graphics card when you are ready to extract the full power of your Core 2 Duo. In my opinion, the E6700 (and E6600) is the sweet spot CPU to get for this board, in terms of price and potential overclockability in the future should you upgrade again and keep the cpu.
