The A1000 Is A Superb Phone. It Is One Of The Best
The A1000 is a superb phone. It is one of the best phones out there. I originally got an A920 phone when I joined 3 about 5 years ago. The A920 was severely crippled by 3. The features on the A920 were ahead of there time, unfortunately 3 disabled them all as they were concerned that people could easily abuse all this extra power (despite the previous A835 having most of the things except a touch screen as the A920). Then a few months later the A925 was released by 3, this was at the time when all the other phone companies had already released most of the technology in the A920 without any problems, so 3 uncrippled the phone (and offered free firmware upgrades to A920 owners, the upgrade was quite hard to get though, 3 told me to take mine to Carphone Warehouse and they'd do it, Carphone Warehouse didn't have a clue what I was on about, so in the end I gave up and upgraded the phone to the A1000). The A1000 was by far even more technologically advanced than either the A920 or the A925. It had all the A920 disabled facilities enabled (Bluetooth, GPS, AGPS, Symbian unlocked so programs could be installed, Infra-Red, etc) and more (PDF reader, Microsoft Office document reader). The other really good thing about the A1000 was it's size, it was even smaller and more stylish than the A920/A925. The A920/925's both resembled the old satellite phones and looked like you were carrying a brick. One advantage to this was that if it went missing you'd know straight away that you'd lost it, but the A1000 was severly trimmed down, not much bigger than a Nokia NK402.
One really good thing with the A1000 is the touch screen. This to me is a superb idea and it really surprises me that not many other manufacturers have caught on with this, instead they've started hiding the keypad under a sliding mechanism or in a clamshell and not providing the user with any type of keyboard (instead leaving them to keep pressing numbers to get various letters).
The good thing with the touch screen is that the screen can change to what the users doing. So when watching a video the entire front face of the phone can be used to watch the video with no keys taking up part of that vital space. Then when texting the screen can change to be a full keyboard (or even handwriting recognition - although this wasn't as easy to use as you could only put in two letters at a time, it was a bit more easier once you got used to it). And then when making a phone call the screen changes again to a full screen number-pad for entering the numbers, this is really good for anyone who either has bigger thumbs for some of these smaller keypads as the digits are quite big taking up the entire screen of the phone and it's great that Motorola have also thought about people with visual problems who might have problems seeing the smaller numbers used on some of the modern handsets as the numbers are quite large.
Overall this is a very good phone and even though it's a few years old now is still ahead of it's time with it's touchscreen navigation. At the moment Motorola are working on a new phone to overtake this one called the A1200 which now has been given a 4 letter word - The Moto MING. The only bad point with the MING compared to the A1000 is the cover over the touchscreen, whilst this does protect it from being touched whilst in pockets (there is a screen lock on the A1000 anyway) it just seems to make it more fiddly to use, like the clamshell phones and also adds to the size of the phone. Also the 4 letter acronym that Moto has chosen for this phone may reduce it's demand in the UK as MING or MING-er is quite often used to describe someone who is doing something disgusting - but then again no-one Wii'd on Nintendo's bonfire with their strangely named games console so who knows what will happen to the Moto MING, will the next generation all be MING-er's?

The Motorola A1000 mobile phone is the best I have ever owned, and I know that because I change phones a lot. This phone amazed me with its superb sound, and amazing screen and camera; not to mention video calls and all the 3G stuff.
An all round superb phone! 100% recommended!

The A1000 Is, Without A Shadow Of A Doubt, A Very
The A1000 is, without a shadow of a doubt, a very nice mobile phone. Bristling with more features than the average hi-end PDA and coming in slightly smaller in size the A1000 is the perfect gadget-fanatics companion for all situations.
- Chatting -
Two cameras mean you can have a face-to-face video conversation or show each other around at the touch of a button. The loud, clear speakers mean hearing each other is not a problem when video-conversing. And your conversations can be recorded so you can watch them back later!
- On the Road -
Somehow, Motorola managed to squeeze a fairly good GPS system into the A1000 which makes use of network services to help compute it's position from GPS co-ordinates. A simple mapping program will track your bus route home with a fair degree of accuracy, although getting a fix is tricky and it's prone to wondering off course when you're not moving.
- The Music -
A diverse variety of music is available straight from 3 mobiles services in the form of music videos, mp3s and ring melodies. Forget Crazy Frog- you can download your favourite songs and listen to them instead. The loud, clear speakers mean the A1000 has no trouble providing musical entertainment to a few gathered friends, place it on a coffee table or kitchen sideboard and the resulting amplification is rather satisfying!
- The Video -
As mentioned above, music videos are available for download from 3's services. They look fairly good on the screen which is crisp and clear but a little on the small side for anyone used to a PDA. Additionally live video feeds are available from the Big Brother house at time of writing, alongside plenty of comedic entertainment, video reviews and a whole plethora of other content.
- The Games -
The A1000 is a pretty capable gaming machine in most respects, with plenty of games available including some multiplayer pay-per-play exclusives from 3. The thumbstick, however, has been found wanting and requires a little bit of practise to get used to the trick - they showed us at the press conference - is to use the end of your thumbnail to manipulate it.
- The Highlights -
The A1000 is probably the easiest phone to lock and unlock that I have had the pleasure to use. With the flick of a switch on the side the screen and buttons can be locked with no silly button combinations necessary to unlock it again.
There is a huge amount of software available, enough to make the A1000 capable of competing with low-end PDAs. The A1000 shows that phones evolving into PDAs fare better than PDAs trying to incorporate phones (handspring, anyone?)
- The Downers -
Put the stylus in the silo, dock it in the cradle for charge/sync and then try to get the stylus out again- this is a fairly fundamental design floor and a nuisance in a phone that must be charged on a daily basis.
On the subject of charging, the battery life is absolutely dire- with a bigger screen and a faster processor my PDA lasts infinitely longer. For the A1000 to play the important role of a PDA it needs to be there when you need it, a PDA with a flat battery is not useful as anything bar a paperweight.
Like Nokia and their original N-Gage, Motorola opted to put the memory card slot underneath the phone battery making the hot swapping us gadgeteers are used to completely impossible. I, for one, like to take the SD card from my camera and preview photos on my larger PDA screen.
Overall the A1000 has more ups than downs, is a fantastic phone, and a great buy. The major downside is the cost of 3G services- but if you are going to use a 3G phone anyway, make it this one!

I Have Owned My Motorola A1000 For Over 1 Month No
I have owned my Motorola A1000 for over 1 month now, and was really, really pleased with it, I thought it was the coolest gadget I have ever owned. Until one day, it was acting slow, then it turned off. When it turned back on again, I had no numbers, no photos, no videos, no games. Really annoyed, I use this phone for work and pleasure, I have lost some really good videos of friends and some games that were pretty expensive, not to mention my work contacts. Three were pretty good in saying I can replace my handset no problems, but the shop says that the phone I have is the best that three offer! Still in the process of sorting this out, beware if you have this phone! back up on a daily basis!!
