It is complicated to get all the right settings. To get the most out of the Sony DVD Recorder RDR-HX510 DVD recorder you will have to study the manual very carefully, but it will be worth it in the end.
Recording even EP (extended play) is excellent.

Don't Forget That The Sony Rdr Hx510 Dvd Recorder
Don't forget that the Sony RDR HX510 DVD recorder is an analogue tuner, so if you have a set top box this thing is not for you. But if you own a traditional TV on a cable system you won't be disappointed.
It is very easy to use, and the hard drive is silent.
The quality of sound is much better than the rivals.
Unfortunately you can't be creative enough with backgrounds and other stuff because there is no choice.
It is reliable and fast for the copying from HDD to DVD, but if you want to use it in the other direction this machine is very slow, as it does it only at 1x speed.

The Sony Dvd Recorder Rdr-hx510 Is Unable To Recei
The Sony DVD Recorder RDR-HX510 is unable to receive 5.1 Surround Sound Inputs
Not 1080i capable only 480i
Produces Simulated Surround Sound w/ Progressive Scan... nice but
* Point: If you think you can record HD w/5.1 to your TiVo - DVR - or straight into the DVD-R and get the same or similar quality - forget about it
Better wait another year.
Sony do not say that the recorder can receive 5.1 digital or do they say it records HD...SO...my question is..why buy the product and then run it down by complaining what it cannot do.

After A Few Frustrating Hours When Setting The Son
After a few frustrating hours when setting the Sony RDR HX510 DVD recorder up (due to my own slowness at getting my head around how the various bits of equipment worked together), I am extremely happy with this DVD recorder. It is easy to operate and creates excellent quality recordings. The only function I haven't yet succeeded with is the Synchronised Recording - I can get my freeview box to turn on with the timer function, but the DVD recorder doesn't then kick in. Perhaps the kind people who advised me with my set-up problems could oblige again!

I Wonder If Anyone Can Help Me, As Some Seem To Ha
I wonder if anyone can help me, as some seem to have a bit of knowledge here. My grandparents recently bought the Sony RDR HX510 DVD recorder, and they have a Sky+ box too. They were told that they would be able to record from the Sky+ box onto the DVD HDD and burn to DVD, yet nobody has been able to do so yet. They have since contacted a Sony service centre shop who are trying to help, but they haven't got back to them with any information as yet, as Sony themselves said that it wasn't their problem!
Does anyone have any ideas?
Not sure if this is too late for your enquiry.....BUT.....select the program you want to record on your Sky box, then make sure you have the DVD set on the blue light(HDD) and press record. After recording press stop and then insert a blank DVD into the slot.If the blank is new it will automatically format itself first. After it has formated press Title list and curser down to 'Dubbing' then simply press 'Start'. If you want to play the recording in another DVD player you must finalise it after. Hope this helps you.

I find the Sony DVD Recorder RDR-HX510 very easy to use. Editing of recordings is simple, as is dubbing from HDD to DVD or vice-versa.
The synchro recording feature is great if you want to record from a set top box.
