Great Staff, Great Venue - Food Just Wasn't Quite Up To It
We went along to The Victoria in East Sheen for lunch - it's a great gastro pub and the staff were great.
The menu was OK (not amazing, but OK) - I found a couple of things I wanted. The starter was quite nice, although a little on the small size, but that's OK as it was a starter - and I had ordered steak for main course so I wasn't too concerned.
So far, so good - the pint of bitter was also good.
However, when the steak came out I was really disappointed. I know its South West London prices, but for £18 I did expect a half decent steak.
The piece of meat I received was very small, very chewy and fatty and generally quite unpleasant. I picked my way through it, cutting off plenty of gristle and inedible bits and only really got a few mouthfuls for my money.
It came with chips - about 7 in total (albeit they were large) and no veg - so all in all it was a starter sized piece of poor quality meat for £18 - really disappointing
My wife was fairly underwhelmed by her meal too
It certainly wasn't dreadful, but just felt like the quality vs the price were out of synch with each other (that said, if I'd paid a tenner for the steak I'd still have been disappointed with it as it was quite unpleasant)
I might try it again as the venue and staff were great. Service was a bit on the slow side though - and there were only a couple of tables in, so that would concern me for when they're busy.
An 'almost there' but not quite .... shame.
