Worst Ever See
have never seen even a high school musical that was this bad , even a middle school musical this bad ! Scenery pitiful , sound, direction, voices horrible ! Even probably the most important part the dancers were horrid and there definitely were enough , what is there to say lame lame lame ! Only good part of the whole show was the last scene which was actually uplifting , which are what is needed because the rest of it was so horrid , sorry I wasted my money !
PS what was the Martin Luther King thing ? I'm all for Martin Luther King but in the middle of this play, what was that about ! Lame lame lame !

What's With The Extra Scenes?
I enjoyed the dancing and the costumes and how similar it was to the original movie. However, the extra scene with the MLK references and the freedom marches and all of that REALLY threw it off for me. It took me completely out of the moment and just made me confused wondering if I had forgotten this huge chunk of the movie. It just didn't fit. It feels like some kind of political message was being shoved down by throat, and while I like a political point as much as the next person, this wasn't the time or place. It was a distraction more than anything.
And some of the acting was corny and unbelievable. The young lady who sang most of the songs was AMAZING.

Very Disappointed
We was extremely disappointed with this sad depiction of the original movie! It was very lame and the digital field and water scenes were laughable, but not in a good way! The stage settings were almost non-existent and unmemorable! The only good thing about being there was seeing the beautiful Fox Theatre again! Can't say anything good about this Play! We left at intermission and felt that buying those tickets was a waste of good money!

Dirty Dancing
If you liked the film you will like the play. Great live dancing by everyone. More good songs. I left wanting to dance like they did but alas I never could:-)

Blah, Disjointed, Rushed, Dragged, Not Funny,
I rarely go to plays/musicals, but when I do, I always enjoy them. This time, to my dismay, while it had its moments, it is was not worth the price and nothing really worth going to.
I thought the dancing was great and the acting was pretty good. No clue why they digressed into Freedom Marches of the South, MLK, and all that stuff (which was not in the movie). It was like they just threw that in here after-the-fact and all it did was add the W T F was that all about moments. These W T F moments were plenty and did not help with the flow and continuity of anything - anything but actually.
Kudos to the main actors as I think is more of a writer/director issue.
I don't recommend it unless you have money to burn and are completely bored.

Not As Entertaining As The Movie
I agree with most of the other reviews, too many unnecessary political
remarks and foul language. The set looked incomplete. The acting was
sub-par. The music was great, but expected more from a "musical",
especially from the 60's,70's and 80's era.

When Did They Rewrite It?
Just finished seeing Dirty Dancing the Musical in Indy. "When did they re-write the story?" Saw it several years ago in Chicago and it stayed pretty true to the original movie and was pretty good.
This version added a whole section on the Civil Rights movement, several unnecessary scenes with Penny and Doctor/Mrs. Houseman and a scene with the staff thinking about jumping in the pool at Kellerman's but Johnny stops them, I thought it was that they re-wrote the "Fight Harder" scene but that took place a little later. None of these extra scenes added to the story, they just made the story stall.
They restaged the show from when I had seen it before. Now it has all this video which worked in some settings but was totally cheesy in other settings was disappointing/distracting. And the scene in the car with Baby changing after the number at the Shelldrake very lame.
Dancing was good but not great and there didn't seem to be any chemistry between the actors playing Johnny and Baby.

Sad What Was Done In Live Theater Version
A few positives were sister Lisa. She was better than movie version. Baby and Penny pretty good. Soloist for "in the still of the night" good. But added civil rights scenes given more emphasis than actual story from movie. Totally unnecessary. Didn't go to see musical version of Selma. Mom told about Penny's abortion!? Couldn't come up with a car? Really! The car scene drew laughter from audience. Rushed through scene after scene due to unnecessary added content. Dad came off as mean. Johnny not reminiscent of original. Not tpugh and strong but also sensitive. Came off flat and unmemorable. Swayze co wrote and sang #1 hit song "She's Like the Wind" back in the day and just used as background music during scenes...so sad. But just had to devote so much time to added political issues that were given a few lines in the movie.

Inconsistent
Baby, Penny and fee others were great. Johnny was absolutely awful. Could have put a high schooler in his place. Baby's dad was almost as bad. Blew the biggest line in the play. Set was boring snd scenes felt disjointed. The 2 soloists are very very good.
Added extra political bs that was completely wasteful.

Great Adaptation Of Movie!
I saw Dirty Dancing in Providence with 5 friends and we all LOVED the show! Everyone in the audience seemed to really enjoy it. Don't know what others expected, but I felt it was a great adaptation of the movie, which I have watched ?about 50 times! The cast was given a huge standing ovation at the end. We were upset before seeing the show because of the bad reviews, but thought it was great!
