There is something uniquely attractive about a good back street pub, even more so as they become an endangered species. This little gem of a boozer has all the best qualities of such hostelries, with a few special touches of its own on top.

A Joule’s pub since 2016 The Beehive has been refurbished to the high standard you’d expect without sacrificing its original character. Although small the pub offers a decent range of beers, ciders and lagers, all of which are well kept. It also plays host to a quiz night, live music and even regular appearances by the Penkhull Ukulele Band.

All this is very much par for the community pub course, what sets the Beehive apart from its neighbours is its atmosphere of friendly eccentricity. This is the sort of pub where most of the regulars rejoice in being ‘characters’ and if you visit twice the bar staff remember what you drink, give it a month and you’ll be on first name terms.

If you are looking for a pub experience that isn’t grimly corporate or just visiting the village’s ‘famous five’ drinking dens, this is a splendid stopping place.
