CD REVIEW
The six-track CD and digital recording WEIGHTLESS (AMBIENT TRANSMISSIONS VOL. 2) by top-selling, ambient-music, British group MARCONI UNION is finally out. They first started releasing albums in 2003 and in the early days put out CDs on the All Saints label associated with Brian Eno and also releasing music by experimental/ambient luminaries such as Biosphere, Harold Budd and Roedelius. Over the course of a half-dozen previous releases, Marconi Union has become one of the leading lights of ambient music in the world.
Perhaps now Eno could be taking some lessons from these guys. Marconi Union likes to call their music “transmissions” and that is an apt description because this music almost feels like it floated in on an aether cloud, perhaps straight from the dark, deep reaches of space, maybe traveling for a hundred-thousand years before entering our biosphere and being picked up and packaged by astute musicians. Or not. But however this music came into existence, it is deep. It moves our deepest inner spirit. It propels and steers our life-force in the gentlest of ways. It is telling us something. Are we ready to listen? Can we decipher the message? Will we let it change or lives? Or will we let it drift on by and back into the depths of space as it searches for other beings more acutely attuned to listening?
