Fleetwood Mac, Tango in the Night

This is pure 80's pop music in all of it's layered synthy goodness. It's a good album for that genre but not the best for Fleetwood Mac. It's no where near the greatness of Fleetwood Mac, Rumors or Tusk. That being said times change and bands change and the album isn't all that bad. Christine's 'Little Lies' is definitely the hit off of the album, Stevie's 'Seven Wonders' is wonderfully catchy but sadly not written by her. Lindsey's 'Big Love' is quite good as well. Tango In The Night is a solid effort but you can feel the separateness of the band members more on this album than the past...you can hear them starting to go their separate ways. In the end though I'm just thankful they came together and gave us one more Fleetwood Mac album to listen to.

The end of greatness... with a few saving graces.

I bought this album about 4 years ago, and I'm only really beginning to class it as a good whole album. Although the super group, Fleetwood Mac, are famed for experimentation and studio excess, this album a celebatory mellow album, with far too much excess.

For the Stevie fans out there, you will be disappointed; the hit single 'Seven Wonders' was written by Sandy Stewart, and Nicks' own composition 'When I See You Again' is bland and weak. 'Welcome to the room...Sara', is, however upbeat and a good pop track. But, you can't help but think that she's saving the good songs back for her solo albums.

Christine Mcvie's contributions don't add up, compared to her previous anthems like 'Songbird' and 'Don't Stop'. 'Little Lies' is a heart-felt pop ballad, which is certainly one of the best songs on Tango... but 'Mystified' is weak, with an almost indifferent tone about it. 'Isn't it Midnight' is the hardest song on here, with a hard rock element, that is an average song, which doesn't really suit the Mac.

Lindsey Buckingham's contributions on the other hand, do measure up. 'Big Love' is a very sincere song, form the heart about his romantic complications. The title track, like most of the other songs on here, is a nod towards a romantic, Spanish pop vibe. The weakest of his songs is 'Caroline', which is not very well written and quite bland. It is certainly clear that he is the one attempting to hold this band together; even editing his own voice to make it sound like Nicks' backing vocals.

However, despite all these criticisms of the individual songs, the album as a whole does in fact work. Despite the fact that this is the Mac's weakest album, I do recommend it to new fans of the band, so that the other albums like 'Tusk', and 'Mirage' seem even greater.
