The Show Was Aired On The Bbc In The Later Part Of
The show was aired on the BBC in the later part of the 1980's and enjoyed a very successful spell on the BBC. The show could usually be found about 8.00pm on a Sunday evening and provided about 40 minutes of real entertaining mirth. The show was the brainchild of successful comedy writer Carla Lane and this return to form is arguably her most "famous" work. The show showcased the talents of "unknown" actors which was unusual for this type of comedy show. The show maintained a high standard for a number of years and due its enormous success, only began to suffer when one or two of the main characters decided to leave the show, this ultimately signalled the beginning of end for "Bread" as it was difficult for viewers to accept new actors as the characters had become so popular and identifiable, it plodded on for a while before coming to a limp end in the early nineties. Great family fun and repeats can still be picked up from time to time. highly reccomend.
Bread Was A Under-rated Bbc Situation Comedy Writt
Bread was a under-rated BBC situation comedy written by Carla Lane. Bread first hit our screens in 1986 and ran for 7 series, In total 74 episodes were made.
This comedy was about a family called the Boswells from Liverpool, they were experts at "working the system" and "getting by" in spite of the fact that on paper none of them are employed. They manage to live a fairly good life with the help of social security payments and "jobs on the side" They are a close knit family who all strive to put money on the table for their mother Nellie, hence the name "Bread".
The family members are Nellie, and her children Joey, Jack, Adrian, Aveline and Billy. Freddy Boswell is the estranged husband of Nellie, who he left for a women named Lilo Lil, Who Nellie always called a "Tart." Grandad lived next door, his grandchildren took it in turn to take his meals to him on a plate, he was always ungrateful and usually bad-tempered, I'm not sure if he was Nellie's or Freddy's father as they all called him Grandad.
Bread's most famous episode featured Linda McCartney, who Nellie did not recognize, she asked "Your husband, he works does he?" Paul McCartney later features in this episode when he picks up his wife from the Boswell's in his car.
Bread was aired on a Sunday night at around 8 o clock. I remember I was allowed to stay up and watch it, as soon as it finished that was my cue to go to bed. I used to make a crisp sandwich along with my siblings and settle down and watch it.
Bread is sometimes shown on Sky or cable T.V. and is well worth watching, although it has dated somewhat since it was first screened. All in all a great sitcom, which I have fond memories of, and yes I did sing along to the theme tune!
the dog was named 'mongy', short for 'mongrel'. hope that helps :)
i love this show!!
Can you remember what the family dog was called in Bread? Even the dog was funny. Great times!!
