Quiet, Powerful And Does The Job.
We bought this machine online and put it together with no problems. Adjusted the screw for cutting distance as required until metal shards came off when the machine was running, which has to be done regularly when used.I have used professional chippers in the past as I am a tree surgeon, and didn't expect it to be up to much, I now work for myself doing garden maintenance and pruning and was extremely surprised with the result. Good sized chippings and able to cut up to the 40mm diameter as the machine allows. We have chipped so many large trees and bushes with this machine and we have not been disappointed. Cut conifer,Hawthorne and oak amongst many other types.
This is capable of dealing with pretty much anything in your garden.
It doesn't shred as quick as professional chippers but plough through very nicely.
Palm Frond Specialist
Do you want to mulch your fallen palm fronds ? Don't look at an expensive
wood chipper, get one of these. It will not chop up thick branches etc but
it will mulch palm fronds, something big fast spinning chippers cannot do.
No doubt if your the kind of idiot who would try to shove 40mm dia green tree branches into this device then you will of course be disappointed.
If you use it for its designed purpose it is wonderful and easy to adjust.
Try reading the instructions.

Poorly Designed Cutter Housing. Too Thin
My shredder cutter housing shattered to five pieces with little loading. the design of the housing which is made of thin cast aluminum is not suitable for the sort of work that the manufactures recommend. I would like a spare parts manual sent to me so that I can order a new housing or maybe look at other shredders.

Very Disappointed
Can shred small straight branches but there are large uncut chunks coming out of the shute. Cloggs easily and difficult to clear. No good for shredding small branches with leaves. Narrow input slot means you can put just one handfull in at time and then it cloggs easily. Cutting wheel is poorly located and the whole design concept is bad. Can't say there is anything I liked about it at all.
AVOID.

Inherent Design Fault
At first it worked very well then it jammed often. I found that I could put my hand up the 'inner' plastic chute and insert a fingertip down between the inner and outer chutes - The cause of the jams. Later I noticed the air space between the inner and outer was filling up with debris. This air gap seemed to be for cooling the motor which eventually jammed. The store had a display model without the inner chute and so no gap to trap debris. However on arriving home I found the new one was exactly the same as the old! I could insert a fingertip down the two chutes before even using it.
So I guess I'll be going back every couple of months for a replacement under warranty! Which is quite a drag due to its weight!

A Great Machine If You Select Your Shredding
Ryobi RSH-2455
I have been looking for a garden shredder for some time and had beed checking out the reviews here none of which were very complimentary but I got the chance of an almost new machine on eBay and went for it getting it fo £55 which was far less than even a basic impact shredder would have cost.
Most of the sdverse comments seemed to relate to it not cutting material so this was the first thing I checked and sure enough material was coming out crushed but not cut. I adjusted the cutting face per the instructions and things improved but it soon becaame clear that the blades were all slightly different in length so you can only ever get a clean cut on one blade leaving you with cut lengths of approx 25cm crused and scored which causes the outlet chute to block.NO matter how much you adjust the machine you will not cure this problem and the only solution would be to have the cutting wheel ground so all blades are the same length. On soft materials (I was feeding in lupin stems)these ended up just winding round the cutter and eventually prevented material being drawn through the blades. So far so bad.
Then came the hedge trimmings which was the main reason for purchase.I have a lot of conifer hedging with a lot of cuttings to get rid of. For the larger pieces there were no problems at all and these were mulched down as were the smaller pieces but it is a faff to feed the smaller pieces in in bulk as the slot size is limited to prevent hands getting in. This would apply to all shredders. So again not an overwhelming sucess but did the job.
Then came removal of a section of hedge approx 3m high and a christmas tree whic had grown to around 8m high and consuisted of a mixture of dead and living branchs. These were cut from the main trunk where the diameter was around 40mm or less and then fed into the machine. Performance was impresive. The dead lengths, being dry, cut and crushed into small peices whilst 40mm of living wood was turned into pulp. Watching a 4m length of 4omm branch being devoured bhy the machine was impressive. There was a lot of moaning from the plastic feed chute as the outer branchs and needles were forced through the narrow gap ut what would have been 4 or 5 car loads of wast was reduced to a builders bag full which fit in the boot.
Overall probably not the best machine to have for soft waste but if you are in the business of thinning out hedges and removing saplings it may be for you.

Avoid !
Very disappointing performance overall. Prone to jams which are difficult to clear, and struggles with any wood thicker than around 25mm. The cast aluminium motor / blade assembly split after only a few hours use, leaving the machine unrepairable.

Rag 2455
This is my second shot at the rsh 2455 ryobi shredder, anyone seriously giving this product more than one star I would ask them to disclose their conflict of interest regarding this machine. I suspect this machine was engineered under conditions in where perfectly circular straight 20mm diameter, 40cm length pegs were fed into it, anything else in real world situations I find it struggles with, anything smaller and with a few turns struggles to throw through the blade even with tensioning, it has been the most frustrating thing I have thrown $300 at for least return. The first machine seized and would not go after consistent power cycles, I returned it, now my second one has seized after little more than filling a 60L tub. Most of this wood has been left to dry for approximately 4 months. It's not up to the expectations of cleaning up most of the scraps of say an apple tree. Most of the issues are that the rotor does not deflect the material well into the blade, so mOst of your branch bits and sticks do a merry dance at the top, reverse makes them forage around in an artistic form of stick ballet bouncing around and jam so are hard to retrieve out without turning the machine off and finding away of extruding them, extremely time wasting which was my whole expectation of this machine.... To save time... So I wish to help out others in saving time, consider you choice carefully when looking at this particular model.

I Had Exactly The Same Problem As A Previous Revie
I had exactly the same problem as a previous reviewer. The machine was fairly lightly used over about three years. It did a fair job of shredding branches that had been left to dry for a few months. Newly cut green wood passed through the blade pretty much unmolested. Yesterday the alloy blade housing cracked and split rendering the machine useless. A Ryobi brushcutter I bought at the same time also suffered a major mechanical failure recently. I will not buy any Ryobi branded product again.

Just Bought The Ryobi Rsh-2455 And Tested It Quite
Just bought the Ryobi RSH-2455 and tested it quite heavily for a couple of hours of constant operation yesterday, so far so good! Well... almost (see below).
Even without an initial adjustment of the shaving plate the machine produce a very good result, only some types of twigs were not fully cut but it doesn't matter at all for its purpose. I expect an adjustment to improve the result even further but you have to keep in mind these types of shredders are expected to leave some type of materials just partly processed.
On the negative side, my machine has a nasty habit of starting either in forward or reverse, seemingly unaffected by the forward/reverse knob. I have to determine visually what direction it has when starting it, sometimes it takes a few starts for it to start in the forward mode. This is not acceptable of course and the machine is going to be replaced or repaired on warranty. This is why I could only give it four stars.
The machine is still extremely useful even with this minor glitch in the control system and I'm very happy with the overall quality. I especially like the great power and the instant autoreverse function that kicks in if you happen to have too tough loads occasionally or something gets stuck in the hopper, no drama at all - just stop, fix the trouble and restart the machine, up and running within 30 seconds typically.
Just wanted to comment that if this uncertain direction of movement is a common behavior on this model, it could perhaps explain some of the user experiences. In reverse mode, it is still possible to feed some branches through the machine but they will of course not be processed, only some dents from the cutting steel operating in reverse and fed through a quite big gap on the wrong side of the mill.
Q&A
Ryobi RSH22455 shredder. Power to machine with power light displayed. Shredder does not operate. Stripped down to check if siezed. Everything turning ok. Greased up moving parts. On/off switch feels a bit 'gritty' and does not turn on machine. Any ideas?Â
How can clear when the mulcher is jam and the motor keeps tripping out? Can take the covers to get the blades
How can I unclog the mulching teeth?
My shredder's stopped working and apart from a broken fan, which I can find a spare for, the overload circuit breaker is caput. The only way I can see to replace it is to buy the complete switch assembly for £75 - too much for me. Does anyone know where I might find just the circuit breaker?
