So Disappointed With Multiyork And Their Sofas- Poor Quality

We are so disappointed with Multiyork Furniture. We bought two different sofas in December 2015. The two seater Classic is rarely sat on and the three seater Teddington is used for about 3 hours an evening about 4 times a week. The skirt on the three seater has risen up in the centre of the sofa. The cushions are a mix of foam and feather, and quite frankly, are so uncomfortable and are all lumpy and are losing their shape even after redressing. We were advised we would need to dress the cushions occasionally, and we do do that. However, as soon as we sit on them the cushions sink at the corners/edges and we are having to wedge a scatter cushion to level our posture! We contacted Multiyork about a month ago to express our disappointment and they sent out someone from Homeserve to take a look and do a technical assessment and do his report. He reported we needed to dress the cushions every time we sit on them! Ridiculous! I told him that wasn't what we had been advised when purchasing the sofas. We knew if we had had feather cushions, then this would have been the case. He redressed the cushions, and to be honest they looked worse than ever! I wrote my comments on his report. We then had a call from the lady who sold us the sofas (to be fair she was very helpful and understood where we were coming from and said herself she didn't think it was good enough!). Our complaint was then sent to someone higher within the company and we have today had a letter advising that 'they do not consider there to be grounds to dispute the Homeserve findings and on this basis I regret that this claim is considered to be invalid'.

These sofas cost around £4,000. We researched sofas for about 18 months - 2 years and thought we had found a reputable company offering good quality sofas. The service before we bought the sofas was absolutely brilliant. However, apart from the lady who sold us the sofas and her efforts to try and help us, MultiYork's after service, although they have sent Homeserve out, they seem to have dismissed the fact that the sofas are not up to the standard they should be. What use is a sofa, that is about 7 months old, hardly used, and has now become too uncomfortable to sit on?! I cannot believe they are now dismissing our points; they have had our money and now don't seem to give a flying fig! They have advised us to go to The Furniture Ombudsman who will carry out an independent inspection at our expense! (refundable to us if they determine there is evidence of manufacturing defects).....

I was always under the impression that their furniture was top quality... sadly I realise circa £4,000 later, they are not!

The joke of this is that we also bought a 2nd hand suite of similar design to go with the sofas we have bought through M.Y. which are 15 years old, and have foam seat cushions and feather back cushions. These are so comfortable, and I know they came from a home where they were used well, and I don’t need to dress them daily.

So, that said, does that indicate that their standards and quality have dropped??!!.......

I will not be recommending MultiYork to anyone! I will point them in the direction of ebay instead!

Oh, and no doubt I will get a message from her expressing how sorry she is to hear about our disappointment with the sofas and MultiYork itself..... just like all the other reviews I have been reading.. but...... that doesn't make our sofas more comfortable and doesn't fix the rising skirt situation!

We will be contacting the Ombudsman…..

Misleading, Low Quality, Poor Service

Review by Trebicki

Don't be misled by claims of quality particularly with regards to the fabrics and Staingard protection.

Our fabric stains with just water. It's takes an age for an appointment for inspection, battle to get it resolved - most of the time it can't be cleaned and so parts have to be replaced. The whole process takes months.

Buy elsewhere, ikea furniture looks better for longer. This company don't deserve the reputation they seem to have engineered.

Avoid.

Buy Elsewhere

Tricked into thinking we were buying a quality sofa and fabric. Multiyork no better than ikea, avoid and buy somewhere else. Not the high standard company they used to be.

Fabric has deteriorated and faded within 12 months.

Fabric stains easily even with water.

Staingard protection ineffective and policy prevents you from attempting to clean yourself.

When Staingard do eventually turn up they can't get stains out. It takes months for replacement covers.

Multiyork refer complaints to Staingard.

Staingard refer complaints to Multiyork.

You will get stuck in the middle and have to face up to battling at the small claims court.

All the while you have a stained sofa you are not allowed to clean without invalidating your warranty.

Just buy elsewhere.

Worst Customer Service Ever Experienced

MultiYork look like they make great furniture but at a much higher cost than elsewhere. I was prepared to take that chance when they had a sale. The staff are fine in store, but I found serious problems once the deposit was taken.

Firstly, I was told I would be contacted before the delivery date. I wasn't. It was only be contacting MultiYork that I found that they hadn't made the sofas yet after 7 weeks and that there was a problem with the material and it would be another 7 weeks.

During this additional 7 weeks they mailed me a £100 off voucher along with their latest sales, very good at mailing you the sales stuff, rubbish at keeping their active customers informed.

I was given a new date, but again not hearing anything, I contacted MultiYork to find out that they were still having problems with the material. Only this time they offered to change the material to one of the same grade/standard as way of compensation. Which if they'd have done this before, I probably would be writing a much better review.

On pressing them for actual compensation, I was informed they'd only offer goodwill after delivery of the sofas and that they'd contact me once they'd been able to check the material.

That contact didn't come and rather than chasing them for a 3rd time, I cancelled my order and went to Next saving myself over £1,000 for the same thing and having it delivered still before MultiYork could manage. By this point I had no trust left in them regarding the goodwill, likely it would have just been another money off voucher to use in store rather than discounting the original order.

In short, MultiYork, great at taking your money but you simply can not trust them to deliver or keep you informed which is appalling considering the high costs that they charge.

Worst customer service I have ever had the misfortune to experience.

Under Stuffed Seats

sofa came with oil mark. Seat cushions that collapsed after 24 hours. After numerous phone calls and emails with photos sent they came out 3weeks later to clean off mark and state cushions understuffed. No one apologised or returned my calls as promised . I had to keep phoning always spoke to someone different even though I had bought from shop and sat on an identical sofa. I was told I had ordered the wrong stuffing.6weeks later I still didn't have replacement cushions. I had had enough and told them to take the sofa away and return my money.Which they did.Would never use company again . Customer service terrible.

Mutiyork Sutton Surrey

Be aware of the sale prices in Multiyork Sutton store and always check the prices of the item in other stores. A painting was on sale in Sutton for £285, the same one in Kingston branch costed £156! A very unpleasant salesman in Sutton branch.

Multiyork Lynford Suite

We bought a Lynford sofa and 2 chairs in 1997 from The Harrogate store and they have been fantastic, the seat cushions have kept shape and in as good condition as when purchased. We have now ordered a different style arm chair so I'm hoping the quality and workmanship is as good as my first purchase from them.

The staff were helpful even to go as far as allow the purchase of extra fabric for me to make my own side cushions. The arm chair was ordered along with extra fabric from the York store and the staff were just as helpful as the previous store.I will review again when my armchair arrives on quality etc

MultiYork of old seems to be much better at customer service. Our suite has armchairs with collapsed springs. Recovering the suite Oct 2009 cost £2000 plus, and the covers still look good. Peterborough MYk staff were good and helpful.

Q&A

WendyQuartermaine

I have a Multiyork 'Teddington' 2 seater sofa. The fabric needs replacing - unfortunately I don't know the material reference but the colour is cream and is self pattened. Wondered if on the off chance you would be able to advise if you know of this particular pattern (although there may of course be several)?  Your advice would be appreciated.
