Stay Clear

Absolute awful and cost me my home and out of pocket with fees, 3 months later still no offer of acceptance due to lack of information between broker and themselves, the amount of misinformation and time consuming unreal, should of been moving in after 3 months still not waiting for my offer to be accepted I’d stay well clear from Nationwide as I’ve had a terrible experience.

Isa Transfer

A nightmare - didn’t appear to understand or carry out the ISA transfer process correctly - took far too long - didn’t appear concerned about the fact that their request to transfer sent to the existing provider wasn’t being received. Customer had to intervene and virtually manage the whole process with both providers. Nationwide customer service is non existent, there is no inter-department communication. Staff attitude poor and not customer friendly.

Service And Knowledge Completely Lost

Saw an advisor regarding fixing and reducing the term of my mortgage. Let the shop confused more than before. Thereafter moved to Tsb. Much easier to move, but...

Trying to get a redemption statement from them (NW) is another matter altogether.

Company solicitors acting on behalf of Tsb can’t get a redemption statement the account numbers I provided (statements) and ones nationwide provided (via secure message) are wrong! Wtf...

Kept on hold for 45 mins over the phone. Utter joke.

Lodged complaint as not heard from them what so ever.

Pulling Teeth From A Stone

I recently read on the Nationwide Mortgage site that they aim to respond to any mortgage applications within 48 hours - do they not realise the stress they cause by not approving mortgage applications - nearly two weeks later I am having to push them for an answer (second time) - they received all my paperwork as a first time buyer (8 weeks ago) and then asked for a structural engineer to come and see the property - he then sent them the report and then they asked for a builder to give a quote to do small repairs - in all of this time I do not know what value they have put on the property, had to pay for the structural engineer and still do not know if my mortgage application has been approved - how long will the seller wait for me (or not me as the case may be)and will I loose my dream home because it is sitting on someone's desk somewhere

Hi, I could have written this myself only I’m yet to submit report. Ridiculous unwilling to advise if they are prepared to lend or not! Hope you’ve got answers wanted!

Advice From Someone Who Has Struggled With Paperwork

When you have gone through the process of selecting your mortgage, to complete the application you will be asked to send a proof of deposit and a recent payslip to Nationwide.

Firstly they specify particular file types. After my first unsuccessful attempt I discovered a website online which will convert between different file types - my first piece of advice would be to use this.

when they reject your application on the basis of this paperwork not being of the correct type they give virtually no feedback on why it has been rejected, and you have to wait 2 days processing time to be told it's not accepted. I tried ringing them up to ask if what I'd sent in was correct and they told me to wait the full 2 days.

Now that I have had my proof rejected 4 times I have finally been offered some detailed feedback. Essentially they will not except any screen shot or format which you get from a mobile banking app. So if like my fiancée you do not own any other technical gadget, you need to go into your local branch and ask them to print off a paper copy of your statement, photograph it and then send it to Nationwide.

Perhaps I would have realised this sooner if I hadn't had mixed advice from different people at Nationwide. One guy told me to send in any format in the email because he could deal with it, one guy told me a screenshot would be fine... I am so frustrated with the entire process and hate the fact that it has taken so long to do something which should be so simple. Even more irritating is having to act as a mediator between the bank and my fiancée, with bizarrely the proof of deposit they're asking for appearing in my name rather than his, just because I was the one to originally arrange the meeting with the bank.

This whole process has made me feel miserable and angry, and really helpless in the face of a huge system, which cannot offer immediate feedback or explain to me in fewer than 4 failed attempts what i am doing wrong.

Rip-off Overdraft Fees

Avoid this bank! I was about £500 overdrawn on a £650 overdraft. In the course of several months, I was hit by hundreds of pounds of fees. Daily overdraft fees of £15.50(!!!), bounce fees for just about everything including standing orders which should not even have fees, then the fees add on and you get charged unauthorized overdraft fees. It's opaque as hell to understand. Called up to complain: "It's in your T&C, sir. You should read them". They just see short-term way to rip you off like a payday lender. Changing my bank and my wife's as well as result.

Someone Needs To Shake This Company Up

If anyone said to me they were going to apply for a mortgage with Nationwide I would strongly advise them not. We applied for a mortgage with them in Nov 2016, it took them until 10th Jan 17 to approve the mortgage, due to the "we need another document" which disappears into the system for days at a time, then they come back and ask for another. The mortgage was approved and we had an offer accepted on a property, but pulled out due to a problem with the extension and possible subsidence. Our mortgage advisor told us he would just need to put in a change of property detail form for our next one, which he did, and after two weeks having heard nothing about a valuation on the new one, we were told we'd have to put in a whole new mortgage application!! We did this as by this time (13 weeks down the line), we were starting to get fraught. After another 2 weeks waiting, I rang my mortgage advisor who wasn't in, so I thought I'd ring Nationwide direct to find out what was happening. I was told by Nationwide that it had gone back to the underwriters and our mortgage had been declined!!! They had only just approved it for the first property, yet they sent it to a different underwriter who turned it down!! Our mortgage advisor battled for three days and eventually they overturned there decision saying the second underwriter was not aware the mortgage had already been approved. We waited for a mortgage offer which duly arrived in the post. On the searches for our new property, the mining search showed up a previous claim for subsidence 20 years ago but it had been settled. She informed Nationwide who told her they'd have to pass it back to the underwriter and it could affect the mortgage offer". We were told we'd have an answer on the Friday. After receiving no answer on the Friday our solicitor rang and they informed her that "were waiting for a decision from the underwriters, we wont know until next Weds". Our solicitor blew her top and told them this was not good enough, and they guaranteed an answer for her on the Monday (we needed to complete by the Friday as we had to leave our rented property on the Saturday). We did receive an answer and we did move into our beautiful new home on the Friday, but not until we'd had nearly four months of stress, this nearly caused me a breakdown, we were treated no better than common criminals..We explained why we needed to complete on a property sale as quickly as possible. (for reasons I wont go into) However, explaining this to the staff there just seemed to go over their head, they have no sympathy whatsoever for their customers or their needs. The whole process made me physically ill, and even though we now have our beautiful home, they could have made things so much simpler. Their systems are archaeic and so many different people look at one file theres no consistency. The only good thing about them, is the way they keep you updated with texts and emails regarding the offer letters being sent and application received etc. The mortgage deals they offer however are fantastic, and this is the ONLY reason we saw it through with them, and the fact we were too far down the line to start the whole process again with another company!

Q&A

Laurenjade17

Did anybody have overdrafts and get their mortgage approved? Thanks in advance

mickpumford

Yes they may but it doesn't mean you won't get the mortgage. Ordinarily they will require you to include it as part of your mortgage loan amount and place a condition that the Overdraft is cleared.

Come back to me if you wait more than three weeks for a decision.

Hi I'm about to go through with a mortgage application I have a 99 percent credit record full time employment never been in debt.  Just one thing is on my 3 months bank statement it shows a transaction for 1000 pound to betfred betting website which was for a grand national betting syndicate at work as soon as I placed the bet on my phone I put the money back in to my account, does anyone know if this could  ruin my mortgage chances?

mickpumford

Lol it doesn't matter where you spend you disposable income however, if it goes to n underwriter for approval they might ask you to go to ladbrookes for better odds.

But no, as long a s you don't have a credit account with a bookie that might affect your score with the reference agencies.

I am trapped in my home as Nationwide are refusing to port my mortgage stating I have failed in their credit checks . They will only consider an appeal if I reduce my mortgage from £123000 to £100000 under. 50% LTV.  I wanted to port £122,000, so slightly less, as I'm downsizing and want to use some equity to pay off some bills etc. Does anyone have any advice?

Konnichi

To cut a very long story short nationwide have taken over three months

to complete our mortgage in fact we still don't have a mortgage offer.

Before we involved the complaints department we had a mortgage agreed in

principle, the house valued then told due to the law change we had to

go back into branch to be told verbally that my partner would be over

the age of retirement at the maturity of the mortgage. At this rate she

might be over a 100! They then tried to re process the mortgage and said

the computer was crashing so I left the branch without success then

after a further two months they said my partner was too old so they

needed to cut the term. Then IT couldn't repair the application form so

we had to do a manual application then at three months they said that we

failed affordability which we new was not correct! Then they said

goodbye and have a nice day! You can imagine the upset and stress this

caused. Then I put in a complaint mainly to get the numerous credit

checks removed. I was advised they had reprocessed the mortgage and

guess what, we can have the mortgage! So here is the question the

nationwide have said that they will compensate us for the inconvenience

and delay and appear to want me to say what I think this should be. Does

anyone have any experience of this?

damiemariah

I have had our mortgage accepted in principal, and they have now booked the survey on our new house, does this indicate that they have approved the mortgage subject to the survey?

Thanks.

aebruce40

It will be subject to survey and all the other checks they do regarding your finances.
