Good But Low Field Of Vision
I've had a shoei raid for many years now so upgraded to the xr1000. Unfortunately riding a sportsbike I find the upper visor/helmet aperature is too low and as your sitting on your bike its difficult to view the road up ahead without straining to tilt your head back more. Comparing both the shoei raid and xr1000 from the front I can see the xr1000 has a much lower 'upper visor opening' than the raid. Fine on my previous sit-up Suzuki bandit but not my current sportsbike.
UPDATE.
I purchased Shoei's Whisper Strip which does a good job at reducing the noise level but does increase the difficulty in putting on and taking off the helmet. But is effective at keeping out drafts and reducing wind noise.
I also bought the Shoei Chin Strip which is a mesh material and stops the draft coming up in the front of the helmet. Very effective and does not reduce noise level at all. IMO the helmet should have been supplied with both from new.
Cost was £21.99 and £11.99. But is a worthy upgrade. Shame they don't make a pin lock for this model that gives max vision, as the standard pin lock upper edge cuts straight across your line of sight.
UPDATE.
I've now used this on various bikes from Yamah Fazers, Ducati Monsters, small scooters and Honda VFR's and it's low brow isn't anywhere near as much a problem as on a full on sportsbike.
Standard visor without pinlock fogs up after just a breath or two, but with a pin insert its much better tho can still fog after a minute or so.
Noise level is high, i have no breath guard or lower helmet skirt so wind can get up into the helmet. It's a £22 item and £14 for the breath deflector. I've read they make a difference but not a magic cure.
Double d ring chin strap is ace, i've just bought a new Shark Vision R Series 2(have already reviewed this helmet as well) with the rachet style strap and its pressing against my throat. This XR1000 is nice and well positioned just right.
Top vents work well but chin vent is little use. Whether that changes with a lower skirt/curtain fitted to the base of the helmet i don't know.
Visor operation is good, stiff detents keep visor is any position even at speed, demist position works ok. Visors easy to change and no fear of anything breaking when doing so.
I have a large, and standard cheek pads do push too much against the sides of my mouth, but various thickness cheek pads are available and should help custom fit this helmet.
Its now a discontinued, and even its later brother the XR1100 is too, but it is still a good dependable and generally good helmet. The genuine light tint shoei visor is good to use as a allrounder, light enough tint for dark early mornings/evenings(not pitch black tho), and yet tinted enough to cut down on sun glare when its bright during the day.

If You Have A Shoei Shaped Head As I Do Then These
If you have a Shoei shaped head as I do then these are the best helmets you can buy. My previous lid was an Arai which just didn't quite suit my head shape. When I first tried the Shoei it fealt good but the real test has been the quality of the fit after 4 years and 30,000 miles. I even tested it in the most extreme way and it was faultless for protection. Now looking to replace with the XR1100.

Overview Had My Xr 1000 For About 2 Years Now
OVERVIEW
Had my XR 1000 for about 2 years now and have ridden with it on a few bikes, I cannot fault the comfort and fit, its definitely the best helmet yet. In fact the only down side with mine is the noise level once you get over 40 mph. On a fully faired bike like a BMW R1150RT or a Pan Euro its fine so long as the screen is up, however if your riding a naked bike or something with a smaller screen I find the noise just too much to bear, even with earplugs in you still carn't stand it for long periods.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion I wouldn't recommend this lid if your a long distance rider or if you use the motorway on a regular basis. However its ideal for round town and short hops out and about. Would be very interested if anyone else has this problem with the XR 1000.
I agree, up to 40mph its bearable but i wear earplugs regardless of what speed i'm doing. But in comparison my new Shark Vision R Series 2 helmet(2014) is quieter at 60mpg than the XR1000 is at 40. I'd say its the windnoise getting un under the bottom of the helmet and lack of padding around the base to seal it.
