Thule EasyBase 949 Bar Carrier

My easybase missed a hole in a bar. Thule forgot to drill the hole... It took me an hour to put everything together to find out I couldn't use the screw to secure everything.

It is a pitty the quality control of Thule fails causing customer frustration.

I would expect better quality from Thule.

Had lot of trouble lining up the holes to assemble had to use brute force & ignorance good job had a rubber hammer!!

Hopefully will now fit ok on my motorhome towbar ok

What can I asy, this item has a myriad of options to make it a flexible piece of motoring equipment. On its own it is a good sized platform for moving dirty items without having to clean the car after, add the bike-rack/basket orr lockable bag and who knows the possibilities that open up.

Not sure of the actual weight limit for it as the documentation says it is 15kg and you can add 60kg to it being mindful of the towball limit, this implies that if the cycle rack option is taken the bikes cannot total more than 60kg minus the weight of the optional rack.

As far as the fixing is concerned, just use the supplied spanner to tighten the nut to 90Nm (35KG), although I must say that Westphalia have a much easier/elegant solution, the carrier also folds which makes storage easier as the Thule item is a bit bulky to man(woman?) handle on and off the vehicle.

I have had my EasyBase for a while and use it with both a Thule back box and with cycle carriers. Very stable - absolutely no wobble even when heavily laden - and perfect for carrying bikes without risk of straps and hooks that are found on a lot of cycle racks damaging your paintwork. I can even access the boot on my car (boot, not tailgate) with the EasyBase attached to the car, loaded with three adult bikes. It folds up when not on the car, and can be removed very easily so that you don't have to cart it round unnecessarily. Combined with the back box, it offers great carry space, and attracts a huge amount of attention when we go camping. Your speed is not limited when driving, as it is when towing a trailer, which is another plus point.

Thoroughly recommend this product...we bought one to carry suitcases when our family of 6 go on holiday. We find it perfect. We carry 3 or 4 cases, at the airport or hotel the system is easy to unattach and stores away in the car. Certainly no wobbles have been noticed, feels reallt secure.

Let's get one thing straight The EasyBase 949 platform absolutely, cegorically does not "wobble". Attached correctly (as any tow ball device must be) it is rock solid. Mine is used with a Thule Backup 900 cargo box which usually has 50-60kg of stuff in it - but whether "loaded" or not the base's tow ball attachment does not move a millimetre.I have used Thule products for nearly 20 years and still use the very first roof box I bought back then.

Note, however, that adaptable and versatile as the EasyBase 949 is it does not allow the rear door of an estate (or many hatchbacks) to be opened onced attached! Many cycle carriers do so if it really a cycle carrier you need then go for a specialised carrier.

The Thule EasyBase 949 Bar Carrier is a towbar carrier I've used in the past to help transport extra kit around. It is a nicer alternative to trailers, but it can wobble and this can be felt throughout the car!
