Cherokee 2.5 Crd Limited 2004

Bought in late 2015 for £4,000 (independent garage) with 79,000 miles on the clock. The Limited body kit and interior look great and the whole thing was in good condition. It had a recent cam belt change and MOT, although this picked up 'rusty front springs' and some brake attention was required.

The handbrake isn't good and the whole rear brake assembly needs replacing. It's a crude but simple to install system with only manual handbrake adjustment (at each brake drum!). Recently got a full set of Goodyear Wrangler tyres for £350 fitted too. Shop around for parts to save money.

I've not taken it off-road yet, but in low-traction road conditions it seems good. There's a rumbling noise coming from underneath in 4WD mode which needs investigation (I suspect it's something to do with the half-shafts or transfer box). Runs fine in two wheel drive mode, but still getting a bit of a 'metallic' noise at over 30mph.

Fuel economy is relatively poor (20-25mpg average, 30mpg at a push). We knew this prior to purchase though. It's a heavy old truck at 2 metric tons and it's not quick off the mark, but we didn't buy it to win races! Purchased mostly for size, comfort and the 'go anywhere' ability (and for the name too!).

The Limited trim has leather interior, heated front seats, parking sensors, cruise control, A/C, CD stereo, full airbags, roof bars (side runners) and it also came with a new front chrome bar and side-step running bars.

Only had it a few months and love it to bits, despite little things needing to be done. If you do your own servicing, enjoy being 'involved' in driving a big vehicle and love the 'chunkiness' of these big American SUV's (but in a slightly more compact package), then this is definitely for you!

PLUS: Sturdy, strong off-road capabilities, comfort, fun factor, great heritage, good looking machine, 'commanding' driving position, good all-round views, the feel of a 'big' truck without actually being too oversized, boot/load space, a genuine pleasure to drive.

MINUS: Thirsty, needs looking after, some areas of finish can deteriorate with age, braking systems could be better, not quick, heavy.

Comfortable , Practical 4x4

owned mine now for a while , bought it from a small garage and it came with service history which reports very little problems in its entire life. its been used for towing caravens etc and came fitted with attachments for such like.

engine is to some people a bit noisy but i actually like the noise it makes, its reassuringly grunty on take off, and settles down to a good sound when driven on open roads. instruments are clear ans well set out but the display above the drivers head could do with more set up options for my liking. standard sound system sounds good too.

other things like steering, brakes etc feel solid and responsive though the suspension does feel a tiny bit harsh at times for a 4x4. it currently is averaging 25 mpg but i have not been using it for long trips of late and its 4x4 so people shouldnt expect economy car fuel usage!

all in all i really enjoy driving the jeep.

I had a Discovery 300TDi that was terrible! It turned out in the end that some clown had fitted a new timing belt and had got the timing out. The valves had made dents in the pistons and it was a slug. Once fixed with new pistons, new head and valves, new uprated radiator and new timing belt kit it was excellent.

Had someone fitted a new belt to your truck? There are a LOT of cack-handed mechanics around these days.

Bought A Brand New Cherokee On New Years Eve When

bought a brand new cherokee on new years eve when the bad weather started, this car is fantastic in bad weather ,never a problem. i have had a range rover before which was great but fell to bits eventaully and for me the jeep compares really well, apart from the latest RR which is for a pecieved lifestyle not for offroad. looks- i love the look of this car, far better than the previous model. comfort, superb leather and better back support than my jaguar, plenty of seat options. power - plenty to overtake and axcelerate but its not super fast (its a 4x4), adequate. handling - people have slagged it off? no diffrence to anything i have driven, no problems, great vision, fine.

quality inside - ok dashboard losts of plastic but have you been in a ford ghia? they have similar amounts of plas..practical and good enough.dials are easy to see. practical - when you bring the seats down (all except the driver) its brillant. gor sat nav, excellent cd'dvd and £18,600 i have been extremely pleased with it - fule consumption is average , i get around 28 -30 at a push compared to a range rover thats good.

I Have Owned The Jeep 2.5crd Ltd Since 2004 And Ha

I have owned the jeep 2.5crd ltd since 2004 and have had nothing but trouble with it. since 2004 during the manufactureres warranty period i have had in excess of £18000 worth of work carried out these include new engine, turbo, clutch slave and master cylinder, front prop shaft, new bearings in transfer box and new bearings in rear diff, 2 sets of alloy wheels due to corrosion.

it is currently 2 years out of the warranty period now and again i have a whining diff. At a cost of £650 the dealership replaced all the bearings again, the noise finally went. after doing just over 1000 miles the whining is back and the dealership in after more money to rectify the problem that they should have cured in the first place.

after contacting jeep uk after no joy with the dealership dispute, they basically told me that they were sorry to hear about all the trouble encountered with the vehicle but unfortunatley due to the age etc of it they would not pay to have it rectified, and washed there hands of the matter.

i know i have been very unlucky with this jeep, but its been well looked after and always dealership maintained from new and done very little work only doing 56000 miles the new engine being in at 24000! i dont think the vehicle is fit for purpose and as a designed rugged 4x4 i don't think the cherokee makes the final cut!

Customer service of jeep dealerships also doesn't quite cut it either and trying to get major parts delivered also takes up to a couple of weeks.

Q&A

lesmonyama

I bought second hand Jeep Cherokee 2.5 crd sport. I would like to service the car personally. I would like to know after how long and what to replace when doing the service (referring to oil,oil filter etc-not major service). Up to so far, for the past two years, I am happy with the performance except diesel consumption. I will appreciate your advice, if anyone can help?

djjoe

Does it have a pump on the fuel tank?
