After Owning Several Mb Cars Over The Years, I Pur
After owning several MB cars over the years, I purchased a MB E320 Cdi car in April 2004. They overcharged me with the car road tax to begin with, 13 months???
There has been a knocking noise since the day I bought it, it has been back nine times to MB to fix this fault without success. I have taken the car to two different MB garages and they have replaced the entire suspension system several times, and still the noise is there each time I take it over any uneven roads and especially speed bumps.
Their head office offer the usual apologies and then you hear nothing from them because they pass the buck to the local MB dealer. MB have told me they are aware of this fault on some new MB cars but they cannot find the fault, let alone fix it. MB have noticed this fault on some brand new cars, but cannot explain why it happens on some cars and not others!!
MB Tamworth have now told me there is nothing more they can do and I have to accept this fault as a standard feature of this particular model. Do I look like an idiot who spends nearly £40k on a new car and have to live with a noise coming from beneath the car each time it goes over a bump. I think not! The general manager from MB Tamworth has told me they have done all they can and can do no more, I pointed out why have MB tried to fix this problem on so many occasions over the past year or so, his response was that MB was just trying to please me!
I have taken legal advice and intend to take the matter further. Don't buy the new E320 Cdi, in my opinion, you may regret it.

I Moved From A Bmw 328i To The 01 Mercedes Benz E
I moved from a BMW 328i to the 01 Mercedes Benz E Class 320 Elegance xecutive Car mainly due to boredom--I'd had three BMW's and was ready for a change. At first I didn't like the change too much--missed the sport handling of the Beemer. But after a few months the MB grew on me and now I like the well organized amenities and overall quality. For examples, despite its generally great qualities, (1) the BMW speedometer was off by 3 to 5 mph (depending on speed), which I never really got used to. The MB is dead on accurate in everything; (2) The BMW cruise control had a lag after setting it and then a recovery. The MB immediately captures the speed with no perceptible movement at all. The MB is 5 years newer than the BMW.
I (vainly perhaps) decided if I was going to drive a luxury car, I should get a certain amount of, well, ATTENTION. The Beemers have become so (justifiably) popular and numerous that no one notices.
As expected, my MB purchase did get me admiration and envy. Bear in mind, I bought a black car with black upholstery, and it is the "sport" model, which has 17 inch alloy wheels and just looks more macho and cool than the standard model.
People have approached me in parking lots and said things like "Cool car", and "That's a nice looking car", and such.
Lawyers at the courthouse where I practice (lawyers are the worst for envy and concern about appearances) have tried to find out how much I paid for it, and have given me appraising looks like "How does this court-appointed lawyer get into this, he must be onto something else I don't know about."
Generally I get a lot more respect than with the faithful old 328i.
I'm at 60,000 miles now and I have little to complain about. One of the dash LED's burnt out segments at only about 30,000 miles but that was replaced on warranty. The glove box lock assembly fell off due to the two attach screws backing out (from vibration I suppose), which a dealer fixed for no charge.
I bought and stow in the trunk small collapsible wheel chocks to deal with that problem (above).
The car is under the Certified Program with a 100,000 mile warranty. I'll see how it goes from here to 100,000.
I'm at 130,000 now without any problems to mention. As soon as the car was out of warranty I (luckily) found an excellent independent shop. They charge about half of what M Benz does and are much more helpful/approachable. I can go into the shop and inspect the remaining brake pad wear with the mechanic while the car is on the hoist, for example.
I replaced the front brake pads a little after 100,000. The rear pads were still serviceable. I came back at about 125,000 and the rear pads didn't show any additional wear! The mechanic accused me of dragging my feet out of the car to stop it!
I commute on highways so there is little braking.
I am now having some minor problems with the computerized ignition keys which are intermittant opening the door locks. I am monitoring this, but the manual override means the problem is not of any real significance.
I continue getting average 27--28 mpg highway with 30,000 on the plugs installed after 100,000. These are 100,000 mile plugs, with aviation-style side electrodes (two per plug).
The car does not use oil between changes (15,000 miles).

From What I Hear, My Experience With A 2000 Model
From what I hear, my experience with a 2000 model Mercedes Benz E Class 320 Elegance estate executive car is pretty typical.
My car has major surface rust on its bonnet, rear wings + wheelarches, all four doors, and the rear tailgate. In addition, the roof and bonnet are peppered with small blisters under the paint, all of which are heading towards eruptions of one kind or another. MB assure me these are 'stone chips' - utter nonsense of course, but that's MB for you.
Recent model Mercedes cars (particularly Cs, Es, CLs and CLKs) corrode like a 1972 Fiat.
A switch to water-based paint around 2000 and an insane attempt to improve falling profit margins by reducing paint specs to just 100 microns (250 would be appropriate for a decent car) has caused enormous problems for MB - or more accurately, for owners of its poorly built cars.
Initially, the firm quietly undertook to replace entire panels, but during 2004, there was a switch of policy to a quick shot-blast and 'blow-over' with paint. Dealers are allowed just a couple of hours labour + materials for each panel, so MB's spend per rusty panel is probably around £50.00. Nice savings for MB, and a guarantee of further rot in future for the hapless owner.
Of course, many of us have 30 year perforation warranties on our cars. Sadly, this is of little help. For starters, most MB rust is due to the appalling paint quality - rust rarely starts from the inside, so there is often no 'perforation' at all, just a spreading eyesore of flaking, disintegrating paint. This allows MB to duck its responsibilities at any time it chooses. Most rust repairs being conducted by MB at present are 'goodwill' repairs.
In any event, miss just one dealer service and your 30 year warranty is void.
The result, of course, is that residuals on MB cars are now very poor. I was offered just £8,500 by an MB dealer for my July 2000 E-class estate - original list around £48k. This is the worst depreciation figure I have ever seen for any car, regardless of make or model.
How sad it is to see a 'quality' carmaker lose its way so quickly.
Smart car anyone?
I have a 2001 Avantgarde Estate and this review confirms my problems with the corrosion on my car: - tailgate, roof, doorframe. Add to that the most tempermental electrical system I've ever had the misfortune to encounter, arrogant dealers that charge prices that you couldn't make up - how about just under £300 to change the spark plugs! I could go on with listing the problems I've had but won't. If this vehicle carried a Daewoo (sorry, Chevrolet) badge I'd be disgusted at the quality for the price, but M-B? They are having a laugh. It is my first and definitely last "Benz".
If Newton was still around, he'd have written a law for it:
M-B + Quality = Myth
My 2001 E320 MB has pitted paint on the hood, trunk and roof. Said to say this $55,000 heap of junk needs a new paint job. When complaining to the dealership it's like we have 2 heads!!!! They just look and say it must be my fault. H E L L O !!!!!! Why not a class action suit? Anyone interested?

I Have Owned Various Mercedes Benz Executive Cars
I have owned various Mercedes Benz executive cars for twenty years now and they keep getting better. I have had my current 2003 Mercedes Benz E Class 320 Elegance for over a year now and I haven't had any problems whatsoever. It's truly a joy to drive. Although they are a little expensive the price really hasn't changed much in the last 15 years. You get what you pay for. If you want a quality built car that drives like a dream I highly recommend this car.
