I Have Found The Ford Mondeo St200 Estate To Be On
I have found the Ford Mondeo ST200 Estate to be one of the best cars I have ever owned, and I have had a few.
This is the second one I have had and can say without reservation that for value for money this is a car that is hard to beat.
Prices range from around the sub £1000 mark for one requiring attention to £2000 +.
At the cheaper end of the scale you can expect a high mileage example that will usually need new lower arms, track rod ends, replacement bushes and a replacement wheel bearing or two, with a partial or conveniently lost service history and the usual age related car park dings, stone chips and worn interior.
At the other end of the price range things are usually better offering a well cared for recently serviced and polished example that has been a pride and joy for the previous owner. But don't get caught out by dealers offering a future classic for silly money as it pays to shop around.
The interior is well spec'd and despite the age of this particular model range, is still quite current with Recaro leather interior (half on some full on others) electrically adjustable drivers seat (height only), electric windows all round, climate control, 6 CD Changer under passengers seat with double din head unit and a heated windscreen, brilliant during the winter months and which at the press of a button gives a clear defrosted screen within five minutes.
Driving controls are easy to hand and full use of the CD Radio can be had from the steering column mounted stalk controller.
I have found fuel economy to be reasonable with real world figures of 25mpg around town and 39mpg on a run (motorway journey) which combined with the performance of the ST200 I find quite acceptable.
Being the estate variant the load area is huge, I have taken the family (my wife and two small children) on camping trips to the Lake District with everything required for a week away and have no complaints everything was swallowed up with ease by the boot.
Performance wise this is one of those cars that is happy to be driven lazily about the town or given the beans inducing an induction roar and throaty exhaust note and some quite license threatening speeds.
The engine in this car is a tuned 2.5 litre V6 with a special vehicle technologies throttle body mated to an extrude honed inlet manifold which which new boasted 204BHP. At low speeds just one bank is used to preserve fuel economy however upon generous use of the loud pedal the secondary bank comes into life inducing that lovely exhaust note.
I would expect a well cared for full service history example to be closer to this 204 BHP figure than a neglected one.
Handling is superb provided the suspension has been looked after and is reassuringly solid on bumpy back roads. On the motorway the ST200 glides along effortlessly the V6 purring quietly and smoothly under the bonnet propelling you to your destination.
Maintenance costs can be high if you use the main dealer, however new genuine original parts can be sourced easily on the internet and can be fitted yourself if you have an basic understanding of mechanics and a decent tool set. Essentially buy the best you can afford as cheapest is not always so in the log run, go for a car with a full service history with receipts to prove and enjoy.

I Have Owned My 200 For 3yrs Now And Paid £2
i have owned my 200 for 3yrs now and paid £2000 for it, and it still puts a smile on my face... mine is garaged most of the year and only does around 1000 miles a year,, its 10 yr old now with 89K on the clock, and it still feels solid.. a very balanced car through the bends, ive got koni 40mm springs on mine, wich made a great improvement and certainly felt a big difference over standard.. the 200 has really nice power when you put your foot down and the sound of the V6 with a blueflame exhaust always puts a smile on my face.. no problems with my 200 at all, just love it.. yeah its not the fastest car on the roads but what 10yr old car is ??? its a really nice drive, smooth and comfy with nice power.. abit thirsty if you have a heavy foot especially with fuel prices these days... brakes are not the best, but i changed my disc's to grooved and mintex pads and it stops much better than standard...overall a great car in my opinion...

Previously Had A 2.0 Glx Before The St24, On Any M
Previously had a 2.0 GLX before the ST24, on any mondeo that you want performance from you need to upgrade the brakes. They just aint good enough if ya gonna do any kind of speed, especially if you dont have rear discs which I know all ST24 & 200's do.
Other than that, mine's given me no problem except for the flickering headlights which is an easy fix when you know how and the IMRC unit failing. Easily corrected by restarting the car however to fix you need to strip the plenom chamber right down to the intake section in between the heads and clean all the ports out and change the IMRC unit itself. Well worth doing!
The car is great, everyone that gets in it loves it and I prefer it over my Vectra V6 any day... as someone previously said, its a drivers car and also, its been lowered which is a must for looks!! Doesnt compromise tooo much on the comfort!
hey :) you mentioned the flickering lights! i had a new alternator fitted and ever since all lights inside and out are flickering, if you press the accelerator a lilttle then the flickering wll stop. i have also noticed that sometimes when stood at the traffic lights if you press the footbrake then the lights will flicker less. its been like this for about 8 months now. you say its an easy fix when you know how. how do you do it ?
