Transit T280 Swn
I've owned my t 280 for a couple of years now and it is a reliable little workhorse the tddi engine runs well and spares are easy enough to come by a little prone to rust especially the arches and sills but all round a trustworthy van if looked after properly

Reliable, Excellent Service
i hear people slate transit vans, but i can only say after owning and driving them for 20 odd years, i,ve found them brilliant. very few problems and very small ones, none kept me from driving them to work, running repair costs are nothing. everything is available and cheap. bought 2nd hand 2-4 years old kept for 6-10 years without problems.
i will say this , i don,t do big miles and sell them before they have 150,000 on the clock.
i carry 500kgs plus everywhere i go with all the tools, sometimes tow heavy trailer overloaded, never had a clutch. my 12 year old van drives like new although does not look it, never had a clutch go or major problem in over 20 years. what does that tell you ? maybe its the driver ! or they don,t like high miles !
can highly recommend the transit, thanks steve.
AGREE , GREAT VANS BUT THE RUST PROBLEM IS OFF PUTTING IF YOU USE THE VAN AS AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE COMPANY ESP WHITE.
HOPE THE NEW TRANSIT IS GALVANISED THEN I MAY TRADE MY VIVARO IN FOR ONE NEXT TIME.

56 Plate Ford Transit T260 Tdci
I previously had a Peugeot expert (non turbo) which was a bit small and underpowered, but mechanically bullet proof, and ran hassle free for 5 years. I decided to get a bigger van, and because transits are so abundant, I never questioned whether they were any good........ massive mistake.
I look on forums now, and they truly are dreadful vehicles with massive and known design faults. The stories about my van are too numerous, so I'll just give you the results to my pocket....
In just under 3 years; New Gearbox, new discs (and of course pads) all round, both engine temp warning sensors replaced, new starter motor, 2 new fuel sender pumps. I reckon £2-2K. If you're a lottery winner, this is the van for you, as you'll always be shelling out.
I had the AA check the vehicle prior to purchase, it was clean as a whistle with 46k and FSH. All of the faults developed following the clean bill of health. The heat sensors and fuel pump are known problems.
The build quality is poor, silicone seals on major joints, poor paint work resulting in ealy sill rust. All in all the worst, and most expensive van I have ever owned, I will never have another Ford, or deal with any Ford dealerships.
Do yourself a favour, read the 'Which Forums' and just buy something else..

My Ford Transit 280 Swb 100bhp Has A Rusty Interio
My Ford Transit 280 SWB 100bhp has a rusty interior roof. The Van is not even 3 years old. I spoke to Ford customer helpline but more like unhelpfull line. Dispite the van not being over 3 years old they were not interested as I had bought it second hand. Also it had not been serviced for a year and 4 months? The rust inside the roof has been caused by no paint being sprayed on the panel it is quite a large area and if not sorted will rust out the roof from the inside!!
Ford customer service was not interested though so beware they dont care about there new Transits rusting it is just tough.
Beware if your servicing is not correct as you will get a second hand van with a uselees warranty even if it is a manufacturing defect such as the paint not bieng sprayed!
Take off and top speed is excellent, can easily stall though at low speed.
The engine is shoe horned in and looks a nightmare if anything goes wrong. It has a big tank so more milage between fill ups. Good light power steering and comfy driving position. Loads of room in the back and good to stand up with semi high roof.
Doors are a bit tinny sounding, not sure if there is much metal in them. The Seals around the doors and the frame are gone in mine should not be too much expense.
Always had a transit. This may be the last one.
Let themselves and me down
HAD THIS PROBLEM ON MINE, THE JOINT ALONG THE ROOF NEAR THE REAR DOORS RUSTED THROUGH AND ALLOWED WATER INTO THE LOAD BAY...GOT RID AND BOUGHT A VIVARO, NO RUST NO PROBLEMS YET 3 YRS OWNED SO FAR.
HOPE THE NEW TRANSIT IS GALVANISED, IF IT IS I WILL DEFINATELY BUY ONE NEXT TIME.
Totaly agree with you, i have found there product and customer care to be .......well....crap! Even though my transit is the 300swb on an X it looks poorly finished on the inside roof area and the paint work on the outside is so thin we get rust marks making us constantly T-cut. Its done 50k and has had a new gearbox, turbo, starter motor and alternator, wich we have been forced to fit ourselves. When contacting our local Ford dealer and explaining the van is needed and relied upon to run our business we are presented with either a 3-4 week waiting time for parts (at ridiculus prices)or a two week waiting period for them to fit it in to there workshops?! Having had many transits to be honest the newer they are the worse they get...come on Ford pull yer fingers out.
Q&A
Does anyone know if the transit 280 swb 2002 1998cc engine is belt or chain driven? Thanks for your help.
