Perfect

I acquired these second-hand Studio 10 speakers a few weeks ago. Initially unfamiliar with them, I did some online research and discovered positive reviews, especially regarding their bass performance. I have found them to be exceptional regardless of the genre I'm playing. Paired with two vintage Bang and Olufsen units via a splitter, I have a single set of speakers but with two amplifiers. These speakers, hands down, are the best I've ever owned.

Great Speakers For The Price Range!

I bought these speakers perhaps a little over 20 years ago from richer sounds (for around £150) along with a Marantz pm 7001 amp. These speakers have been more or less in use every day for many hours each day and for a fair amount of that time at high volume. Over the years my musical tastes have varied and expanded from hip hop, RnB and rock music at a younger age then moving on to trance, garage, drum and bass, blues, country, jazz, metal... well just about everything, these speaker just preformed, and very well with very present and punchy focused bass. The treble I found to be upfront, bright and focused (borderline shrill) but not too fatiguing and the midrange perhaps a little flat but not boring. After moving home a few years back and loosing my "man cave" the speakers are no longer in the house but I couldn't quite sell them so they are in the garage/gym.

I had owned many other speakers over the years and currently have the monitor audio gold 300 as my main speakers, and yeah these are better in almost every way but they also cost 40 x the price. Even then the TDL's have better bass extension possibly even response, they just lack refinement. For the price I paid these have been one of my best purchases and are the only ones I have not resold.

They are a little bulky and lack the build quality / refinement of even average modern speakers, and although I liked the look when I was 10 back in the early 2000s, I'm not as keen now (although there's much worse).

I would just say that as with any speaker, AMP selection is vital. I did not find a better paring than the original Marantz. The Marantz 6010 Ki lacked the same presence, while the 8002 seemed to overpower / distort the speaker, the Peachtree nova was far too bright, and many others, technics, Yamaha, MI, NAD just didn't complement the speakers quite as well.

I am enjoying the TDL Studio 10 so much! I have 3 pairs :-) One for parts, one for tests and one vanilla. Did you know that the massive enclosures come factory empty?!!! There is no filling in them at all. I just ordered acoustic foam to bring these 'sleepers' to a new level. Note: these perform best when placed about 3.5 to 4 meters apart.

Great Sounding Speakers.

I bought these studio 10 speakers second hand a few weeks back.I had read a little about them on line as i had not heard of them at that time.I like good bass sounds from speakers and the TDL speakers had good positive writeups concerning the bass sounds.I,ve found them to be brilliant no matter what i,m playing.I use them with two vintage Bang and Olufson units going through a splitter unit so i only have one set of speakers but two amps. The speakers are without doubt the best i,ve had.

Astounding For The Money!!

Ive had my TDL studio 10's since roughly 2002 running on a Technics SU-A707 amp. Ive used them at extremely high volumes and the sound has always remained clean and crisp. Even compared to more expensive speakers they can hold their ground. Bought for £200, they are definitely a good 14 year investment which is still going strong on a day to day basis. They also still manage to look gorgeous compared to new speakers for more money!

Extra Clean Bass

Very good value. Requiring a really good amp to complement them. Ie Cambridge or marantz. Beautifully made too For the money they're hard to beat I reckon. Enjoy....

Best Value Ever!

A couple of years ago I bought a pair of Harbeths from an aquaintance. I knew he was very proud of his Harbeths so I asked what he had replaced them with. He showed me a pair of Studio 10's of which I knew nothing, although I was familiar with TDL. I found the Harbeths pleasant enough but nothing special really. I was astonished to learn that he had replaced £1100 speakers with ones you could buy for less than £100 on ebay! I was intrigued, and ended up getting a pair for well under £100 in near perfect condition. I have seen people rubbishing these speakers on some forums.

Certainly they are not the last word in constructional quality, but they are solidly built and look very smart. an internal examination reveals drivers with large magnet assemblies and a high quality crossover.

I have been trying for years to find a pair of speakers that sound right - at any price. These Studio 10's fill the bill! They are completely unboxy with low colouration and excellent detail without any "nasties". Huge and natural sound stage with excellent rendition of orchestral timbres. They have the ability to make noisy music easy to listen to without any loss of excitement.Percussion is perhaps not quite as crisp and forward as some but is still very good. The bass is huge and digs up deep notes like no other. True - you need to be careful with positioning, but you can always control the bass if necessary by plugging the ports with some sort of resistive wadding. I use long haired wool.

You can pick up these for a song and never wish for a better speaker!

good review and i echo your final words. i have owned a pair of these for many years and have never looked back. the positioning of these speakers is important as is the case with so many speakers. i have auditioned many different speakers, many far more expensive than these which i bought new for £200. i believe they were originally priced at £400. i can,t find any others so far that would tempt me to part with my tdls. so enjoy your speakers, you have certainly got yourself a bargain. well done

Big Size But Average Sound Quality Compared To Oth

Big size but average sound quality compared to other speakers at this price.

The bass is not deep, the quality of the sound is not remarkable. What grabs you though and is the best part of these speakers for me is the stability in the sound coming from the huge size of the speaker which makes the sound very soothing particularly for classical music, but for rock and pop, much better elsewhere.

I bought a pair of these from Richer Sounds in Nottingham about 6 years ago. I bought them mainly because of their style and price. They cost me £110 back then.

I agree with Wolfburgman on bass reproduction. I have not bi-wired these and I'm driving them with a pretty old Technics amp. The bass is fantastic. If you're getting poor sound, I suggest you have an amplification problem, connection problem, or are listening to these in something like a meadow or very very VERY large room. On hearing how they handled some of my more "challenging" music, a music-loving friend of mine described them as the "mother" of all speakers. Offered me £500 for em! They are still with me! I'm by no means a connoisseur but the overall sound quality in my opinion is remarkable. Constantly in use, and never miss a beat, never any faults just beautiful sound. An absolute bargain. Out of curiosity (and how i happened upon this page) I am looking for another pair to buy in stand-by. Sod's law has been in full swing for me lately and i'm a bit supersticious. If these ever go wrong, I don't know how I will cope! Yes there are other speakers out there, but alas not for a sensible price. If anyone reads this, you should get a pair. Provided they havent been abused and look in reasonable shape Im sure you will get many years of enjoyment from them.

wolfburgman

wondering what sort of set-up you are using with your speakers as i certainly have found no problem with the excellent bass response these speakers produce. i have found on occasion these kicking out so much bass that i could feel the effects through the back of my couch at the opposite side of my living room approxiamately 12 feet away!!
