Recently pulled from the '80s obscurity pile, the post-punk act the Prime Movers (www.primemoversmusic.com) are better known for their latter incarnation, Dread Zeppelin. Yes, years before founding Dread Zeppelin, Gary Putman and Severs Ramsey were producing gloomy, distinctly British rock with the Prime Movers.
Totally unknown in America, the Prime Movers were signed to Island Records, and they were even featured in the Michael Mann film "Manhunter." Birdcage Records decided to reissue their 1984 LP "Museum" on CD, and it's a fascinating trip into the past.
Eschewing bubblegum pop hooks, the Prime Movers instead concentrated on a stylish post-punk sound that captured the indie aesthetic of the period. Guitars glow in the dark, crawling with reptilian grooves a la Shriekback. For fans of the genre, this is must-buy material.
The five bonus tracks are generous and especially choice. The Prime Movers were even better live. The concert cut of "In Touch With You" gives their claustrophobic riffs more room to breathe, and the drums bang with increased passion. Highly recommended.
