“Flashdance Grand tier”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 18/02/2018

Ye Gods. Its steep. Need nerves of steel and alcohol or tranquillisers. Small print on ticket not noticeable which referenced limited leg room. No foot room for husband. Size 12 feet. No bottom room for me. Nothing about size of seat. Cannot see if activity on stage is raised as in elevated sets/stairs but nothing about restricted view on booking or tickets. Feel misled. Be aware when booking, ask the right questions. But dont let it put you off as performance of flash dance was Fab.

We booked seats in the Grand Tier for the Sound of Music, having called TicketMasters and asked for the best seats available. There was no mention of limited legroom at the time of booking though I accept that when I printed the electronic tickets it did say so on them.

I find it incredible that a theatre like this can exist in a modern era. It may be grand and ornate but the seats were so small and the legroom so limited that I actually opted to skip the second half of the performance as I could bear the discomfort no longer.

I took my elderly mother to see the show and she was terrified by the steepness and height of the steps, I am stunned that they have a safety certificate as it is totally unsuitable for the elderly or less able bodied.

Frankly the place needs gutting and refurbishing to modern standards, it is an insult to the public that they have seats so tightly crammed together that the discomfort outweighs and pleasure obtained from the performance

P.S.
I gave this theatre one star out of 5 only because no stars was not an allowable option. he show by the way was excellent.

The seating here is very uncomfortable (circle). I would go to another theatre if there is a choice because of this. Also looks a bit grubby inside.

The Palace Theatre is a reasonable venue which gets a range of stuff from pantos at Christmas to big name musicals to gigs. I've been inside to see Miss Saigon and also to see the Eels play. It's an old theatre with elaborate decor but looks a bit like it's falling apart.

The acoustics are pretty good, but the seats are horrible and uncomfortable and too close together. When I saw Miss Saigon I could only see half the stage owing to the angle and the fact that the flat floor downstairs meant that someone as tall/taller than me sat in front of me completely obscured half my view. The other members of my party had the same problem. I suspect this is a flaw of many old theatres. My other half has very long legs and was incredibly uncomfortable as his knees were jammed against the seat in front.

Overall, as far as acoustics and stage size and ability to put on a good show, this is a decent venue, but it's not the most comfortable one I've been to.
