Great Value For Money!

I'm living here now and i'd recommend it for anyone who's looking for accommodation near to the city, the bus route goes right into Manchester and is really frequent. You also get a lot for your money with the en-suite rooms and on site parking. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't wi-fi but they're getting it for next year which should be good.

Avoid At All Costs!!!

MSV SOUTH is the worst accommodation you could possibly consider. A sweeping remark you say? Absolutely not.

From requesting a refurbished flat, I was told at the beginning of year I had the "only room left" and was placed in unrefurbished. Being cheaper, I agreed and moved in. How interesting it was to discover that every single other person I met was told the same and there were miraculously free rooms in my friends flats in the refurbished side.

-the hob never worked and we were told it was too "expensive" to repair. One lighter was supplied to a flat of 4for every month upon our request with a 2 week wait: ureasonable, and I singed my fingers on numerous occassions because of this.

-the contract included a TV. We were given a chunky 20th century television with 4 channels that didnt work. A missing remote. Again, never replaced.

-general paint peeling, tiles missing from the bathroom, dirty bathroom when moved in, broken study chair, skirtingboard missing from kitchen- all of which was far too much to write on the inventory at the beginning of the year, yet we have had threats to charges.

-within a week of living there the kettle and microwave and toaster didn't work. The oven had clearly never been cleaned.

-no noise allowed and a maximum of 6 people in the flat at any one time

-everywhere constantly stinks of weed

-sofa's already damaged when moved in with no cushions- like sitting on a bed frame

-the office people- incredibly rude and unhelpful, not understanding of any of the above from the first moving in day we had issues.

Surely this means the accomodation is fairly quiet? Perhaps, compared to the likes of Cambridge Halls, however you will certainly be woken to the siren of a police car on average every hour blasting through Rusholme and Moss Side.

Overall an absolute joke. It is no coincidence most of the reviews on here are bad, so bare in mind! You wouldnt book a holiday from the rubbish reviews on trip advisor so don't pay for a year here!!!

Complete Joke

Firstly one of the main reasons coming to manchester was the massively hyped nightlife which is well known as well as university. However, to mine and I can speak for everybody else who i know here was a huge disappointment due to the fact that for some reason we were barely aloud to play music in our kitchen let alone barely talk! The security bother you constantly whilst they are on and take it upon themselves to come into my flat for no reason. Personally I think this is invasion of privacy. I would stay well well clear of MSV if you actually want to have a social life and meet people who aren't hermits most of the time.

Couldn't Have Been Worse.

On arrival, MSV south seems very appealing that is if you are in a refurbished flat. If you are in an non-refurbished then you have drawn the shortest straw possible.

I was lucky enough to have a refurbished flat yet that's about the only positive I can think of. My room was a corner room which was poorly designed, there were no bedside plug sockets as well as a desk which was small even for dwarfs. If you were in a rush in the morning you'd better be prepared for a cold shower, I had to get in a routine of getting up putting my shower on cleaning my teeth and going to the toilet whilst I waited for the shower to heat up.

Aside from the poor rooms, the social side is virtually non-existent. If you wanted to have a few friends round for drinks then this place is definitely where to invite them. On several occasions we were told to be quiet and turn the music off before 11 by the jobs worth of a security guard who is by far the most nosey person I have ever met. You might not be allowed to listen to music but you can smoke as much weed as you want, the place constantly smells of it, I wouldn't be surprised if people got high purely from the second hand smoking.

If you want to be near to university you're in the wrong place. It's located on curry mile around a 20-30 minute walk to the universities or alternatively you could get a bus and waste more money.

Money is another problem, the tiniest little claim they can make against you they will however we were promised working TV's however they only started working around January and no compensation was received.

To conclude, if you have no social life, like weed, like nosey security and being ripped off then MSV South is the place for you!

Stay Well Clear!

With Manchester having quite a big nightlife scene you would think coming to these halls full of students would be ideal if I planned on having a good time. I was wrong. Ever heard of pre drinks? Well in MSV South, this does not exist as you are only aloud 6 people in a room at one time according to the pesturing night porter who takes his job way too seriously who kicks everybody out if there is too many people having quiet drinks before going out. If you don't listen to these rules that he has quite clearly made up himself, he will turn off the electric and lights for the flat to ensure everybody leaves the flat. This is the main reason as to why I hate MSV South, the list does go on but I will only cover them briefly:

The hobs for our cooker never worked from day 1, we had to use a lighter throughout the year to start the them

The "cleaner" does not clean any part of the accomodation, a few times I've caught her on FaceTime rather than working

The walls are damp so tiles are coming off the wall

The place smells of weed 24/7

9/10 you will be woke up in the morning by a police cars sirens driving towards moss side

If your kitchen is slightly dirty you are asked to clean or pay a £200 fine to get somebody to clean it - must be Mary Poppins for £200 haha.

I would not recommend this accomodation to anybody who enjoys going out and having a good time

Cracking Place

As with most things you get out of it what you put in, people have had issues with things being quiet but then you are in a place with 300 plus other people so finding a social side of things isn't a problem for those with a mind to find it, or conversely it is a great place to sit and actually work for second years or those who are serious about study.

The rooms are solidly built with thick walls and double glazing they are well sized (for halls of residence) and equiped with plenty of sockets and so forth.

Everything is close by and most students with travel to the shops that are on the doorstep for food shops and the two main unis are 15 mins away on foot so you can hardly argue there about location.

Pricing is the best by far of all the halls I have seen with comparable ones being roughly £30 a week more if uni owned thanks to that very handy bathroom all to yourself no matter the room package you go for.

Most of the reviews seem to have been placed before the new managers came into play and things have perked up drastically with dedicated office staff and full time on site maintenence and cleaning throughout the week who have invested huge sums of money and time recently in adressing many of the issues that people seemed to have problems with.

The attitude of the staff is relaxed and friendly and whilst if you have a problem with anything they are happy to help or if you have speakers going full blast at 3am they will come and say turn it down respect the fact that tennants there are adults and treat them as such with no meddling and the assumption that as a student you are bound to have ruined the room or something similarly terrible.

There is a communal space with free telly and sofas provided in every flat that often served as a space to have friends round for a couple of drinks or just watch the rugby as a flat rather than the pricy option of a trip to the pub too!

Having lived here for a year it is easily the best halls I have seen and it was not just the £400 saved with a rebooking package that drew me to stay again.

Fantastic Place To Live

Before I moved in to MSV South I read a lot of bad reviews about the place, but they are most definitely not representative of my experience living there.

First of all, the flats themselves are great value for money, and one of the cheapest in Manchester. The En Suite Bathroom was a real selling point for me as I couldn't stand the thought of sharing a bathroom with a bunch of random people i'd never met.

Since I moved in on my own, the staff tried to put me into a flat with people they thought i'd get on well with. During my two year stay I had 5 different flatmates who were all great to live with and very friendly.

One of my favorite aspects about living here was that you get to know all the members of staff, rather than them just being nameless faces you see walking around the site. It was a real pleasure staying with them, and I would recommend MSV South to anyone.

Not A Great Place To Live

Whilst the rooms and flats at MSV South are more than adequate what disappointed me most about living there last year was how poor an environment it was socially. Over the year I felt like I spent most of my time walking or getting the bus further down Oxford Road to where most of my friends resided in the first year. Even if university halls are completely full or not for you the MSV building on Lower Chatham St which was in a ideal location for students attending MMU and any students wanting to have central Manchester on their doorstep. The place could definitely benefit from having some communal areas in the complex as it would perhaps make it a much more pleasant place to live...

Personally, I was very glad to move out of MSV South. If you are a prospective student looking for halls, wanting to embrace the student lifestyle and see all the great things that Manchester has to offer I would not recommend living in this place.

Really Enjoyed Living Here

Before moving into MSV south I saw some of the online reviews and have to admit that they did worry me. However, a friend of mine had lived here for 2 years in the past and was happy, so I figured it couldn't be too bad for her to have returned.

I moved in on my own, but it is also possible to move in with friends. I was able to request to be in a flat with other girls but knew nothing about them. The girls that I was put with for each of my 3 contract lengths that I have been here have been great, and the office staff even chose people to put me with who they knew that I would get on with for my final contract. Some of my flatmates have become really good friends.

There have been small issues whilst I have been living here such as late night parties and appliances not working properly but when I have spoken to the office staff about these issues they have always been sorted out. The office staff have been so kind whilst I've been here, always willing to see how they can help or to just have a bit of a chat. The maintenance team are great too, really friendly and efficient.

I'm coming to the end of my contract at MSV south now after 2 years and I can honestly say I will miss the place. Things aren't always perfect, sometimes it is noisy when I'm trying to do work or get an early night, but it's student halls and I bet that anywhere would be the same. The prices here are some of the cheapest halls in Manchester even though they are en-suite, and it's always nice to have your own bathroom! I regularly recommend MSV south to students at my uni, it's located in a brilliant place for MMUs Elizabeth Gaskell campus but is also really close to the other campuses and the bus stop is just outside for going to and from town. I really would recommend living here.

Actually Pretty Good

I read bad things online just before moving into the accommodation which was a negative start to the year. However it wasn't long before I started to love this place. I'm so glad I decided to live here. Other students moan about their halls to me, how dirty the boys are in the shared toilets, how the security man threw everyone out of their party etc. We'll we have en suites and the security man is pretty cool...

It just depends what kind of halls you are looking for, MSV was perfect for me, the first night I arrived I was invited to a party, as was everyone else in the 4 blocks beside me and that was it, I had about 30 new friends.

You get a lot of freedom unlike other halls and the car park is perfect for playing volleyball. Its a great location, half way between Fallowfield and the city center, no complaints. Well, not too many.
