I required assistance recovering personal files and pictures from a external hard drive. The drive failed one evening while I was working. It was a 10 year old 200 gb WD drive. The cause was mechanical and after talking to several local shops, I contacted We Recover Data. Their knowledge of the failure, quoted repair cost and repair time were superior to others. Their policy is money first, data later. After getting hold on your money, they become very unresponsive, ignoring your questions and requests.

I had an HDD, which was healthy, except two files with bad sectors among almost one million. Everything else was absolutely readable. I needed just one of these two files, roughly 400MB large. In the filed case I specified exactly (their case form allows it) what file I need to be restored.

After *four* weeks I received an e-mail saying that they “restored” all data on my HDD. Remember that all files except two were readable and didn't need “restoration”? My questions of why the heck do I have to pay for the extra work I didn't need were ignored or answered “it's our standard procedure”. No technical reason was given. Well, it's a bad procedure then. The rhetorical question still lingers: why do I have to pay for a procedure that wastes my money and time?

And guess what: that single file I needed wasn't fully restored, the data inside was corrupted. However, they took my money and didn't suggest any money back. I paid for nothing a considerable amount of money.
