Worst Boilers Ever Made. Avoid!

They have plastic components inside which within a few years start to break because of the heat.

They maybe cheaper but are rubbish.

Really Good Medium Budget Boiler

My heating engineer recommended a Glow Worm Ultracom 30CXI Boiler in 2009 when our inherited boiler was unrepairable. I don't understand all the bad reviews because in all this time it hasn't broken down once. I think it really does depend on who installs it but why spend a lot of money an expensive boiler like a Worcester when you can get something really reliable for a much lower cost. It does pay to make sure you get it installed by a really good heating engineer who knows the best way to fit it.

Terrible Reliability

Installed new in 2014 with 5 year included warranty. I must have called the Valiant\Glow Worm engineers out under warranty 6-7 times in the first 4 years of it's life.. They ask for a £90 deposit if it's not the boiler.. it's always been the boiler !

F9 errors then dead display then leaking issue.. at one point most of the boiler was replaced as they could not find the fault... 11 months on more F9 errors. sensors and electronics to blame.

After the 5 years are up... I'm going to throw money at the best Worcester Bosh I can afford.. vote with your feet and steer clear people !!

Probably The Worst Boilers Ever Made

Fitted 9 of these a few years ago in 9 rented flats with nothing but trouble ever since. Cost me about £600 per year to keep em going.

Avoid......... Don't just avoid, run like the wind

Unreliable Electronics

Some of the electronics that were or still are used on these boilers are truly shocking imho the Pcb's are a Symsi make or brand . Dire electronics

I an aware of numerous installers & service engineers who have come to grief by merely switching the power to the boiler off via its isolation switch/fuse spur.

Many of installers will now warn customers that the pcb can be damaged by electrical isolation prior to working on some Gloworm models in order to safe guard themselves

Terrible electronics , total disgrace, Glowoerm are well aware of the issues

Incidentally Gloworm are owned by Vaillant

(reg gas installer no connection to any boiler manu)

Awful,terrible,junk,unreliable,rubbish, A Waste Of Plastic

Had 9 of these put in 9 apartments 8yrs ago. Without doubt the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. They are still wasting my money even now because they cost on average £150-£200 per year per boiler to keep going (I'm a landlord). Please avoid these boilers like the plague..........you have been warned

Well Made Reliable.

I have installed over fifty cxi boilers and I do not have 1 dissatisfied customer out of all the installations, the cxi is made by vailant in the vailant factory comes with a 5 year warranty (7 years with the 35kw )options to purchase extended warranties available obviously the manufacturers are very confident with regard to the reliability of this product.Should there be a warranty issue a vailant technician attends.

With regard to performance its up there with all the others.

Just Don't Do It

Had a brand new 30CXI fitted eight years ago and it was the worst decision I ever made. I was looking at the Worcester equivalent and chose this cheaper one instead. Just after a year some little plastic block went leaking, replaced with one now made of copper, this was the first warning that the boiler was made on the cheap. Then the heat exchanger blew a leak, by this time I got on British gas call out scheme. After a year paying Gas board £15 a month I thought I wouldn't need them with such a new recognised boiler so I thought I'd save myself some cash and opted off the scheme, after a month another leak and damaged PCB so another £99 call out and back on the scheme at £9.99 a month. Two weeks the boiler sprang a massive leak all over my washer dryer and took that out of service, turns out the Gas man didn't quite put the last o ring in properly and it blew.

Gas board were very good and sent someone out to test the washer who condemned it. Anyway fourteen months on and it just sprung another leak from the plastic manifold, so I'm waiting for the gas man to get the part and fit it. I'm sure it's the same manifold that went last time though, I've never owned something so unreliable.

Unreliable Electronics

Have had nothing but trouble with this boiler. Expansion tank failed early in its life. Then the main PCB failed and the initial new replacement board would not work. Finally got it to work with a repaired PCB!

When working it is fine but its unreliability and poor quality of its electronic components means this boiler should be avoided.

Q&A

Julie.O

Could you tell me why even when the heating is off the boiler fires up periodically?

SDDH

I have the Glow worm Ultracom cxi boiler for about 8 years fitted into the loft of my bungalow. Since the installation it has had problems with leaking, pressure and noise. A recent visit from a plumber said that I need to replace it, stating it would be cheaper getting the same make as it would be a case of fitting over the old.

I am a little apprehensive due to the problems I have incurred. I would like to ask what people think of the Ultracom cxi, would there be great difficulty in fitting another make?

Your answers are much appreciated, thank you.
