I've Had My Second Hand 1995 3 Cylinder Hijet For

I've had my second hand 1995 3 cylinder hijet for 6 years, affectionately called grandads noddy van as the grandkids love it, although rear seats are nearly always folded up as I use cargo area for carrying work gear, never had over heating problem (dam should not have said that )am really sad they are being discontinued. I am thinking of up dating to a 1.3 with power steering and central locking, (and yes I do acknowledge other hijet users).

I Took Out The Seats And Put In Sink & Two Ring Ho

I took out the seats and put in sink & two ring hob, built some wooden boxes and covered with foam....... and hey presto a lovely mini camper. Great for fishing weekends and all round carrying large loads. Sadly Diahatsu & Suzuki are discontinuing.

These great vans with only Piaggio left. Mine is 998cc. I have had the 1300 but did not like it. Cost of road tax ins. and petrol not worth it. As for overheating make sure to vent radiator often. I fitted a fan bypass switch to monitor heat in summertime.

I love these little vans and wouldnt mind paying extra for more comfort. Cheap motoring for everday use.

We Have Had The 'bus' As We Call It For 3 Years -

We have had the 'BUS' as we call it for 3 years - my daughter uses it to ferry her children to school and I use it to carry my Vespa scooter to rallies - it is also used as a camper and is much better than a tent. It did overheat on us once when the head casket blow but since then it has been OK - Get one and give it a go you will have fun.

This Is The Very First Car I Ever Bought. If You

This is the very first car I ever bought. If you are a learner driver and/or need 6-7 seats then this is a perfect ideal car. It is only 993cc engine (the newer ones are 1.3l) so great for road tax. The insurance on them are also lower. They are extremely economical on petrol. To fill the tank from empty costs about £20. When I went on my holiday I drove about 1000 miles and I only needed to put about £100 in. It is easy to drive and parking is very easy as it has no bonnet and the boot is square. It looks small but it is quite spacious inside. If you are on a low income they are cheap(ish) to buy, and cheap to run. It is a very reliable nippy runabout.

There aren't many bad points apart from it doesn't look very appealing. It finds going up hills a bit of a struggle. It also has an over heating problem if it travels too far as it does have a small engine. Also because it has lever suspension you feel all the bumps in the road so makes speed humps sometimes an uncomfortable ride. To drive over the speed humps without flying out of your seat it is advisable to go over them at about 5mph. The only other problem I have found is because it is a Japanese car to get parts for it can be sometimes a bit of a wait.

Oh the other problem I found is when I got my insurance and breakdown cover they didn't know what it was or where to look for it as questioned whether I had given them the correct infomation. They thought it was a van rather than an mpv which it REALLY is.

Overall though I love my little Diahatsu Hijet(Newt) and I would give it a 10/10 but I won't cause there is always room for improvement.

I have just brought a Hi jet 1300 EFi, it's a great little van, I just need to get used to the tin can feel!! My dash board light doesn't work so you can't see the speedo at night :-O Anyone know if this is a fuse problem or what? Also the fuel light comes on every time you touch the brake, not sure why, Anyway aside from that my wallet will be much happier after running a 3 litre engine.

You'll know about it if you get in a crash! Mine feels as flimsy as a box, but that's what's fun strangely. Remember, you're buying a cheap Daihatsu, not a top of the range Volvo or BMW with side impact bars! But I feel safe enough in there, the truth is that if I was the passenger and our lass was driving, that's when i'd be thinking about side impact bars just for extra safety.

I'm thinking about getting a Hijet. Only thing I'm a bit worried about is that it has no bonnet, and so I'm wondering how safe are the two front drivers? Anyone know about safety features on Hijets post-1995? What about side impact bars etc? Looks like a very light (maybe weak) vehicle - please shed some light!

I bought a hijet 1.3 efi last week. Having read the comments I am glad I did. I use it mainly for my short distance to work (2.5 miles) and windsurfing gear its great and so versatile. Put a decent cd player and a clock although it does not have the same refinements as the Toyota Townace I was driving before, its a hell of a lot more fun and alot cheaper to run!!!. It has dual fuel and I tend to run it on lpg and laugh my head off every time I refill at £4.00 a time. Does anyone know roughly what MPG I should expect from either the LPG or U/L petrol? Like all you other nutters I shall have to come up with a name for her!!

Had mine since nov 2004, needed new prop shaft within a week but hijet was second hand does eighty if your brave worth it just to see the annoyance of bmw drivers you overtake. Just had it broken into locks not brill only needs a screwdriver. All said and done its a nice motor but not good for impressing the girls.
