what a pathetic supplier roadangel is; they do not return phone calls and cannot be bothered to notify you of subscription expiry, and then want to sell you a different model..........WHAT A CROCK

I wanted to cancel my DD with Road Angel after they increased my monthly cost, to cancel I had to pay almost an entire years worth of subscription. They are rotten to the core, don't use them.

Sent my Road Angel back for repair last month as the charging connection became detached from the PCB. 2weeks later having not heard from them I rang to find out current status, only to be advised they couldn't repair it and I've have to buy a new one. Crazy as if I was willing to I could have stripped the device and resoldered the connector back onto the PCB. Despite lots of problems with the Vantage e.g refusing to turn off even after reset, camera alerts for side roads miles off the dual carriageway, alerts every mile etc etc I stupidly bought a GEM only to find a) it wouldn't switch off b) it powered up when plugging the charger in and couldn't be turned off c) no charging light indicator so no way of knowing when it fully charged d) screen is so small you need 10x magnification to read it e) no night time dimming function f) cheap tinny continuous intermittent beep.

On complaining to customer service I eventually received a reply advising the NEW unit required ME to download the latest firmware. After installation the device did switch off but still powered up when plugging the charger in, when powering up the programme sometimes locks and doesn't function including the menu function. Still no charge indicator.

My advice is don't buy Road Angel and if you do take a course in conversing with 6year olds.

Very disappointed in this and will be handing it back in to the supplier this morning.

Having spent 3 days driving around town and a recent long journey too I found that the Gem alerted at every bridge and lay-by that I went under or passed. The constant alerts became so annoying that I started to ignore them. The device is also riddled with incorrect speed limits and alerts for schools that aren't there. It becomes an annoying distraction that you eventually tune out and ignore so there's no point in having it.

The upshot is that if I kept the device I would either ignore it or not even bother to mount it on the dashboard each morning so I'm going to look into a Snooper instead.

It looks and sounds cheap. I drove from Glasgow to Manchester and it gave me a speed camera warning for just about every bridge on the m6, 32 , yes, 32 such warnings. I saw one real camera van and the gem DID NOT DETECT IT!!! After using it for 1 month it stopped working and I got a refund from Amazon. A user can't easily add cameras to the database, which seems to include the locations where a camera has ever been located. For example, m6 near tebay, unit starts giving 30mph warnings, 2 months out of date even though database had been updated.

A truly shocking waste of money, appalling. Avoid , the TomTom does a better job and it's cheaper and better built and lasts more than 4 weeks.

Not what I expected from a Road Angel detector! There are many faults which let this unit down in my opinion:

1. The tone of the alarm is just about the worst I have ever come across, really cheep and tacky sound.

2. It's impossible to add/remove a camera location without using both hands which is obviously of no use at all unless you have a death wish!

3. There is no way of muting the infernal voice warning if you only want the alarm, you can only set male or female voice.

4. The "Sun Visor" protrudes forward of the screen at the centre by 10mm so unless the sun happens to be directly overhead it's useless.

5. The screen will not automatically switch from day to night mode so this has to be done manually which is a pain in the proverbial if you are driving as you have to stop.

6. Although the unit acquires quickly, it tends to give spurious warnings such as cameras on adjacent or nearby roads and I've only ever had one laser warning (although to be fair this may just be because I haven't encountered any others but I wouldn't bank on it).

Sorry to be so negative but it really is rubbish. It does have some positive features, I just can't think what they are off hand.

I have had two vantage units that have died. Its been back three times now and still not working. I think they have a 6 year old in the workshop. Useless customer service, they just try to sell you a new one. they know nothing about customer service. Do not buy any road angel product.

Started off well, the total unit thn went dead after less than 5 hours use. Data base updated ok, work quite well before then, returned it to halfords who offered to get a new one in stock or refund. I opted for the refund as i now have little confidence in it - March 2013 midlands

Do not waste your time and money on the pile of Junk, Gem does not work VERY VERY poor customer service can never get through always waiting on the phone for a long time before you get through to any-one.

The Gem version takes eternity to latch on to the satellites.

Yesterday I took nearly 4 miles to indicate it was in sync.

Pointless, as I was only half mile from home.

In built up areas the laser detector drives you mad with false alerts, to the extent where I rip out the power lead on the dash in frustration

Only one good thing, I bought it from Ebay at £15, if I had paid full price I would not have been at all pleased

Avoid this product.
