They Will Not Refund Your Money Even You Tried To Cancel!!!
I booked a tour from Trek America on July 15th for tour that started on September 17th. unfortunately hurricane Irma swept through my house a week before the trip. therefore I had to cancel the trip. I called them on September 13th to cancel, that when I didn't have power or wifi. they said they won't refund the money. Then I called the insurance company, they told me they needed a cancellation letter from trek america. so i called trek america back to request for cancellation letter. they email me the letter on sep.14th but the wrote cancel date is sep.18th. i wanna report them for taking money from people. even I go through all the hardship with hurricane Irma, they still take money from me. on top of that, they put the wrong cancel date to make it legally to take, and on their website, I can't write review to warn people.
I Would Advise Not Doing This.
If your stuck with a bitchy group then your screwed for the next 3 weeks especially when the tour leader joins in and actually encourages the bitching. It felt like a school playground environment. You can arrange and do this yourself for much cheaper and choose who you want to spend time with. The highlight was the places you go. But you can meet up with other travellers much cheaper.
Not A Real Tour
Our "tour" was more like independent travel, leaving trekkers alone on the trails to fend for themselves. The trek covered the Pacific northwest. We had two tour guides who seemed nice enough but didn't always have the customer in mind and didnt consider safety a priority. For some of the sites, they divided the Trekkers into groups based on available activities (for example, hiking, bicycling). One would think each tour guide would help facilitate an activity, especially given that most customers were venturing into this territory for the first time. However, in practice the tour guides played favorites and both guides only accompanied one sub-group, leaving the other sub-groups on their own. On our trek, some people in the unguided sub-groups were injured and couldn't continue the trek, an outcome that could have been prevented had the guides split up rather than congregate with one sub-group. One of the guides later said this is common: "People get injured on every trek." Well, I can't say I'm surprised.

Wrong Hotel And Wrong City
I booked the SalsaCubana 15 day tour of Cuba [CHC312A1] starting March 18, 2013. 3 days before my departure I received an email from trekamerica telling me the hotel the tour was leaving from had been changed. It was not leaving from the Hotel Ambos Mundos in Old Havana, but from the Occidental Allegro, Autopista Sur Km 11, Varadero, Matanzas, Cuba.
Varadero is 145Km from Havana. So,I spent the first 4 hours of my Cuba trip going to the wrong hotel, trying to find, nonexistent, trip information on the trekamerica website and making a $35 phonecall to the London office. Finally they got me the phone number for the Cuban office and I got to the right hotel. The Havana Occidental Miramar...in HAVANA.
I had expected to come home to an email of apology from your office, and an offer to compensate me for my time and expense, due to your error. Instead,in the last week, I have sent several emails, and have been told I have to wait to hear back from her supervisor.
I am still waiting.

Four Great Treks! Recommended
I'm from England. I have been on four treks. Twice in one year in 2009. In 2010 I lived in NYC for work and despite doing lots of other trips trek was still the best way to travel the US so did my fourth.
What can I say about the trips? As with anything in life signing up to something you don't know about is a risk. How good your trip will be depends on the dynamics of the group and your tour leader. For example my first trip was the best. I had lots of reunions with people and even had a trip romance. The other trips we got on but not as well as my first.
Prices have risen a hell of allot even in four years. The treks are still worth doing!
The experiences and things I saw I will never forget and I am glad I spent all the money I did. I only wish my salary stretched so I could do more. :)

I went on the Cross Country BLT for 21 days, it was AMAZING!!!! i had such a great time, had 12 awesome people from around the world and the funniest, coolest tour guide you could imagine :) the long bus drives could be a bit of a drag, but going across the country, what do you expect??? WOuld do it again in a heart beat. WOuldn't change it for anything. Amazing country, with amazing people!! The only bad thing was lack of sleep due to massive partying :) New Orleans and Vegas were insane!!!

Waste Of Money....
I decided to go with Trek America being a single traveller I wanted to be with a guide and other people....although the places I saw was amazing the trek was the WORSE EXPERIENCE OF MY LIfe....I was so angry at how much I paid and for what I got...... the camp sites are so out the way from the main attractions so you are stuck on a camp site with nothign to do.... you have to wait around for meals... to be good, there really is no freedom......then you are expected to tip your driver around $5-$10 dollars aday so not sure where my money went for the trip.....petrol and tents which were such of a bad standard......
I would recommened spending the money seeing places on your own, there really is no freedom on these treks and although there are good reviews cos the 'EXPERIENCE' is good but vaule for money......seriously stay away and dont waste your money you can achieve going to these places on your own and cheaper....

Trek
I have been on a trek america trip twice. The first one was really good, it was the westerner 2. Went to loads more places than you could have done on your own in 2 weeks. Loved it so much that I booked another trip with them, in Canada. Unfortunately the guide was really lazy on this trip. All of the group thought the same. Its a shame because the people on the trip was really nice and the places we visited were excellent. I also think that its not great value for money because you don't get any included activities, so your initial price only pays for the bus, accommodation and a lazy guide!

I Will Be Going On My Third Trekamerica Trip In Ap
I will be going on my third TrekAmerica trip in April 2011. THe first one I completed was Southern Sun from Los Angeles to New York in June 2009. THe trip took about three weeks, places visited were a brief stop in L.A, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Utah, Monument Valley, Austin Texas,Tennessee New Orleans, Washington DC,and a few more places where we did a few pitstops.
A few people wanted to visit The Jack Daniels distillery so we were able on consent from every one in the group to take a detour off our sxcheduled itineary. I don't drink, but I was very impressed with the distillery and the little village nearby. The treks are great if you want to see the States and travel conveniently and safely. You get to see alot of America in a very short space of time and the tour leaders are very informative nad tend to do as much as they can to help your trip go well.
It's a luck of the draw who you end up with on your travels, so far I have been very fortunate and a lot of how your trip goes is dependent on how you tend to be around other people. The more communicative you are, the better your team involvement and enjoyment. I would recommend Trek, For pointers on Los Angeles and where to stay and visit within your time frame, You can contact me on [email protected] I currently have a valid discount code which I am happy for you to use.
