Great Motor
Guest reviews are nonsense. Only 1 of these reviews can be considered credible as you cam just make up whatever tish you want & it gets published anyway.
I used my motor to power a spaceship & it worked great.
Parsuns 9.8 Auxillery.
Seen some bad revues on parsun 9.8hp and cannot understand it,I bought mine year and half ago and its fitted to a 25ft Colvic family fisher around 3 tonnes in weight and used as a "get me home" and I always use it to back into my stern on mooring as colvics ate notoriously bad running astern in a straight line.Dealer recommended a 4 blade high thrust prop for driving a heavy slowdisplacment boat. The parsun has performed faultlessly luckily I've not needed the get home mode as my BMC inboard is trustworthy. But I run theparsun a lot when out to keep it in running order and I always back onto my mooring pontoon with it where the high thrust prop grips astern like as crew in wood and boat feels like its guided on tramlines.Parsun good starter, smooth runner.Only thing I say its a little heavier on fuel although still very mean on fuel than dealer said but even that I put down to the fine pitch of specialist propi have.Great engine.
Parsun 9.9 Hp 4 Stroke
I bought this Parsun motor in 2008 on special. I used it 2 hours in 2009, it ran except it would jolt periodically, as though the propeller was hitting something but I was in deep water, so could not be. In 2010 and 2011 I used it a few hours, same thing but kept on running. In total I did around 8-10 hours of running a low to medium speed. I maintained it as indicated in the cryptic manual provided. Checked all oils, gear and motor, and stored it as indicated. In 2012 I took it out and after 15 minutes running it started jolting badly and just stopped. I had to row for 1.5 Km ( 1 mile approx.) before being towed by some friendly people. Now it seemed to have seized, the starter cord is just jammed solid. I took the engine cover off, the little locking handle broke in my hands! I just contacted a dealer to trade it, as is, for an Evinrude, but they say the parts are unavailable and don't even offer a penny for it. So I will have to have it fixed it to get rid of it, but would feel guilty selling this unreliable motor to some innocent person, so am I thinking of throwing it at the dump.
I was in 35 metres of water when my Evinrude jolted, As if the propeller was hitting something. Rather than relying on the depth gauge I found a lump of weed wrapped around the leg.
" I used it 2 hours in 2009, it ran except it would jolt periodically, "
why would you not take it back at this time for warranty instead of keep using it for another 3 years?? I understand you didn't use it often but you did keep using it

Further Update To My Review Of 30 June 2010. Engin
Further update to my review of 30 June 2010. Engine has failed again, apparently with the same problem of fouled carb jets resulting in back firing and gradually reducing power. It's loaded on a pallet waiting for collection by Bill Higham for further repairs.
The engine has been used for over a month now. There is already corrosion starting on the tip of the skeg although the engine hasn't touched bottom. I have noticed that the hex head screws securing the powerhead to the drive housing appear to be carbon steel rather than stainless as they are heavily rusted now.
Hopefully the engine will come back in working order, as a new engine should, but this has been a disappointing season. My opinion is that this engine will not prove very durable for use in salt water. Perhaps there are those who have had good service from these engines, but this one is a disappointment so far.
Same with my Suzuki and Evinrude, even my lawnmower. I use an extra filter that I use in line because modern fuels with ethanol can attract water. Takes about 10 minutes to fix yourself. Have you tried a different service station for fuel.

I'll Admit I Was Drawn By A Price £300 Below
I'll admit I was drawn by a price £300 below that of other brands like Tohatsu and Yamaha, but since it wasn't to be a primary engine and just for fun I thought it might be okay. It wasn't. The model in question is the Parsun 9.8 four-stroke 2010 model. After four hours the engine faltered and dropped to a low speed and would only idle if the choke was put on. Dealer, Bill Higham, thought it might be the oil sender or the CD unit and promptly sent the parts. However, the parts were the wrong ones. On further thought, they decided it was a fuel problem and I took it to a dealer where the main jet was found to be clogged with "manufacturing residue". Two trips--one to deliver and one to collect--plus 100 miles driving and 3 hours of time. Not very pleased about that. Can't fault either Bill Higham or the dealer who serviced it, but if it fouls once due to internal cleanliness then odds seem good it will happen again and again until the stuff is gone. We'll see.
As for the engine--it looks like an outboard, but it lacks some of the quality touches that one sees on more expensive motors. The tilt bracket is pretty lightweight and no provision is made for bolting to the transom although the manual says this must be done. Using the emergency starter cord requires removing the recoil starter (3 10mm hex head screws). Wire looms are a bit haphazard with extra lengths of wire simply folded up and stuck in a split hose. Access to the oil dipstick is effectively blocked by a wire loom that could have been routed differently. The pivot mechanism initially was pretty rough with an obvious burr situated in mid-position. This has reduced slightly with use. Throttle response through the range has been a bit patchy, but this may improve with a clean carb jet. The fuel tank provided has one way valves on the hose connectors that do not seal so be careful storing this in a car or indoors. On the plus side, the engine starts easily and is pretty quiet even at speed, and is lightweight for a four-stroke. Shifting is via a side mounted lever. Mine was difficult to shift in and out of forward although perhaps this too will improve with use. More expensive motors often employ a shifter built in to the throttle grip.
Overall, it's a motor, but it's the first new outboard I've purchased in over thirty years that failed right off the bat and had quality control issues. Marine engines must meet a high standard or they are a potential safety risk. If I was recommending an engine to a friend, I would say to buy a Tohatsu or a Mariner (made by Tohatsu I believe) or any of the other main brands. The inconvenience of the failure has already cost me more than the difference in the price of the other motors. This one might turn out okay or it might not. I expect that kind of uncertainty with a second-hand motor, not with a new one.
As for Bill Higham, who sold me the motor, they have been very good to deal with, taking calls and responding immediately to enquiries or problems. They also sell other brands! I have no doubt that they will make good if problems remain.
I could have told you what the problem was before even seeing the motor, and fixed it in 10 minutes. Same happened with my Suzuki, but I wouldn’t criticise Suzuki, maybe the place that supplied the fuel is worth a a roast.

I Pre-ordered My F9.8bms Parsun Outboard From My L
i pre-ordered my F9.8BMS parsun outboard from my local dealer back in october 2008 after seeing the advertisement on www.parsunoutboard.co.uk it seemed like a no brainer as the price of the parsun outboard was £1200 compared to the next best price of £1600 for a tohatsu. 1 year on here are my findings: the engine is light enough for me to carry 50yds down the beach, and it is powerful enough to get my seapro 360 airdeck inflatable on the plane with 2 adults and 2 kids (speed aprox 14mph).
i had the same fault as the other reviewer when i first got the engine stalling whn choke pushed in, took it back to my local dealer and he replaced the fuel pump diaphragm (an early common fault which has now been re- engineered i am told). since then it has been the best engine i have owned, done about 100hrs on lots of family holidays this summer.
conclusion - buy one!!!

Hi I Had A Parsun 9.8hp For 2 Weeks And Ran It On
hi i had a parsun 9.8hp for 2 weeks and ran it on my dinghy for 2 hour , the first hour was fine the second hour kept stopping now only runs on choke and stops when pushed in , can some one help , thanks
Your carby jets are blocked. Easy fix, just check YouTube for videos showing this. My Suzuki ran for 4 hours before this happened to me. Add an extra filter inline and do not use old fuel stored for any period of time. Fresh fuel = happy motor = happy you.
Q&A
The local Canadian Tire is selling their overstock at very cheap prices.
Is this a good motor?
