Alderney Is Is A Great Place To Go For A Quiet Get
Alderney is is a great place to go for a quiet getaway break. It is not the commercialism of Jersey and Guernsey; just tranquility. It has approximately 2000 inhabitants, and it is the third largest of the Channel Islands. You can access Alderney direct from the UK from Southampton Airport or via Guernsey or Jersey from Gatwick or Stansted. The flight from Southampton is approximately 45 minutes.
The Bellevue Hotel is a family run hotel, and it is a 5 minute taxi ride from Alderney airport. Guests are met and shown to their rooms by the owners, who show an exceptional attitude to details and guests needs. The hotel has an A La Carte restaurant, a bistro and a cosy pub, and they are all within the premises. Breakfast is full English, and it is more than enough to fill any belly. Rooms have telephone, ample wardrobes, trouser press tea and coffee making facilities, and they are exceptionally well furnished and comfortable.
The hotel, situated on one of the highest marks of the Island, provides great views, including over the harbour and breakwater. The Island is very small, but car hire is available (we used Braye Car hire - excellent service). Believe it or not, Alderney also has a train! This looks like a London Central Line Tube pulled by a lovely engine.
The evening meal Menu in the Bellevue is excellent. You get very large portions of lobster, crab, great steaks and fresh fish etc. The daily specials give excellent value for money.
The Island (8 Miles off the Normandy Coast) is a mere three and a half miles long X one and a half miles wide. It has several excellent beaches that are uncrowded, and the fine white sands are beautiful. St. Annes is a very small unique Town, and it has shops and supermarkets. The harbour area is a great visit. If you are into walks, this is ideal. The coastal walk is breathtaking, and it is full of history and nature. The Alderney Conservation Trust and The Alderney Wildlife Trust have done a tremendous job in improving facilities on the Island for all Visitors and Birdwatchers alike.
We have been to Alderney many times, and we think the Island and the Bellevue Hotel deserve recognition.
