Substandard Auction
Sold a motorcycle through Car and Classic and that went ok. Sent another to auction and it was a very poor experience. This was mainly due to there lack of communication, very hard to get a response from Car and Classic auction team, if you have questions and issues as in my case the professional description was poor the more a read it. The auction team were supposed to call after the auction finished to discuss other options, but nothing from them. The motorcycle didn’t sell but I was told that any sale made for two weeks after the auction that they will want commission on any sale this maybe the case but could I find out when this ends…no answer.
Personally I wouldn’t use them.
Car & Classic Are Not The Reputable Company I Thou
Car & Classic are NOT the reputable company I thought they were!
The description of the car I made an offer on was incorrect, it was not the “Meticulously restored” example the listing stated it was. There was even gaffer tape and rust visible on the car that had supposedly had a new floor and chassis, and a respray according to the listing.
I also have evidence to suggest the seller is known to them and was/is a dealer even though the car was listed as being sold by a private seller.
He has had 15 different classic cars in the last 18 months and I have proof he was a dealer.
To cut a long story short, I rejected the car.
Then things started to get very nasty, I was bullied and threatened with suggestions of legal action by the seller if I didn’t buy the car.
When I still refused, I had a phone call that was very unprofessional and intimidating stating that I hadn’t got a chance of getting my money back and winning in any court in the land, they even offered to tell my legal representative this!
I only agreed to the phone call as they said they wanted to settle this amicably for me. I suspect the truth was they didn’t want evidence in an email of their intimidation.
And they didn’t bank on me recording the conversation!!
It has taken a very stressful month to get a refund, but they kept £1,495 of my money for their supposed costs.
I never received any details of what these cost were for, I have emailed asking for an invoice or receipt to give to my legal representative but they have just ignored me.
Do not let the same thing happen to you, and avoid at all costs.
Your money is not safe as they state it is, the third party Escrow account is controlled by them and they help themselves to whatever they deem to be ‘their costs’!!
And to top it all off, the car car has been re-listed with the exact same description and still stating it’s a private seller.
Car & Classic Are Not To Be Trusted
After bidding for a car my bid was accepted. I went to see the car and found out that although it conformed to a lot of the description given on the site there was a lot that had NOT been mentioned and the seller continued to tell me some lies.
So I refused to buy the car. I wrote a long description of what happened to C&C but these were not accepted by C&C. Their reason was that the car did meet my expectations! This is true but because there were things that were not correct with the car which were not stated in the description. For example the car was supposed to be 4x4 drive but the owner had never used this and the two indicator lights showing that it was functioning did not function!! Before I went to see the car, which was a long drive for me, I was told repeatedly that if there was a problem with the car or description then my deposit would be refunded but I can't even get some communication!
I thought that I may have to pay some fees but I think that 828 euros is far too much.
So please be careful with this firm, they are very keen to sell but not honest or reliable
I was told by them they don’t get involved in disputes between buyers and sellers, and I would have to take it up with the ‘private seller’ directly if I felt he was at fault.
I am seeking legal advice, but still waiting since the 14th June and two emails (that have been ignored) requesting a detailed Invoice/receipt for what the £1,495 they kept as their costs was for.
I will also be giving the evidence I have that the seller was a dealer and I suspect that he still is, but being as he’s registered as a private seller I don’t have the same rights, Car & Classics terms and conditions apply instead!
Were you able to do anything about it? It is scandalous that they can just keep doing this.
I have had a similar experience, they kept £1,495 of my money when the car wasn’t as described!
Deposit Not Returned After False Description By Seller .!!!
The vehicle in question was not as described, it had an oil leak which leaked onto the exhaust manifold, which could have caught alite especially with a four hour journey back also a suspected head gasket. I refused to purchase and I was not given my deposit back. Lost £700. They did not take into consideration that I have a 35 year motor trade experience and run a business selling Classic Cars and they cited with the seller who took over a week to produce his evidence, which was the car was not smoking any more -(video which they did not share with me.
All they were interested in was keeping the £700 - my deposit,
I am going to instruct my Solicitors To get my deposit and travelling fees back even with the videos and photographs I took at the time which was clear evidence of the car issues. They did choose to ignore them.
Hi, did you have anu luck getting your money back?
I have had a similar experience, they kept £1,495 of my money when the car wasn’t as described!

Be Careful Before You Do Business
Be careful before you do business. We made an offer on a car, the minimum price was not met, but after the auction it was adjusted so it was met. I came into contact with the owner, but this was not his minimum price, it was higher, so he did not want to sell it for that price. In the end I don't have a car but I have to pay 4800 euros!
We'll put a lawyer on it!
Thank you for your message, several people have now contacted me. Maybe it would be a good idea for us to call. I suggest that we hire a lawyer together. They also no longer respond to my emails. In addition, the Dutch contact person no longer works for them.
Yes, I totally agree and am happy to be part of a group of similar complaints about Car & Classic.
They have bullied me (by phone call) I only agreed to a scheduled phone call, as they said they wanted to sort it out amicably for me. But I now think it was so there was no email evidence of what they said. And they also tried for a month to force me to buy the car., even though I rejected it from the start.
It was listed as “meticulously restored” and having had a full re-spray.
I have provided the details of what is wrong with the car including rust and gaffer tape, but they are now saying as the seller is listed as private, it’s up to me to deal with him direct. They even threatened the seller could take me to court to enforce the sale, or if sold for less claim the difference from me!
When I stated the definition of Meticulous: (with attention to detail and precision) and that the car had been misrepresented. I was told anyone can look up a word in the dictionary, and no court in the land would side with me. They even wanted to tell my legal representative this!!
I have proof the seller was a dealer and that he has had 15 different classic cars in the last 18 months. I was told that he and his wife are a lovely couple, ( I said I wasn’t disputing this) which leads me to suspect they are known to the staff member at car & classic, possibly friends? But because he is listed as a private seller their terms and conditions apply, and neither he or them would recite the contract or cancel the sale.
To make matters worse the car is currently listed back on C&C on an active auction with bids, it still has exactly the same description, and the seller is still listed as private.!!!!
Hello, thanks for your message. I think we all have to do something about this. There will probably be several. You can't do business like that!
I have had a similar experience, they kept £1,495 of my money when the car wasn’t as described!
Selling My Car
I made the mistake of using Car and Classic recently to try to sell my car.
After their initial contact it went down hill.
I wasn't assigned a journalist and the description of my car was frankly rubbish.
The car failed to meet the reserve twice and then they refused to relist it.
Then they told me they were trying to sell it outside of auction and kept sending me enquiries from " potential buyers" which always came to nothingapart from one offer that I accepted and was then withdrawn as they allowed the buyer to change their mind !.That broke their own terms and conditions..
Then they did not respond to my emails and never answered the phone.
I put a bad review on Trustpilot which they had removed !!!
How is that right ?
Avoid.
I wasn’t allowed to have the sale cancelled, even though I rejected the car, as it wasn’t as described in the listing. They kept £1,495 of my money!

Can No Longer Be Relied On
I've used them since they started as I still hobby restored Brit classics on retirement and never had any probs until recently. I never used their auction as I don't like way they operate it's too expensive to set up. I put in my own fully restored Moggy Convertible last year and last week I had to renew it.Then they showed that now they are run by arrogant clueless youngsters. They listed it with VAT which isn't applicable as private + as a project and that explained why I've had no enquiries for at least two months.Who would pay £9.5K plus Vat for a Moggie Convertible?
Trying to correspond with them over this was painful and it was obvious the person was getting ratty. Then it was taken off completely and they would not talk about this. So beware as they are no longer a professional business. Seems to be since they were sold to a company called Cazana who when I sent their CEO a letter about all this, they sent it back as not known?? As they are handling large sums of money on their auctions and are deliberately hiding who they are and where they are..no phone number and no address is seen on their website. No names of who is in charge. ALL THE HALLMARKS OF A BUSINESS UP TO NO GOOD. BEWARE I HAD TO LOOK THEM UP ON COMPANIES HOUSE
RECORDS.
****warning**** Carandclassic Supports Bad Descriptions
I bought a Rolls-Royce from 2014, with only 53.000 km. Description said the car was, although repainted, in great condition. I went to take a look and found out the paintjob was done very bad, not even matching a 500 euro car.
The description was right they said, and my downpayment (15k!!) will not be returned!
The commercial interest for keeping the seller in did weigh more then mine, so for this sham they simply look away. This makes it a crooked organization!
I have had a similar experience, they kept £1,495 of my money when the car wasn’t as described!
Q&A
I'm looking at Toyota in irland but if I bought it how do I know we’re to pick the car up from and wheaher it even exists?
