My Htc Magic Is Coming To The End Of Its Life With

My HTC Magic is coming to the end of its life with me now but I wanted to come and share my experiences with anyone who's looking at picking up a really great phone, at now, a relatively low price. It's a phone which is now being superseeded by the Hero, HD2 and now the Desire, but Vodafone are still offering it at a great price on contract or payg.

I've had the phone for over a year now and have been really impressed by the Android operating system on it. The gui is intuitive and really quick and I like the 3 'home' screens you can have. Each of my home screen is full of apps, widgets and other shortcuts, which is the other great thing about the phone. Unlike the iphone, most of the apps for the android handset are free. Ok there are paid ones, but the free ones are great for me and even the paid ones are only a couple of euros here and there.

The only downside to the phone is the camera which is pretty much useless. However, if you're after a handset which is packed full of features and great apps, this is the one for you - especially now when it's at a great price!

Great Phone. Never Been Passionate About Mobile Ph

Great phone. Never been passionate about mobile phones before, but this phone is so easy to use, so user friendly and fits in the hand much better than the iPhone. Great apps that are all easily accessible through Google and some great apps that totally transform what you use your phone for. try one.

I Purchased The Htc Magic From Vodafone About Six

I purchased the HTC Magic from Vodafone about six months ago now. I am very pleased with the software and functionality. Using Google Apps on the phone is great and the set-up was a doddle.

The major issue O have with the phone is the build quality. The phone is meant to last a two year contract and it isn't going to make it. Already after six months, the phone looks warn and old. It is not as easy to get skins for the Magic like the iPhone, and as a result the phone takes it's fair share of bashing.

The only other complaint is the app store is rather limited compared to the iPhone store. It looks like developers would rather spend developing for Apple which is a shame.

Overall I would give it a go if you don't want to be tied into an iPhone, otherwise I would say go with Apple.

I wouldn't say the app store is limited, to steal the apple line, 'there's an app for that', is true about the android market place. There's not a genuinely useful app I've not been able to find through the app store. There's more and more developers coming on board every day for the android OS and the apps are getting better.

I Have Had The Htc Magic For 3 Months Now. Long E

I have had the HTC Magic for 3 months now. Long enough to really assess it's strengths and weaknesses. Like many I decided to try something different from the iPhone (of which was my previous phone). Unfortunately that has turned out to be a big long term mistake (Stuck in an 18 month contract). Sure the Anadroid powered HTC has some good features, it is just not a patch on the iPhone, especially its user interface (UI).

Firstly the good point. Google integration - I just love the mail and calender. It is great to be able to share your calender. There are also some good Apps out there on Google Marketplace, but still missing the big ones that you can download for the iPhone. I miss the Sky news, Sky+ and Facebook apps that the iphone has. Sure there are Android alternatives but they are light years behind the Apples counterparts. Now for the "issues" -- The touch screen is just not responsive enough, it lags, stutters and judders when scrolling, really poor and annoying after a while. The keyboard input is too slow with you having to wait typing while the phone catches up!. The predictive text is not a patch on the iPhone. Photo gallery is almost unusable. I bought a 16Gb memory card thinking it would give me iPhone type storage, but when you have lots of photos on this it just takes forever to load them. Also a massive miss is the ability to double tap and "pinch", this just make the iPhones gallery and web browsing experience so much better and easier to use. Hopefully some things will improve with future updates, but in it's current form the HTC Magic is very disappointing for me. The iPhone is a very expensive commitment on a contract but is simply so much better - You get what you pay for in this case - Oh Yes, anyone want a HTC Magic going cheap?

With regard to you 'pinch to zoom' comment, have you considered/tried 'rooting' your Magic?

Makes a world of difference and will take, maybe, half an hour first time. After that, if you go the cyanogen route ( pun not intended ) you can update over the air to the latest modded roms.

Thanks for a detailed review on HTC Magic. It looks like a very good smartphone that can be compared with others. Great features but I guess the price would be a little turn off.

Great To See The Android Os Moving Into A Nice Loo

Great to see the Android OS moving into a nice looking, easy to use handset. I've owned the HTC Magic for a week now and getting used to it quickly. I love that its open source, so much opportunity and not just another iPhone... I spent weeks trying to decide over the iPhone 3GS and this device, I am happy with my decision, a smaller, smart looking handset that is fast and integrates beautifully into Google Applications. I know people moan about batteries, they are all bad and stone age technology, however I've found this battery to beat my friends on the iPhone - bring it on!

Guys N Gals, Get Ready 'cause Android Is Here And

Guys n Gals, get ready 'cause Android is here and its here to stay,Yeah yeah, I know we've already had a look at Google's much talked about mobile O/S on the fabulous G1, but here on the HTC Magic ( exclusive to Vodafone in the UK ) its available in updated format in the form of the Cupcake update ( already available to G1 users to the best of my knowledge). Not being new to touchphones I was not worried in the slightest about my ability to get to grips with that side of the UI and in any case I would have my usual 'practice' entering contacts .... or would I??? In a word, NO. To use the fabulous Android Market, more of which later, you are required to have a googlemail account, which is fair enough i suppose. Take the time to enter your contact details ( phone/email/web/postal ) in your googlemail account and then enter your mail address into your phone and it will sync the contacts... easy.. simple, brilliant. As far as the interface/ui/os are concerned the android platform and the capacitive touchscreen of the Magic are dream partnership. General navigation and web browsing on the handset are a dream, simple taps and swipes of the hand are enough to whizz thru menus/web pages. And as far as text messaging is concerned, have no fears again, especially in Landscape, its simple. Let the phone help and never expect to be quite as fast as a hardware T9 enable keypad and you'll never go far wrong. And so, to the market, Androids 'app store'.... Where to begin, iplayer, check... MSN, check... compass, check... Navigation, check... all for free. Over 3G, over wifi, over 2G the apps download without a hitch ( tho obviously quickest over wifi, slowest over 2G ). There are apps which let you configure the phone to switch profiles based on location/time. And more being added on a daily basis, Android is JUST starting, given time this is going to be HUGE. If your not convinced have a hunt around on google and there are lists and lists of apps for android. As for the phones 'other' features, the 3mp camera is acceptable if basic, but in daylight it will take a decent snap while never replacing a dedicated camera, how can it?? the sensor is like a pin head. The phone is bundled with a 2gig sd card, data cable, charger and soft leather wallet. To surmise, for too long the mobile phone market has been obsessed with megapixels and such, when in fact, the way forward has been a truly intuitive and open OS, Google have nailed it and then some.
