I Got The 856 After Takig Back A Bush Dvd Player B

I got the 856 after takig back a Bush DVD player because it went mad saying everything was the wrong region

My good points list pretty much covers it all really theres no disk (that fits in the drive) that this machine wont play and mine was only £65 its just an excellent machine.

I have no problems so far with image or sound quality and i'm even getting multiregion DVD's soon which it will play using the region code

I Bought This Schneider Dvd856 Dvd Player Because

I bought this Schneider dvd856 DVD player because my Tosh won't play CDR's, I have watched Region 1 & 2 DVD's, DVDR's, VCD, SVCD, and MP3's all worked fine.

Not quite sure how the Karaoke feature is supposed to work, I borrowed a CD+G which played the music, but no graphics on screen.

I Was Looking For A Cheap Player As A Present That

I was looking for a cheap player as a present that would play anything I threw at it and with the Schneider DVD 856 I have found it. The picture was spot on and the audio damn good as well. I'm not one of these who connects 40 speakers to a DVD player, I want a machine that will play discs on my TV, I'm not bothered if it doesn't make the tea and mow the lawn, I have a girlfriend for that.

Summary, 99 quid for a very good machine, looks pretty nice too.

I Had One Of These Schneider Dvd856 Dvd Players Wh

I had one of these Schneider DVD856 DVD players which was great but it wouldn't play some dvd's so I exchanged it. The exchange unit had a different startup screen so I presume different firmware: I've now had three of these units all with the same problems. Major problem: when navigating back to the root menu these players can lockup and you have to eject the disc. The zoom goes into slow motion so you can't watch a widescreen film slightly zoomed in, instead of pan and scan. The audio output is low. Amazingly these players will decode dolby prologic so older dvd's with 5.1 will play in surround with effects coming from the rear speakers.

I don't know what to do with this player. It's picture quality far out performs a cyberhome, mustek and raoc players I tried but the locking up is a real pain.

I have the Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy DVD collection and all of the players except the Schneider the rising Sun at the beginning looks dithered: the Schneider plays it beautifully. But: don't expect a fix from Schneider U.K, to be fair they haven't had many complaints so they will not be investigating the problems.

hi i have 856 it has stoped playing dvd only

playes vcd any ideas

I personally have had no problems with any locking with my 856. I can return to the menu every time be it either a DVD or a VCD. I also do not exibit a zoom slowdown either. I would have preferred a variable zoom as on my LG as I feel the zoom is of limited function but certainly works.

I cannot comment on low audio since I use a separate DD decoder via the audio digital output. I havent tried the analogue outputs at all.

One problem which I have found is a slight tinny almost over sampling of the high end asound when using VCDs. I have tried using various non standard audio rates but this makes things worse or the VCD doesnt play. I havent had any complaints from my customers and it sounds fine on my PC.

For a cheap budget player I think the 856 is great. and I feel a 1/10 is far too harsh. 5/10 is my personal rating. If you dont play VCDs then I would say 7/10.

actually you're right - it's the DVD857 which is fine - the 856 could be rubbish for all i know - humble apologies

Keith M.

I wrote the original review and it is fair and I stand by all of my comments. I actually bought another of these players because of the outstanding picture quality but the they do lock up on various DVD's, have a useless zoom facility and have low audio output. They have some excellant points, I just wish Schnieder UK would fix the firmware. PS, other people reviewing this player have said the same!

Not really fair comment - I've had one and it's perfectly fine and represents excellent value compared to the big brands

I Thought I'd Give This Schneider Dvd856 Dvd Playe

I thought I'd give this Schneider dvd856 DVD player a try as it was well spec'd and the only one in Asda's. It's well built and region select is via the "8421" method (no macrovision hack). Picture quality seems good with no visible pixelation. VCD performance is also good. On the downside, the major gripe is that the sound level output (regardless of setting) is a lot lower than broadcast. So unless you've got a clever tv to compensate for this it's *very* annoying. Also it got stuck during the interactive game on the second dvd of Harry Potter. Also, the remote feels very cheap and could be layed out better. Given the limited time I've had it and the dvds I've tried there may be better ones out there e.g. the Daewoo DVG8000. I'll probably return mine. They're also quite hard to find!

By the way...the Deccavideo (PowerHouse) and Technika (Empire) models are no longer available.

I think the 856 is great for the money, but how do you do the region code?

A New Dvd Player At Asda For £99, The Schnei

A new DVD player at Asda for £99, the schneider dvd856 looked well spec'd, with plenty of outputs and MP3 support (and DTS support too).

Picture was rock solid and showed no artifacts or pixelation etc. Sound was nice too (the 3D effect only works for audio CDs) and it even played the Creed VCD no problem. But...

Playing Die Hard 1 and 2 and the Die Hard 2 extras disc all resulted in the player locking up and reverting to standby (after around 4 to 10 minutes). Would also lock up at the menu stages sometimes...seemed to be different places each time and as tried across 3 discs I assume it was the player.

Took it back and got a refund (was thinking of trying another but even the stock had only come in that day it had all sold by the evening anyway).

So I'd have to give this a low score. There is a multi-region hack (apparently) at:

http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/schneider_dvd/schneider_dvd-856/schneider_dvd-856.htm

I didn't try it. This is my second cheap DVD player in 2 weeks (first was a Dansai 852(?) - see seperate review on this site). Am seriously considering only going for a big name from now on (Toshiba SD110?).

Hope these comments help and that you are luckier if buying one.

(For the record, when I took it back I asked Customer Services if they'd had others back...they didn't know, but were less than complimentary about Schneider products!!)

I have a Schneider DVD856 and I have found that it prefers decent quality CDRs if you are playing your own stuff. VCDs work fine (originals and CDRs are ok) I don't have any SVCD originals but when I have encoded my own the quality is very choppy - even on high bitrates (2k+ are still jumpy and choppy) MP3 quality is average but the 8.3 file format is horrid. The region hack doesn't work on mine so I may have a different software revision.

I think the review was a bit harsh as it is a cheap player and does what it says it does. The major gripes are SVCD quality is poor and the remote control layout is poor. But on the positive side it plays VCD and will accept reasonable quality CDRs
