First Of All, Let Me Say That I Know It's A Remake
First of all, let me say that I know it's a remake of an earlier Swedish film called "Let the right one in", I also know there's a book of the same name, and I'm not going to compare this to either, I will judge it on it's own merits.
A lonely 12yr old boy (Owen)lives with his divorced mum, who has no time for him. He has no friends, and is the subject of constant bullying at school. Then he meets a small, dirty, scruffy and equally lonely girl of the same age (Abi) who has just moved into his apartment block. After a faltering start, a friendship develops. And the killings start.
You see, Abi has a secret. "How old are you, really?" brings the reply "I've been 12 for a very long time....."
This is a "first love" story as much as it is a horror, but it's nothing like the other vampire love stories that have been driving teenage girls mad. Our vampire is horrific, yes, but tragic and pathetic. There are no great forests or mountains, it's all in a small and run-down town. And it is a thousand times better for it. Beautifully poignant, with an ending that leaves a feel-good factor whilst raising more questions.
