We Had A Problem, As I'm Sure A Lot Of People Do,

We had a problem, as I'm sure a lot of people do, with having an extremely hot loft conversion room.

It is insulated to a reasonable level but in the summer it can get up to 30degrees (and this is in the UK!) which is obviously not a usable temperature.

When its hot outside we can touch the windows and they are red hot like a radiator, so we figured that a lot of heat was entering the room from the velux windows.

So, we went off and research the velux awning blinds - they have 3 different types depending on the level of light and heat you want them to let in. The more light you let in, the more heat comes in.

We went for the one that lets in the least light and thus the least heat as I really wanted to keep the temperature down.

They arrived and were reasonably simple to install. The instructions were a bit confusing but once I figured it out they were easy and quite quick. No drilling or anything required which was a plus.

They let in a bit of light so its not pitch black in the room so for me that's fine.

The heat reduction is significant. It certainly doesnt turn our loft room into an ice cold room, but I estimate that it takes 3-5degrees off the temperature, so where it would have been 28-30 degrees on a very hot day, its now more like 23-25 degrees. Still on the warm side, but not ridiculously hot as it was before so its now a usable space.

All in all I'd say if you're suffering from exceptionally hot loft space and you have velux windows installed, its definitely worth the investment in these blinds as its made a very significant difference to our loft space heat.

We dont actually sleep in the room (it's a spare room) so I can't be 100% sure, but I've never heard any noise from them and none of our guests have ever mentioned it, so I'd say they are pretty good actually in windy conditions.
