Overlooked Loyalty

I'm from Dublin I've 2 staffs and they are the nicest most caring dogs I've ever had they even get along great with the kids supervised obviously well one I have myself he won't even sniff the kids unless I tell him it's OK and the other licks der feet if I thought there was any danger there is no way I'd let them near the kids there pets and they act that way if you want to fight them keep them away from parks and other dogs and children

Intelligent, Fun Loving And Energetic

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are everything I want from a dog.

From the age of 18 I have been working with dogs, whether that be as a dog walker, trainer or volunteering at rescue centres. Especially with my work in rescue, I have come into contact with a lot of Staffies...I quickly came to the conclusion that they are an amazing breed! :)

Our first dog, who we adopted because our landlord said no bull breeds, was a Collie cross. He is insanely high energy and intelligent, but is definitely not an easy dog. We adopted him at under a year old and he came to us with issues including separation anxiety, resource guarding, over-excitement with other dogs and fear aggression with strangers.

Almost three years ago we rescued a Staffy puppy. She had been purchased from a pet shop to breed with the "owners'" adult dog. They didn't get on, so she was left to live outside in winter with no shelter. We heard about her and brought her home.

She is a wonderful, wonderful dog. She is amazingly intelligent (picks things up far faster than our other dog), incredibly loving towards us and adores everybody and everything!

She knows over thirty tricks and she has NEVER shown any aggression. Even though she has been attacked several times by other dogs (they were all off lead and their owners had no control over them), she has never so much as growled.

Can Staffies be dog aggressive? Sure, but so can any dog. Most Staffies are stable, affectionate, loyal and fun-loving dogs.

A Great Dog

I HAVE A STOFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER, AND SHE IS A GREAT AND INTELLEGENT DOG. I DO DOG AGILITY WITH HER AND SHE LOVES TO LEARN ALL OF THE TIME.

SHE IS GREAT WITH PEOPLE AND SHE ABSOLUTLY LOVES HUMANS!SHE IS SUCH A FUNNY DOG SHE ENTERTAINS ME ALOT.IF YOU WERE TO GET A STFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER (STAFFIE)YOU WOULD BE BEST TO GET A RESCUE STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER, AS THERE ARE LOTS THAT ARE IN DOGS HOMES AND NEED A NEW LOVING HOME. ALL MY STFFIE DOES ALL DAY IS SLEEP.

I WOULD RECCOMEND A STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER TO ANYBODY!

Staffys Are A Mixed Bag...

I have a Staffy & have had considerable experience prior to owning one. There are more cons than I often see reported online --- chief among them is the Staffys absolute, irresolvable propensity for destruction. Time & again this breed will prove to you wrecking things is virtually a bodily function for them. Their famous (infamous?) stubbornness means there's precious little they won't or can't destroy once they set their mind to it. This is an extremely gritty dog. There is no concept of, 'Quit,' with Staffys. They are tough enough & determined enough to eat nails & ask for seconds. Take extra care if you are hanging clothes on the line --- they are astonishing jumpers.

I also strongly dispute the notion that this is an intelligent breed, I have seen way too much evidence to the contrary. You ever seen a dog eat it's own damn dish bowl? I mean mangle the thing beyond recognition? Yeah, me neither, until I was introduced to Staffys. I have seen a lot to suggest they are very much a rather dim-witted breed --- your average Poodle or German Shepherd will leave them for dust in this category every time.

Forget about keeping them with cats or other small animals, too. They are part-Terrier at the end of the day, & that means they have a very high prey drive. They are intimidating dogs to small animals, & they're way the hell too impulsive not to pursue anything that runs.

Lastly, they are a poor guard dog (if you value that). They absolutely love people & are dangerously trusting, hence their reputation as a favourite amongst dog-nappers.

Look, the dog is not short on great qualities. They're deeply loyal, highly playful, tough-as-nails, have relatively few breed-specific problems, & are incredibly fun. They are a great entertainer & require minimal grooming. I just want to point out that I see far too many lopsided reviews of this breed, where reliably-recurring behavioural traits are downplayed or ignored entirely, & it's irresponsible & unfair on both potential owner & Staffy.

There are downsides to every breed & the Staffy, contrary to the writings of its fans, has its share.

I agree with some of this (playful, funny, determined, high prey drive, impulsive) BUT my staffordshire bull terrier has never destroyed a thing in our home (except his own toys). If I say " leave it" a few times, he does just that. In fact, I figured he would chew up furniture and destoy something off limits. Nope, not even left alone for 4-6 hours out of his crate/pen.. Either I won the staffy jackpot or I taught/trained him correctly. Staffys are smarter than we may think at first. Just my two cents. He's my first dog though so I'm always learning.

I just wanted to say, I own a staffie and she's NEVER chewed a single thing other than her own toys. They are not all like that. I would agree though that they aren't the smartest dogs out there!

this is a ridiculous review . I am 50 yrs old and have had staffies all my life since I was a toddler , I have always had lots of dogs in our household as well as cats , when my children were small they also had rats , guinea pigs rabbits etc which they used to let out to run around indoors with ducks and chickens roaming free in the garden and horses in paddock , i have NEVER had one of my staffs attack any of them .All my dogs are taught from an early age that you DO NOT chase any small creature ever (I also have other breeds including terriers ) ,they are very intelligent and easy to train with kind CONSISTENT training. I have also never had one that was destructive. They must , however be properly socialised with other dogs from an early age to prevent dog aggression and even then if another dog attacks them , they will retaliate and unless you have trained them correctly to listen to your commands , as with any breed the situation can get out of control

My family owned a Staffy for 14 years. Her name was Abby, and she was the smartest dog I have ever personally known. She even made two attempts to vocalize. She never once destroyed anything, and she never jumped. Abby's only flaw was her aggression toward other dogs, arising from her need to protect her people family. We have two guinea pigs, and she never once tried to hurt them. We also had a cockatiel who walked all around her, and she never bothered him. My sister-in-law also had a Staffy, and her dog, though less aggressive than Abby, was also a wonderful pet, though she would jump in your lap. I love the breed. The person who wrote the other comments must have had an unusual experience.

Why Have A Lap Dog When You Can Have A Staffy?

I grew up with Huskies, Malamutes, and one wolf, all high prey drive, challenging breeds. I loved all of them.

I now have a male, 13 week old Staffy puppy, and I get a little more pleasantly surprised every day. He's is smart as a whip, and has been relatively easy to train so far with the standard sit, down etc. He is displaying some dominant behavior (particularly to my wife) which we are working on. No worries there for me, but my wife has never owned a dog, never mind a Staffy, so it bothers her because she thinks he is angry at her, which he is not. I'm working on her as well :-).

I think it's going to be a wonderful, challenging family member, and I'm excited for the spring to come.

To the ear question person, you may have to have an expert glue your Staffy's ear in the correct position. All puppies have soft cartilage in there ears, and this will harden as the puppy ages.

Staffy Love

i have a blue 7month old male staffy and he is a wonderful family pet! i hate all the negativity these poor dogs get because of the idiot owners!! i have two young children and a baby on the way and he is so good with them i have never had such a well behaved loyal and loving pet! he is very intelligent also yes he barks and may look mean but he wouldnt know how to bite! and he has lots of doggy friends too who he loves to play with! there is not an aggressive bone in my wee boys body and i hope this horrible bad label these dogs get lifted soon as my dog is a very fine example of the breed with a very impressive five generation kc champ bloodline i look forward to carry on the line of fine dogs :)

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Review

it is the best dog ive ever had so far i had a central asian shepard a neopolitan mastiff (italian mastiff) and a pug but the staffy is like all of them in one hes very playful hes a good watch dog and he keeps intruders away so hes a great guard dog too but you must train him from a young age and make sure not to let him play around strangers so he does actually guard your property otherwise they are extremely friendly with people but not with other molloser breeds but gets along with other dogs such as chihuahua he just plays with them.

Amazing!

This dog is possibly the best breed you could possibly get. We have our little girl Molly, who is roughly 35lb. She is the sweetest dog ever! Our neighbor also has a boy staffys who visits regularly. Staffys are loving, affectionate, adorable, and great watchdogs! All Molly ever wants to do is lay in your lap and be at your feet. She is so good with our two daughters and they absolutely adore her! She has never been unfriendly towards anyone we have ever come across. This dog is defiantly not the reputation they may have. Staffys are wonderful family dogs and are a great size. They would do well alone or with other animals. We have two cats, and all Molly wants to do is play with them! I'm so glad we adopted her.
