We Traded Up To The Swift Sundance 630g (actually
We traded up to the Swift Sundance 630G (actually the Marquis Motorhomes enhanced version called 'Lifestyle') from a Dethleffs 4 berth, and can't see why the German machine was so revered for quality!
The Swift is sturdily constructed from aluminium / GRP mix, not ultra modern, but proven, and at 23' long provides true 4 person accommodation in a 6 berth layout.
Outside, it has a huge over-cab double, so watch that height at 9'10" and a good sized garage which will house either a decent sized scooter up to 150kg, or all your bikes and camping gear!
Inside, the front dinette is practical and works well, although evenings need the front seats to be fitted with swivels for better lounging. The 630G is good value, so having to spend the extra isn't too offensive!
The kitchen is fine, with fridge, full oven, dual fuel hob and good worktop space. It's easy to walk past the chef too, without bumping your next meal out of a window, as is often the case.
The fittings are excellent with loads of attractive lights, top blinds, rooflights and the usual stuff, including dual fuel heating so you can utilise the site's hookup or camp independently without freezing.
Good points: Quite astonishing value when you consider the size, space, fittings and spec. (even though £36k seems a lot). It has the best beds in class, and a layout that offers comfy space for four. That's fairly rare at this price.
Look around, and you'll see all it needs is a microwave (slots straight in), TV / DVD (again, they slot right in) and pair of seat swivels to make a killer specification. As much as I tried, I just couldn't see why other similarly specced motorhomes were all £8k more!?
Gripes? Hmmm...the shower head converts to a washbasin tap, but it's all a bit fiddly and ill planned, so I'll add a proper basin tap instead. The shower cubicle setup is a bit contrived but it has enough space, and the washroom, when used as a washroom, is fine otherwise.
Large overhangs at the rear can swing the opposite way when you're maneuvering in a tight space, and this behemoth has a large one, so watch it!
It's not exactly state of the art stuff, this particular camper, possibly a little dated in fact, but this adds to the charm and keeps the price down, which is a fair trade if you don't mind some of the all GRP model owners looking down their noses.
This is a new machine, so I'll update this with any problems or updates.
I have recently thought about selling my 2006 630g with 70,000 miles. I was thinking I would get around £20,000 . Was looking to downsize a little. However, I cannot find anything better in this price range so have decided to keep it for a few more years.
Great review.
Thanks.
I found this review very helpful because... I have a 2006 model and agree with all he says. Its a great van better the more exp machines. great charm and eqipment. Love it to bits.
The Sundance is now sold!
The lessons to be learnt; Go to a trusted site to buy your new Motorhome from. Check it out on Reviewcentre first, and don't get striped up like I was!
More news, and it's not all good;
The Fiat chassis is great, apart from the offside rear brake pipe which strangely decided to come loose at just over 3000 miles whilst traveling at 70mph fully laden.
Despite Marquis assuring me the vehicle had been carefully prepared, I now realise they were lying, as this could have caused a headline story on the 6 O'clock news, as the rig weighs nearly 4 tons, and would have done major damage if I hadn't managed to control it.
The dual circuit brake system did NOT offer any help, I had total brake loss with a sinking pedal....
I have now discovered why the bedroom lights didn't work after Marquis fitted the aerial for the TV!
Their mechanic drilled through the wires, and, quite aware of this, proceeded to attempt a repair on the wiring, sadly leaving exposed live wires to continually blow my fuses, which is better than catching fire and burning the occupants to death I suppose.....
Don't get me wrong here, I love the 'Enterprise' dearly, it's fast, spacious and has a great garage. I just have no real confidence any more, and can't deal with the dealer any more.
They actually told me off for complaining about poor workmanship, can you believe it?
Neither Marquis nor Swift want to know about my problems, despite the £32,000 price tag.
I think Germany may be my next source....
OK, The Swift has done 2000 miles, and been used quite a few times now, and although the machine is basically very sound, we have a few issues.
The electrics do not appear to be reliable, with faults found on the mains system, fridge light, bedroom lights and space heater so far.
The dealer concerned, namely Marquis Motorhomes in Greenlawns, Harpenden have proved themselves to be rude, inept and fail to return phone calls.
They have had written instructions, and failed to read them.
As a result of this, I'll pay somebody to fix this, despite the 3 year warranty being barely 6 months old, and will not deal with them again.
My Swift will be used weekly until it's changed, but proves to be a very good workhorse apart from the electrics and poor after-sales.
The next review will be on a far larger machine, as we plan to travel around Europe soon!
