What's Happened To The House On The Bridge - Winds

WHAT'S HAPPENED TO THE HOUSE ON THE BRIDGE - WINDSOR!!

We went for Birthday meal the other night as I have used this restaurant for special occasions for many years, because of its ambiance and its location next to the river.

On arrival the decor looked shabby and tired, there were portable heaters scattered every where, just placed indiscriminately. We were shown to our table I ordered the wine (chablis), champayne turned up, not good so far.

We ordered the food (starter)which turned up very quickly, the scallops wern't hot almost cold, the chowder soup was also cold. The main course also turned up just after we finished the starter.

I ordered peppered steak, this turned up like a mix grill instead of noveau cuisine with hardly any peppercorn sauce. We ordered saute potatoes, we ended up with oven chips that had been re-heated (Gordan Ramsay should have eaten this! love to see his comments).

As for noveau cusine, both meals were exactly like a mix grill with a grilled tomatoe on a grilled mushroom, which toatly changed the dinamics of what we expect from the "House on the Bridge". The vegetables were hard and tasteless, again looked liked they had been re-heated.

The staff looked un-motivated and to top it off, there was no sweet trolley, which I got to say was always something to look forward too. The dessert menu turned out to be 4 dishes (small dessert menu), that looked extremely stoggie.

NOT a good experience for a Birthday dinner for my partner, so you know what is coming next! You are right, we shall not be using the "House on The Bridge" again, until it has been total refurbish and it has changed its chef and menu.

Ps On Re-reading My Review I Realise I Should Have

PS on re-reading my review I realise I should have made clear that we had not ordered any side dishes. When the vegetables arrived we assumed they were part of the main course and included in the price!!

Impossible To Recommend. They Have A Fabulous Loc

Impossible to recommend. They have a fabulous location, passing tourists and trade on that. I took two young foreign students for a light, vegetarian lunch. Staff attitude was at best unhelpful. My main course (roast mediterranean veg @£15.50)was the size of a starter. Girls had generous spinach/ ricotta pancakes. We were also brought boiled carrots, broccoli, green beans. I commented on this very curious choice of veg accompaniment and received non-commital replies. Imagine my astonishment to find 3 x veg portions @£5.50 added to the bill! (not to mention the automatic 10% service charge - no prizes for guessing why that is done.) Fine dining this is not, despite the showy attempts at silver service. And they try to rip you off in the bargain! Avoid.

My Experience At House On The Bridge Is As Follows

My experience at House on the Bridge is as follows; The avocado came with mixed seafood that had the texture of defrosted tin food, the escargot swam in what tasted like water rather than garlic sauce, the potato and leek soup was bland and the meat was hard to chew. Only the prices have not missed the sign of the times and appear to have been updated to top class London level with hardly a main course under £20 and starters averaging around £10-15. With a drop of wine you easily spend £50-60 per person. Absolutely a no go zone for me.

This Weekend Passed I Had Dinner At The House On T

This weekend passed I had dinner at the House on the Bridge, Eton with a group of friends.

After enjoying a pleasant day at the races it was a real disappointment to arrive at this establishment, it's ambiance as cold as the breeze blowing through the open windows. The windows were kindly closed but the mood never really thawed.

I am not averse to quiet but this place felt like a morgue. One was made to feel uncomfortable when speaking as the hush was encouraged by a lack of ambient music or any other sounds of life.

The menu looked good but more than half of us didn't enjoy the food. The mushroom soup was adequate but expensive, the prawn starter looked good and received the appropriate noises of encouragement, the vegetarian main unfulfilling and the chocolate cake was dry. When I enquired if the chicken was free-range, the waiter said he did not know and did not offer to enquire - this I feel is unforgivably bad service. There isn't a lot of choice in Eton but I would have been better off eating on the other side of the river.

In all I would describe the House on the Bridge as stuffy, uncomfortable and not good value-for-money. I thought the food was not bad but for the money there are far better options.

Bon appetit
