Clown's Restaurant, Colchester

My first visit to Clown's, and I have to say it is now my favourite Restaurant

If you want Good well presented food, a vast choice of meals and a great service Clown's has it all, I could not fault it.

Was in a large party booking with ages from eight years to nearly seventy there was something for everyone, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

I live in Kent, but will travel to visit again, and will be booking my own Birthday meals here.

me and a friend visited clowns in december 2012 we both orderered the mixed grill £15.99. I Have had mixed grills from different restaurants but in my opionion this is one of the best for the money. The good thing that clowns do is their menu it goes in detail whats included and weight of steak, sausages etc so you have idea what your getting. i ordered gammon and chips in a different restaurant (not clowns) thought i was getting gammon steak but got two slices of gammon ham! not quite the same. I found the portion size at clowns very good, chips came on side plate and there was plenty of them unlike some restaurants who put only a few on your main plate. I dont understand people who complain about getting too much food id rather have too much than too little. The food was well cooked and tasty, didnt find it greasy like some other customer on here has said, however i do agree that the restaurant is a bit dated however it looks clean, the staff are well presented and the food is good which is the main thing note to owners i have been here before so i know what the restaurant was like but from outside the restaurant as a new customer looks like cheap cafe your a lot better than a cheap cafe needs work to draw new customers in

Decided to take my family out for a meal and after a brief debate my 3 year old daughter and my girlfriend decided we were going to Clowns on Colchester high street.

The restaurant was busy but we were still quickly and warmly greeted by staff who made a lovely fuss of my daughter, which she loved.

We ordered from the 3 course set menu which at £10.99 was amazingly good family.

My family and i had a great time, the food was excellent and the staff couldnt do enough.

Great place and will definitely be going back.

We've been coming to Clowns for over 25 years, and it's never let us down.

It was brilliant with our kids, and now our children take their children!

I've lost count of the amount of birthdays, anniversaries etc we've celebrated there, and they've always managed to make the occasion and us feel special. Both the food and the service has always been brilliant. Unfortunately we're now moving away from Essex, and I think Clowns is the thing that we shall miss most. So we just thought we'd write a big 'Thankyou'to all of the staff for making so many meals over the years so enjoyable. We'll try and visit occasionally!

we like to eat out most night like trying somewhere different this place was a mistake starters were ok main courses tasted of nothing sure there were just microwaved rubbish mushroom strogonoff tasted watery soup sweet and sour chicken cant be described desserts nicker boker glorys since when have there been made with chocolate icecream when we complained told thats what there r made of think the chef need a new recipe book rate this place out of 10 1 out of 10 for the starter just a waste of 38pounds never again

This place used to be really good but after our visit tonight I can honestly say that it is losing its shine!

My 6 year old didn't get given the usual kids box on arrival so we asked for the kids pack when we ordered the meal & he was just given a small booklet, some crayons to use in it & a mini puzzle - whereas the children who arrived on the table next to us got given the kids box without even having to ask for it!

We ordered off the set Mon-Fri menu which has a fixed price for 1, 2 or 3 courses & starters arrived quickly! As did the main meals but the chips looked rather insipid & could have done with a bit more cooking! Whereas the kids sausages were overdone & hard! Waited 15 mins for the plates to be cleared, then another 20 mins for a portion of chocolate fudge cake & 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream! The waitress definitely had an attitude problem & at no point were we approached to ask if everything was to our liking! The restaurant was only one third full but there were only 2 members of waiting staff & they spent more time at the bar area chatting to each other than serving or clearing tables!

I have eaten at Clowns many times in the past but I certainly won't be rushing back there after the poor service we received this time!

I go to clowns about two times a month. It is a great restaurant with friendly staff and good quality food. The service is always good and the wait for the food is never more than 20 mins. The huge portions is the main reason I go as the value for money is excellent. If you dont like the huge portions no one forces you to eat it all!! As far as i'm concerned Clowns may not be the best quality food in town but they are the only restaurant that really give you your moneys worth in the town centre. Also the coke floats are awesome! I would recommend Clowns to anyone!!

I came here for the first time with a few friends, immedietly the nice staff welcomed us in. They were more than helpful throughout.

We all ordered and the food was horrible and greasy and too much of it. what a waste.

Other than the staff everything was horrible, even then decor. looks like it hasn't been touched since the 1970's.

I do not reccommend anyone going!

STAY AWAY.

It's great value for money but you get far too much served up on your plate and it makes you feel full just by looking at it. Have been a couple of times before but today it looked in need of a good clean and refurb. Won't go back in a hurry.

Our first visit here, we will deifantely be coming back. The service was outstanding, the food fantastic quality and value and lots of it. The only down side I can say, the decor is a bit dated and if your sitting facing the window, the sun reflects of the building the other side of the high st, but thats just being petty, a great little restaurant.
