I Bought The Toshiba Sd-43hk Dvd Home Cinema Syste
I bought the Toshiba SD-43HK DVD Home Cinema System from Currys for £160. I got home and read through the instructions, and it sounded quite easy, and I had the DVD player up and running in about 25 minutes. I set all the db modes, and the effects I wanted on it, as there is cinema music, matrix, panorama, and lots more. You also have Dolby digital 2, which is a huge bonus, and an FM and AM tuner. I put in a DVD i.e. Terminator 3, and skipped it to the crane chase scene. I was amazed! The sound is so rich, and really good quality! My mates are always wanting to buy it off of me! The sub-woofer has rich bass. The DVD unit is stylish. The picture quality is so much better than my old DVD player. It is best to have it in a big room, and it is great for playing music on!

I Was Happy With My Toshiba Sd-43hk System For The
I was happy with my Toshiba SD-43HK system for the first 3 months. Sound quality rich, only comment I would make is the dynamics were a bit over the top - i.e. you have to turn up to hear conversations and turn down during action sequences (however you set the speakers up).
Picture Quality OK (difficult to judge as my TV is not great).
Major Problem! There seems to be a fundamental design problem with this particular model. First unit lasted 3 months, then one day displayed 'hello...protection...goodbye' and promptly turned off. It did this every time you try to turn it on.
Received a replacement without too much hassle, but guess what? Exact same problem after 30mins usage. After searching on the web it seems this is a very common problem with this model.
Have since had a refund and advised Toshiba to wake up and sort this as it is ruining their reputation.
I found this review helpful because... my unit has just done the same thing.

I'd Recently Bought A Cheap And Nasty (and Faulty)
I'd recently bought a cheap and nasty (and faulty) dvd & home cinema system (Yamada) which had to be returned, but it at least clarified what I wanted from a system. This little beauty from Toshiba was my choice for replacement/upgrade and with a few gripes aside it's pretty much what I wanted.
Firstly It's a piece of cake to set up and it looks well made. There's also miles of rear speaker cable. As I'm new to DVD I've been amazed by the variation in DVD sound and the types of output they will allow. This usually means a search through the DVD's menu to see what it will output, and then a few minutes playing about with the system til I'm happy with it. The usual balance/delays and speaker level adjustments are explained in the manual but there are on screen settings that are not so I only found that by trial and error. The other important thing to say is that I had the rear speakers at full volume to bring them into the mix as they seemed quiet on films. Two new £15 thor scart leads now mean I've turned them down again. Huge difference. The DVD player is multi-region and also has a sound compression setting to reduce the difference between the loudest and quietest sounds, making for easier listening and less neighbour aggravation. I've got the sub set as low as it will go, ok I have a fairly small lounge but I think the other speakers are good enough to disconnect the sub altogether, although I would prefer it had an off switch or option. For listening to CD's it is clouded by too much base, it's great for dance music but not much else. I really wish it had an equaliser function to balance the sound. As an indicator of what it can do I bought the simple minds seen the light DVD, it has a live concert in verona that it will let me use dolby surround sound, it really sounds live and is amazing and balanced. It also has another concert from Newcastle and the promo's from loads of singles that will only play in stereo, not using the rear speakers in other words. This is too basey to be enjoyable and really spoils it. Music it ain't. But Glastonbury live sounded wicked woohoo. This DVD player also has a radio receiver but I haven't used it yet.
So to sum up, I really like it, I wish the film makers would settle for one sound output, surround preferably as the rears only seem to be used for impact sound in some movies. So you're only going to get out of this what the DVD provides. There are pro logic 2 settings and dts when allowed but I tend to stick 5.1 sound. Again base issues and the need for a music equaliser are it's downfall if I can say that but they're imperfections rather than glowing faults. For £170 I love it. Oh and £30 for the scarts. Oh and you'd best buy Saving Private Ryan and all the Rings films. :0)
