The Worst Planned Trip I've Ever Been On
If I could leave a -5* review, I would. We booked a 13 Euro Rail Trip to Budapest, Vienna, Prague and Berlin in December through Ramsay Travel. Only 1 x 20kg checked suitcase (for a couple) and 2 x cabin bags were included in the cost (£1,518). However, upon arriving at the boarding gate, we were faced with an additional charge of £46 for the cabin bag as we were only booked to have a small personal bag each. We then had to add 1 x cabin bag to our return flight as we faced the same problem, resulting in another additional charge of £27.99. We raised this issue with Ramsay Travel immediately and were made to feel as though this was our error for misunderstanding their advertisement when it clearly said cabin bags were included. Not once did they ask for photo evidence of what we had with us to ensure it was in line with Ryanairs cabin bag policy. After sending proof of what Ryanair class as cabin bags, our complaint was escalated to head office, who immediately responded saying that no refund would be given. The receipts for these charges were sent to a private Ramsay Travel email, and we have now requested twice for the receipts to be sent to us. Both times have been answered saying they had been sent, but nothing has been received.
Upon arriving at our hotel in Budapest, the hotel was old, run down and not well maintained. We were booked into a twin room (for a couple) and one of the beds were broken. We spoke to the receptionist, who just asked if it could be slept on and would try get someone to fix it... after 2 nights, I suffered back pain and 2 uncomfortable sleeps.
We then had rail travel booked from Budapest to Vienna, upon boarding the train, we came to realise that no seat reservations had been made. The train was extremely busy and we were forced to stand for the journey, which is not a short rail journey at 3 hours 30 minutes, may I add. As a fellow Travel Co-ordinator, I would never dream of booking rail travel for clients and I am absolutely appalled that this happened, especially given that reservations would not have cost much.
We then arrived in Vienna, and again the hotel was extremely aged and not well maintained. The pillows in the room were very soft, and after asking the receptionist if it would be possible to have additional pillows, were told “no, wait until morning, I don’t know where they are”. Another night with a poor sleep. After 1 night, we noticed that there was a fly infestation in the bathroom, which resulted in us having to be changed rooms.
Our train from Vienna to Prague also did not have seat reservations, and we had to pay an additional £6 to make these reservations as we did not like the idea of standing on a busy train for nearly 5 hours.
Same again for our train from Prague to Berlin, which was another additional cost of £5. At such a low cost to add seat reservations, it begs the question why could Ramsay Travel not have booked these in the first place? In the response from head office regarding this aspect of our complaint, it is stated that “seat reservations were not part of the package price”, at no point were we made aware of this and I would expect a seat reservation to be made for such a long journey.
This is without a doubt, the worst holiday I have ever been on and feel extremely let down by the Ramsay Travel staff, and disgusted at the lack of professionalism and standards that they set. We had also booked a trip to Thailand back in January through Ramsay Travel and airport transfers were booked for the wrong arrival and departure flights... sums up the staff to be honest. No attention to detail what-so-ever.
Never again will I book a trip through Ramsay World Travel, I wouldn't trust them to book a train from Edinburgh to Glasgow. I strongly recommend NOT using their service.
Hi; Like you say, we all have different expectations. I do find it odd that if you have worked in the travel industry for 5 years that you didn’t realise how Ryan Air and Easyjet operate and that you needed to actually book seats on any train service to be sure of one. Like in UK a train ticket doesn’t entitle one to a seat, its just a contract to get you from A to B. As it happens part of our journey from Budapest to Vienna was by coach due to engineering works. Anyway glad you had a good time otherwise.
We all have different experiences, I’m delighted that you had a better one than I.
We did “bother to read the conditions of travel” and full expected 2 x cabin bags as stated but got charged because they meant “personal bags”.
Great to hear your agent advised that you should book seats on the train - something that wouldn’t have bothered us IF mentioned - which it wasn’t.
Having worked in travel & tourism for the last 5 years, maybe I do expect a high standard of quality - and quite rightly so. You don’t pay for a service and expect or accept it to be less than enjoyable. Not saying I expected this trip to be 5* all singing, all dancing but surely it’s not too much to not expect a broken bed and bug infested rooms?
Outwith anything Ramsay Travel booked, the holiday was great. Just their service & the quality of their sold package was poor.
We went on exactly the same holiday, in October 2023. Yes we could’ve done with having more luggage, but we coped. We bothered to read the conditions of travel, and knew what we were allowed to take with us, so we had no problem with Ryan Air or Easyjet. We found the hotel in Budapest a bit old fashioned, but otherwise fine. We were told to book seats for all train trips, so we did, and had no issues. The hotel in Vienna was modern and comfortable, as were those in Prague and Berlin and and had no issues at all. Sometimes I think people expect everything to be 5 star and laid out on a silver salver for them, for everthing to be perfect. Life isn’t like that. You get what you pay for. We had a great time.
Poor Choice Of Hotel
Initial introduction, left waiting by staff, I could see they were busy, but once free staff ignored, waited 10-15mins.
Once seen, I felt more of a hinderance rather than customer as I needed support in choosing holiday.
Holiday was promptly booked all appeared fine.
Hotel was suppose to be 4 star boutique, nothing fancy about this place, unclean, unhelpful staff and very poor.
staff at Ramsey informed I would have leg room seats on return journey, which we didn't have.
Poor service, poor choice offered, I'd rather book myself.

My Maderia Booking
I had booked an all inclusive holiday to Maderia, Portugal December 2022. Was due to fly out 4th September, 2023. Couple of days ago I received an email which had been forwarded on from booking agent, The email from Jet2 read :
"We have been advised that a block of apartments are being built next to Alto Lido Hotel. We have been closely monitoring the work, and we have been advised that they are expected to continue for longer than previously expected. We wanted to let you know that the work will be visible from the hotel, and noise disturbance can be expected at times. Work may take place intermittently, however, the hours of work are anticipated to be between 08:00 and 18.30, daily.
We are sorry for any disruption caused and the progress of the work is being monitored. However, should you feel that you no longer wish to travel to this property, you may amend your holiday and, in this instance, you will not incur any administration fees.
If you do, however, choose to move to another hotel, there may be a slight difference in cost. If the cost is lower, you will receive a refund and if the cost is higher, you will be asked to pay the difference in cost".
I did my own research on flats and found this site has been ongoing for 3 years, so Jet2 knew about this back then and did not advise anyone of this but still accepted bookings and as I mentioned was only advised of this recently. I contacted Ramsay Travel who have given me exceptional service throughout this. They spoke to Jet2 on my behalf as there were no other holidays in Maderia on the dates I needed. also regardless where I went I would have to pay increased prices. I asked how much to cancel booking, Jet2 advised 50% of booking due to terms and conditions.
I am disgusted with the attitude Jet2 has dealt with my booking. I am being penalised for something that I have no control over, no other communication at all was sent until 6 weeks before I am due to fly, seems like Jet2 were hoping I would accept hotel as is and try to make things difficult if I tried to move booking or cancel, what if I did have limited funds and could not afford to rebook an increased holiday or loose 50% of my money. Jet2 were not interested now they had my money up front. All I will say I will never promote this company again as at present I have no holiday booked, well done again Jet2 as you have pushed myself and others into an very uncomfortable situation as you still my money but was stated due to you're T & Cs will only 50% of my money back.
UPDATE : jet2 call me yesterday 09/08/23 advising my travel agent, travel agent should have advised me of building site at time of booking and because I did not book holiday direct via Jet2 website, apparently they have a tick box for building sites ????, so in effect nothing has been signed and am being penalised for going through travel agent. Buy the way remember They were going to keep 50% cancellation fee its now they keep the whole £1100, happy days, greedy gits and won't be back.
Don’t Touch This Crowd With A Barge Pole - Absolute Amateurs
Used this company once before and service was ok nothing out of the ordinary however used them in November last year for 4 of us to travel to St Lucia - BIG MISTAKE!! First of all they booked us into a hotel that wasn’t even open we found out through a friend and had to call them about it! Then we were on the holiday and found out BA were cancelling flights to Scotland we were advised arrange alternative means of getting home and were assured we would be reimbursed the costs! Sent in receipts upon return and still waiting to be reimbursed this is now over 2 months ! They subcontract to an even worse outfit called Gold medal then do the sloppy shoulder excuse that’s it’s up to them to reimburse us - untrue citizens advice have advised the contract was with them not Gold Medal. I have in the past used many other smaller travel agents With no issue but these just makes me want to stick with the major players as the overall performance doesn’t even rate one star !!!
Terrible Way To Treat Us!!
Like others on here I unfortunately booked through this mobster outfit
Like others on here I was welcomed with open arms till the virus issue meant our holiday was cancelled. As per the rules they had 14 days to return our hard earned cash. I received most of it a few weeks ago after many of my instigated emails and calls.
They kept back a measly £200 and I’m now determined to get this via the options available to me.
I’ll never use them again and to withhold this amount from customers is despicable and They should be ashamed of themselves for the way they have handled this.
No doubt they will dispute this as others have seen but I have all the emails and evidence needed.
If they do dispute I will open a case up for small claims court as it’s easily available and straightforward and then I shall add loss of interest and other costs associated with the stress of all this.
They are showing their true colours and shouldn’t get away with this behaviour.
Wouldn’t be so bad if they showed some empathy and regret but they don’t care one hoot.
If I didn’t call or email them they would not be calling you anytime soon that’s for sure.
What a joke of a company
Not Even Worth 1 Star
Booked a holiday with this lot, due to fly to Canada for a special 65 birthday on 14th March, got to airport and all the people who were going on the flight were mostly Canadians who were told to get home asap by their goverment due to coronavirus, they asked us if we stayed in Canada when we said no we are going on holiday, their response was are you guys nuts? the whole place is just about closed, upon arrival in Canada we switched on the tv and Canadian goverment were urging foreign nationals to get home, we called ramsey , who were just not interested , even head office in dundee refused to deal with it as it had been booked through stirling branch. Total ignorance from a company that calls themselves "World travel experts" Please anyone considering booking with them , have second thoughts and go to a more reputable travel agent. PS this has been written on 27/6/20 and we still have not been informed at all by Ramsey
Disgusting Customer Service - Dunfermline
DO NOT USE THIS TRAVEL AGENT!!! Booked an American trip with them and cruise about 10 months ago. Gave them a substantial amount of money then 4 weeks before departure the change flights even though the original one was still available, reducing the holiday time and no doubt increasing their profit. After collecting tickets we then discovered hidden costs, things they didn't advise us they would not reserve and we've had to pay extra for. No explanations, poor customer service, couldn't care attitude after money was paid!
Deplorable Customer Service Beware!!!
PLEASE DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE TO BOOK YOUR HOLIDAY.......!!! After booking with them last week for a family holiday and parting with a substantial amount of cash, when the booking details came through they were not what was requested..... although there a 3 people travelling I only have a double room...and not the family with the balcony I requested....only 2 people booked on the flight...and although I requested them together they are not... i am now having to deal with head office as the agent refuses to take my calls or get back to me... this can take up to 28 days for a result. ... this is for sure going to cost me more money!!!...and because they do not record their calls...it's his word against mine .....I am disgusted with the service so far and quite frankly should have used my gut instinct and not booked after last year's error resulting in a 7 hour delay as transfers were booked for the wrong day!!! ....PLEASE BOOK IN PERSON....CHECK ALL YOUR DETAILS THOROUGHLY BEFORE YOU PART WITH YOUR CASH....OR IT WILL COST YOU !!!
Disgusted Customer
Ramsay Travel...pure joke. Incompetance, abuse and no accountability and that's from the manager. He actually said...it's in print so it must be true. Yeh because there's a box that says 'this was booked by mistake by an employee'. They booked a private transfer taxi we didn't request and then said we did (so without saying it he implied I'm a liar). Then he said it would cost £50 to cancel - do you expeect us to pay it. Well yes, it's called customer relations, accountability, goodwill, customer retention. I will never use them again and strongly advise everyone to think twice before using them. When I told him that, the response was 'oh come on, over a £30 taxi'. Completely missing the point. Not a clue. Customer relation skills of Ghengis Khan.
No diabled room booked either. He denied we requested that too. Not received any info about tablets on flights to Turkey.. good job I've paid attention.
Holiday spoiled and we don't leave for a month yet.
NEVER AGAIN!!!
