Extremely Disappointing.

I was extremely disappointed in this hotel: we booked it in the knowledge that 4 star meant a certain level of comfort and cleanliness, as well as the fact that it contained a gym (crucial for my holiday partner as she was running a 10 mile race two days after we returned), a sauna, an indoor swimming pool, and a jacuzzi as amenities for guests. Regarding these:

- Gym: according to the extremely rude and unhelpful reception staff (besides one guy called Victor), the gym was "in the process of being moved downstairs" (I'd wager that they've been telling guests this for a while now) so the gym consisted of 4 pieces of equipment in a room, 2 of which didn't work (cross trainer and weight machine), and a cycling machine that shook and tottered from side to side in an alarmingly unstable way whenever you used it. When we complained to our holiday rep about this and they asked reception about it, reception staff said that they had made arrangements for us to use the facilities of a nearby hotel as compensation, and that they would tell us how to the following morning. Which would have been fine, except when we asked them the next morning about how we went about this, we were told it wasn't possible at all: so clearly just a fig branch to appease the rep until she was out of the building. Considering that we had picked this hotel specifically because it was a of a certain standard and had gym facilities, this is obviously unacceptable and caused completely unnecessary stress and irritation.

- Sauna, jacuzzi: the sauna was variously "not working"/"someone has forgotten to turn it on"/"has a leak" depending on the day, and every time we asked about it we were told to ask again the next day when it would be fixed (surprise surprise, it never was). Regarding the jacuzzi, we were just told that it wasn't working and that was that. There also appeared to be a jacuzzi on the roof, but that had wood and coverings over it and was not uncovered at all during the time we were there;

- Indoor "swimming pool": one of the reviews on this site called it a glorified swimming pool, and this is completely accurate: it was absolutely tiny. To even find it we had to ask the reception staff, who before we'd even seen it told us that "it's not very nice, you don't want to use it". So that was encouraging.

Among other complaints:

- Extremely rude, unhelpful reception staff who were a) rude to the point of offensive, and b) overly defensive when asked the simplest of questions (an inquiry as to whether we needed to pay reception for use of the computers was met with "it's not our fault if they break!" Um, ok.)

- The "bar" by the swimming pool only seemed to be open when the staff happened to be around, which was not very often;

- Much of the hotel and the corridors in particular outside our room smelt of mould and damp, as other reviewers have pointed out;

- The lifts did indeed drop alarmingly when you got into them, which I'd imagine makes a lot of people nervous and is hardly encouraging;

- The fans in the room were loud enough to prevent you going to sleep, and got louder throughout the night/the longer they were on (every night I had to get up and turn it off at around 4/5am as it wakes you up);

- The majority of the sun loungers by the rooftop swimming pool were either broken or mouldy, and whilst we didn't use any of the parasols ourselves we did witness them going flying a number of times;

While you expect/resign yourself to the fact that "4 star" in Malta and the like may not be what you'd expect 4* to be in other countries, you do expect as a minimum that a hotel that advertises that it has certain facilities actually, you know, has them on offer for their guests to use, and that staff are (again at a minimum) apologetic or actively helpful in compensating you in any way if these facilities are not in use for whatever reason. The unavailability of the gym and the sheer unhelpful, "that's how it is, deal with it" attitude of the staff caused needless stress and irritation that could have easily been avoided, and is the kind of thing that can seriously damage the relaxation you are meant to feel when on holiday. This hotel certainly does not deserve to be called a 4* hotel, I would say 2* at best, and should certainly be reviewed again by inspector's to rectify this.

As for fellow holidaymakers, I would strongly advise against booking here: not only does it fail on offering what it advertises, it also falls down on offering a cheaper, "no thrills" service where you can expect a minimum amount of fuss and/or problems. Please don't waste your time going here, I implore you: the fact that I've spent half an hour typing this out when my Outlook inbox is still bursting to the seams after a week away from the office should say something as well.

A Truly Dreadful Hotel

We have just returned from 14 days of absolute misery at the Crown Hotel in Bugibba.

There is so much wrong with the place I scarcely know where to begin, but if I tell you that it is known throughout the resort as Fawlty Towers you’ll get the general idea.

The temperature was in the high 90's for the duration of our stay and there was NO air conditioning in the entire hotel for the 14 days.

The AIR-CONDITIONING DOESN’T WORK. Although someone let slip that the system functions well enough but the hotel just doesn’t the required gas coolant. Consequently all the air-conditioning unit does is fan hot air around the building.

The TEMPERATURE IN OUR ROOM at night measured 30 DEGREES C. Not an exaggeration we checked it with a digital thermometer.

Here in the UK if you kept a pet dog in temperatures like that, you’d be prosecuted.

In an effort to make the room bearable enough to sleep we used to sprinkle the sheets with water and lie on wet bed.

As for the RESTAURANT it was simply too hot to eat in there. Even guests who’d paid for half board were going elsewhere for their evening meals.

Everyone complained in droves. The manager was besieged and the receptionist couldn’t hand out complaint forms fast enough. We were told the air conditioning would be repaired the following week, however someone said they’d been told exactly the same thing the week before so it’s obviously just something the hotel says to fob off guests. They can say it’s going to be repaired next week, cause they know that by the time next week arrives, these particular guests will be safely checked out and gone.

As for the ROOFTOP POOL, here in the UK it would be closed down for BREACHING HYGIENE REGULATIONS!

The hotel CUTS OFF THE WATER to the pool area during the day and that includes the LAVATORIES!

All day long people are going in and out of the toilets with no means of washing their hands!

It’s disgusting everything up there (handrails, door knobs, sun beds etc.) must be crawling with bugs! There is a notice asking guests to shower-off any sun creams/oils before swimming in the pool, but of course the shower doesn’t work without water. Consequently the POOL WATER is murky and cloudy with a greasy film floating on top.

The POOL BAR is closed. There are ONLY 3 PARASOLS for the entire hotel, TWO OF WHICH ARE BROKEN, and NO OTHER SHADE whatsoever by the pool. SUNBEDS and CHAIRS are falling apart and filthy in keeping with the rest of the pool area.

The LIFTS are absolutely TERRIFYING!

As you step into them they actually DROP!

Then when once going they judder and shudder all the time. Reaching your destination the lift goes boing-boing-boing 6 of 7 times before the door opens to let you out. And one of the lifts is always OUT OF ORDER for at least a week.

Our ROOM had a lamp hanging off the wall. The patio furniture was covered in rust stains which marked our clothing. The hairdryer in the bathroom was filthy. The grouting in our shower was filthy. The tiles on the bathroom floor were broken with filthy grouting.

Please do yourself a favour and don’t stay here.

Just Come Back From The Crown Hotel Where We Was S

Just come back from the Crown Hotel where we was supposed to spend a week as a short break. We cut our holiday short and flew back home after 4 days. Just could not stand it any longer. Firstly, we had a room that smelled of wee! There were no windows in the room and the balcony was not a balcony, just a small fenced in patio area that was facing a very tall wall. You could not see outside at all so we did not even know what the weather was like. We asked to be moved but was told that renovation was going on and it was not possible. Renovation was certainly going on. We heard it! All the time. The food was not too bad but you could not get a decent drink at the swimming pool bar. Swimming pool on roof with broken beds ! All in all it was torture as the weather was not great and as we had been to Malta before and done all ther touristy things we were forced to stay in the room or sit at a restaurant. I would not recommend a stay at this place and it certainly is not a 4*. Try and get your booking changed if you have booked this as you will be extremely disappointed !

Whatever rennovation was going on during your awful holiday in 2010, there was little evidence of it when we spent a horrible fortnight there in 2012. This is a hotel to be avoided at all costs. Considering the number of awful reviews it gets and the poor impression it gives of Malta, I cannot understand why the Maltese Tourist Office hasn't downgraded it from it's current 4 Star status.

First Time In Malta (feb-mar 2010) And We Hoped Fo

First time in Malta (Feb-Mar 2010) and we hoped for a good 4 star hotel - but the Crown is not anywhere near that - a reasonable 2 star is best..staff very friendly and food just about OK - but showers are a joke, a 10 year old may get in one but not an adult person - we complained as did a large majority of newcomers on arrival, and all were moved - we got a bath with antiquated mixer shower...the bar doesnt open until 19.00hrs and closes at 2300 hrs - unbelievable......entertainment provided is rubbish, 2 nights of bingo and one night of an ageing male singer with prerecorded tapes...bedrooms smelled of old smoke, carpets were musty and the splash pool looked disgusting..my bed collapsed one night due to not enough slats under the mattress - it was fixed but these things shouldnt be in a real 4 star....location poor, and loud noise from pub next door / under some of the bedrooms....suggest avoid the hotel if you can.

Both My Wife And I Were Of The Opinion That The Cr

Both my wife and I were of the opinion that the Crown Hotel at Bugibba was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in.

One night was enough and we demanded a move to the Suncrest in Quara if we had not moved we would have returned to England immediately. The room was poor, cleanliness was dire, carpets that had not been cleaned in years, a shower that did not work the story could go on it was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in.

The Crown Hotel was not even worth a 1 Star, terrible with a room that looked onto a brick wall, swimming pool that I would not have my Labrador swim in. Never did get any towel and the service was the pits! Never again I would not recommend the Crown to anyone at all!

Wish we'd had the sense to demand a move - would have saved ourselves two weeks of utter misery.

Nice Comfortable Bedroom With Clean Towels Daily A

Nice comfortable bedroom with clean towels daily and bedding regularly changed, a bit dark due to balcony looking out onto neighbouring building, front rooms would be better. Bathrooms in need of an update. Staff friendly and food good. Communal areas spotless. Would recommend to people wanting small, clean, friendly hotel with no frills. Don't go if you are a picky person.

After Reading The Previous Reviews, We Were Very A

After reading the previous reviews, we were very anxious about our stay at this hotel, but pleasantly surprised. Agree that The Crown Hotel is possibly not a 4*, but the breakfast was good, clean towels everyday,room cleaned and tidied everyday even on Sundays. Yes our shower was rather small, but we had a laugh everytime we had a shower because if you dropped the soap,try to retrieve it you turned the shower off,but plenty of hot water. Staff were very helpful.Lovely swimmingpool on the roof, although the sunbeds were hit and miss. The only thing we would say that it was very quiet in the evenings, could have done with some entertainment. We had an enjoyable holiday, although we did get lost on our way back to the hotel a couple of times.
