I Bought This Lens In Spite Of Having A Great 80-2

I bought this lens in spite of having a great 80-200 2.8 D Nikon lens. I bought it for the speed and sharpness. It is not an overly heavy lens and balances well on my F5. I would recommend this lens to anyone.

Completely agree. This lens really is sharp - as sharp as anything else I have ever used. I bought this lens INSTEAD of an 80-200, and have not regretted it. An 80-200 would be a bit more convenient, but the 180 f/2.8 has a lot of advantages. To start with there is virtually no distortion of any kind. The 80-200 f/2.8 bends straight lines near the edges of the frame. Not much, but enough to notice if you are photographing features of buildings. Then ther is its weight advantage. The 180 f/2.8 is less than half the weight of the 80-200 f/2.8. In fact my usual full set of lenses (20 f/3.5, 35 f/2.8PC, 50 f/1.8, 105 f/2.8 macro and 180 f/2.8)weighs little more than the 80-200 f/2.8 alone. The 180 works better than a zoom with teleconverters giving me approximately a 250 f/4 (with 1.4x) and 360 f/5.6 (with 2x). Lack of zoom even has advantages when shooting. It is one less thing to think about. It used to be easy to miss a shot while fiddling about trying to frame a it. Now I just press the shutter.
