The Philips Dvd-r980 Dvd Recorder Has A Manufactur
The Philips DVD-R980 DVD recorder has a manufacturing fault that is known to the makers. A bulletin was sent to all dealers about this. My machine was modified at Philips' expense, and it has been perfect ever since.

After 6 months intermittent problems occur recording and playing discs. This gradually gets worse until now 2 years since purchase the model no longer plays or records any dvds. The machine only states the messages DISC ERROR/NO DISC or EMPTY DISC and is basically JUNK. It is not fit for the purpose it was designed and Philips Customer care are no help whatsoever. I understand from many reviews across the net that this is a common manufacturing problem but Philips will not own up to it. BUYER BEWARE OF PHILIPS.
Completely sympathise with the two previous posts. I have always gravitated to philips products but this white elephant has forever destroyed the company's reputation in my mind. After only a few months of recording (nothing too complex; in fact merely direct recording transfers from a SKY+ box) this started turning out corrupted disc after corrupted disc. It currently functions as an adequate dvd player but that, lamentably, was not the reason I bought it. Philips Customer care were close to usless too, as were software patches from the site.
I was talking with my son about the disappointing results with my R980 when he suggested that I should consult the "Review Centre" before investing in a replacement. The comments made by "Unhappyphililsuser" dated 20th October are a perfect replica of my own experiences including time zones. It has virtually depressed my enthusiasm for recorders.
Having read this report and considering the cost of the machine I shall definitely not be buying Philips, and ironically it was the one make I had on my short list. Sorry Philips, you should take note and help out this unfortunate customer.
