Mendal Johnson, Let's Go Play At The Adams' - Syno
Mendal Johnson, Let's Go Play At The Adams' - Synopsis:
"Barbara, a twenty-year-old babysitter has the job of watching the Adams' kids while the parents go away for a week. An easy enough prospect, she needs the money during summer break at university and they need a babysitter. It's a simple job too. Look after two kids for 7 days, feed them, take them swimming, keep them entertained, take them to church, get them to bed. Simple!... Then, one day Barbara wakes up bound and gagged to her bed. The kids are going to have some fun. After all, it's just a game. What harm can kids do? But this is more than a game and when more kids come over to play at the Adams' the game gets very very serious indeed".
A novel that claims on its cover to be "more terrifying than Lord Of The Flies & The Exorcist combined". I picked this novel up having never heard of Mendal Johnson before, but I thought that I would give it a go. And how glad I was to do that. This horror tale will engulf you from start to finish with an incredible degree of suspension that will end up harrowing you as it brings you to its deeply disturbing climax.
Releashed back in 1974 by Granda Publishing, it has since scarcely been heard of. Possibly one of the most pychologicaly disturbing novels you will ever read, its gritty nature forces you to read on and on, as you sit there squirming in your chair. It is written in a matter-of-fact style that leaves you shocked and breathless once finished. Truly awesome and a shame it's not more widely known of.
I read this harrowing story many years ago, probably the late 70s. I am so disappointed to learn it is no longer in print.
It is so well written, the horrific experiences of the character at the hands of such young people makes this story one that stays with you for a long time. Unfortunately, in my kindness to a friend, I finished it and offered it up for her to read
with my recommendation and sadly it was never returned. My loss!
