Short Changed For Large Groups
Captive audience with canoist so they don't have to try too hard. Great at accommodating a large group (for a charity event) and fitting to our timings, but under served so not enough to go around. Some were left hungry. Food ok but basic.

The Best Pub Near Hay-on-wye
The Cornish cod is to die for. The views are great. The staff and the atmosphere are wonderful. We go there regularly. I always take my visitors there - they all love it. Very extensive menu. Great beers - my favourite is Doom Bar - having said that my best mate lived in Dorset/Devon so home from home!

Worst Pub Ever Visited - 15.9.2011
This is the first pub in Wales I have been too and feel a clear hate for english people. This pub was not interested what so ever in visitors, just locals despite it being a pub on the river. A group of us canoed and camped on a nearby site.
We asked for meals and they clearly wasnt to keen on catering for us despite us calling before hand. The food come out and many of us ordered burgers. As a result we got burgers which were rock hard, on a bun of plain bread no butter, undercooked chips and no salad.
On many occasions we stood at the bar for upto 20 minutes waiting to be served for a local to come in and get served straight away. Sadly we had no choice but to stop there because there are no pubs nearby. At one point when standing near the bar a remark was made by the bar man about welsh culture intended at us. Sadly considering our group consisted of former army, navy and olympic judo professionals we didnt expect to be treated so terribly. Never ever use this pub, it is outdated like the people that work there.
Its quite clear that the pub is being kept alive by its positioning i.e. the river not the food, people or service. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
This is the best Pub in the area - what did you do to annoy the Landlord? You must have been pretty unpleasant! More fool you!
Too right Boyo!!
Not only is it in England but it sells Doom Bar, a fantastic ale from the south west, and Cornish cod for its fish 'n Chips, which are the best in the Hay-on-Wye area.
The Boat Whitney on Wye is in England you donkey!!

Nasty Cleaner!
This weekend we canoed from Hay and we booked a table at the boat for lunch for 12 of us...On arrival we had a small carrier bag of rubbish from the morning on the river. As their was a bin outside the boat we naturally deposited it in the bin outside. The bar staff were very friendly and showed us to our table and we ordered our food and a few of us went outside to have a cigarrette. What happened next can only be described as a scene out of night of the living dead... This mad woman ( who had obviously broken off her leash) came running out of the adjoining house and flew to the bin screeching " who has put this rubbish in the bin Who has done this?" Myself and my friends sat in shock at the picnic table not daring to catch her eye in case we were turned to stone.. The next thing the mad woman dives into the bin retrieves the small bag of rubbish and launches herself at me, shoving the carrier bag of rubbish in my face asking "is it you is it you". By now there were quiet a few people outside the pub and we explained that we had put the rubbish in the bin so as not to take it into the pub littering the inside and how we did not think it was unreasonable to put the rubbish in the bin. Mad woman yelled "i'm sick of you lot coming here eating your own food and putting rubbish in the bin" we explained we were not eating our own food and booked a table but she made us take the carrier bag of rubbish back into the pub. When we stumbled back to the table embarrassed we complained as the mad woman was that rude we considered cancelling our meal. We all agreed she must be the landlady and if that is how she is running a business we would leave. We spoke to the waitress who apologised extensively stating that the mad woman is not the landlady but the CLEANER!!!! Myself and my party found this extremely hysterical given the fact it is her job to er.. um clean.. and our only crime was putting rubbish in yes you've guessed it the bin!!!!
we had a fantastic meal and the food was second to none but my advice to the owners of the boat is ...GET A NEW CLEANER!.....

Great Friendly Pub With Good Atmosphere And Good Food
I visited the Boat Inn with 5 other friends in April 2011 after doing an all day walk in the Black Mountains. We were staying overnight at a hotel @ 2 miles up the road from the Boat but when we checked in we found that the kitchen was closed and no food was available. We decided to cram into one vehicle and drive to the Boat for dinner and a few drinks and our plan was to leave the car at the pub and walk back to our hotel at the end of the night. We all enjoyed excellent food at a reasonable price along with good beer and a lively and friendly atmosphere. At the end of the night when we were about to leave, the landlady and the bar maid were concerned that we were planning to walk along an unlit busy road. They insisted on driving us the 2 miles back to our hotel. Absolutely unbelievable service from incredibly friendly staff. I would recommend this pub to anyone...... without it we would have had a miserable, dry and hungry night!!

Although From The Outside The Boat Looks In Need O
Although from the outside the Boat looks in need of some TLC inside was nicely furnished maybe a bit dated. Stunning views of the Wye through the double glazed picture windows. Staff were friendly and helpful despite a very large menu food was fresh and well cooked the portions very generous. Service was attentive but not intrusive. We could relax and take our time would like to come back and try more of the menu.

Having Visited The Boat Inn Some 15+yrs Ago And S
Having visited the Boat Inn some 15+yrs ago and served salamon from a tin!!by an elderly couple who sadly did not appear to want us there!!.I visited again tonight with my wife. The outside of the building looked somewhat ragged with scaffolding etc but we decided to take a chance. On entering we were greeted by a very pleasant young lady at the bar. The owner Mr Robert Taylor then came and apologised re the external appearance stating that work was being carried out on the roof and front of the building. The views hadn't changed but what a difference with the rest. The waiter was friendly and caring The food value for money and most enjoyable. Having visited the Coach & Horses at Llangynidr approx a fortnight ago the difference was immense. At least in the Boat Inn you had plenty of your selection at a reasonable price rather than very small portions at a high price at the Coach & Horses!! Well worth the journey and would recommend the Boat Inn to anyone who enjoys their food..
